Subject: Complement to the LAWRA Workshop announcement

I said in the last NA Digest Saturday, November 13, 1999 Volume 99 :
Issue 45: "The recursive factorization and solution algorithms of
symmetric matrices stored in packed data format perform from 5 to 7 times
better than the traditional packed data format algorithms". I was not very
precise in my formulation.
I would like to complement my above expression: The recursive
factorization and solution algorithms of symmetric matrices stored in
packed data format perform from 5 to 7 times better than the traditional
packed data format algorithms. We obtain the performance comparison result
numbers on several computers, IBM, Compaq-Digital, SGI and modern PC with
Linux. The times of the recursive subroutine were compared with the LAPACK
and manufacture packed version subroutines. We have not compared yet with
other libraries and packages. We are being started with the Harwell
Library using the MA47 subroutine.

Subject: A MATLAB Library for Interval Arithmetic

This is to announce version 3 of

INTLAB - A Matlab library for interval arithmetic routines.

Version 3 covers

- interval arithmetic for real and complex data including vectors
and matrices (very fast),
- interval arithmetic for real and complex sparse matrices (very fast),

- automatic differentiation (forward mode, vectorized computations, fast),
- automatic slopes (sequential approach, slow for many variables),
- rigorous real interval standard functions (fast, very accurate, 3 ulps),
- rigorous complex interval standard functions (fast, rigorous, but not
necessarily sharp inclusions),
- rigorous input/output,
- multiple precision interval arithmetic with error bounds (does the job, slow)

and more. Prerequisite is Matlab 5+. All INTLAB code is written in Matlab
except one routine for switching the rounding mode (the latter even being
superflous for Matlab 6 under Windows).

Major objective is speed and ease of use. Algorithms are fast if high-order
operations can be used; nonlinear function evaluation slows down significantly
due to interpretation overhead and extensive use of operator concept.

The conference program will include minisymposia on various aspects of the
theory and applications of the finite element method. Each of them will be a
two-hour session of 4-6 speakers. The organizing committee strongly encourages
the submission of proposals for minisymposium topics. Please, send your

INTRODUCTION

Numerical methods in physics, chemistry and engineering is the
subject of great activity the last decades.

Computers & Mathematics with Applications, An International
Journal, will publish special issue to the above important
topic. Guest Editors of this issue have defined to be: Dr.
T.E. Simos (Democritus University of Thrace) and Professor G.
Avdelas (Technical University of Crete).

Contribution papers are invited for consideration for publication
in the above special issue. Topics of the issue include, but no
limited to analysis of numerical methods, numerical methods for
differential equations, numerical linear algebra, numerical
approximation, numerical integration, numerical differentiation
and any other aspect of numerical analysis. Emphasis must be

J. H. Wilkinson Fellowship in Scientific Computing.

The appointment will be in the Mathematics and Computer Science
Division, which has strong programs in scientific computing,

interest are algorithms and software for linear algebra,

differentiation; software tools for parallel computing; and

Chair and Assistant/Associate Professorships in Mathematics and Computer
Science

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore invites applications for the
following tenure-track positions in the Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science.

1. Chair, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science: This is a
twelve-month faculty appointment. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in
Mathematics or Computer Science with at least seven (7) years experience at
the university level; notable achievements in research relevant to the
department; a track record of acquiring outside funding and an understanding
of academic administration at the departmental level. Candidates must have
strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate successful management skills in
dealing with racially diverse students and faculty. Responsibilities of the
successful candidate include teaching, research outreach and administering
the departmental programs. Salary is commensurate with experience.

2. Assistant/Associate Professorships in Computer Science: Candidates
must have an earned Ph.D. in Computer Science or related fields. Prior
teaching experience at the University level required. Candidate must have
record of scholarly and research accomplishments, effectiveness in

include twelve hours undergraduate teaching is computer science and

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, is a historically black, public,
1890's Land Grant Institution in the University System of Maryland. It is
located in a small, historic town of Princess Anne, which is two-hour drive
from any one of several mid-Atlantic metropolitan areas-Norfolk, Washington
DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia-providing access to many urban amenities.
The university has an enrollment of 3300 students and offers degrees at the
Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral level. The Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science offers bachelor degrees in Mathematics,

The Integrated Systems Analysis department at Potsdam Institute for
Climate Impact Research welcomes applications for a IIa BAT-O (1/2)
post-graduate research position in Numerical Simulation and Analysis of
the long-term co-evolution biosphere and geosphere.

You will join an active research group with an already very well
structured project. The post-graduate studies will involve numerical
simulation of geophysical models. The work will develop in a very
friendly interdisciplinary team environment and involves collaborating
with other international universities and research institutes. This
position is in a first moment until December 2000 but ideal for a
graduate willing to do a PhD since, upon performance, it is likely to be
extended another two years.

We expect you to have a degree in mathematics, physics, engineering or
computer science with a strong numerical analysis background. You should
have knowledge in scientific programming in either Fortran or C being
