Ninth Leslie Fox Prize Meeting. Dundee. June 28, 1999.

After much deliberation, the Fox Prize Adjudicators (Iain Duff (chairman),
Nick Trefethen, and Arieh Iserles) have chosen the finalists for the
Ninth Leslie Fox Prize Competition. The field of entries was very strong
and this was no easy task. The Adjudicators would like to extend their thanks
and encouragement to those who were unsuccessful on this occasion.

The finalists will present their talks at the Leslie Fox Prize
meeting in Dundee on Monday June 28th 1999, on the day immediately
preceding the 18th Biennial Meeting on Numerical Analysis. For details
of this meeting see: http://www.mcs.dundee.ac.uk:8080/~dfg/97conf/
For information on the Leslie Fox Prize see:
http://www.numerical.rl.ac.uk/isd/fox.html

The finalists (in a randomly chosen speaking order), with the titles of their
talks, are:

Vincent Heuveline Arnoldi-Faber method for large non-Hermitian eigenvalue
problem.

Aurelian Bejancu Convergence properties of surface spline interpolation.

Paul Houston Adaptive Lagrange-Galerkin methods for unsteady
convection-diffusion problems.

Reha Tutuncu Quadratic convergence of potential-reduction methods for
degenerate problems.

Ross A Lippert The geometry of double eigenvalues.

Niles A Pierce Adjoint recovery of superconvergent functionals from PDE
approximations.

Subject: Laguerre Polynomials in Two Variables

I am looking for information on approximating functions in two
variables by Laguerre polynomials in (0,infinity)x(0,infinity).
Can anyone provide me with references?

In particular, I am interested in the convergence of the n-th
interpolating polynomial to the function in the appropriate
weighted norm (on a weighted L-2 space). The proof in one
variable is established (since 1991 at least).

Thank you very much to anyone who can help me on this issue.

Subject: Memory Snooping Software

We are pleased to announce the release of the ALICE Memory Snooper
(AMS) software package, http://www.mcs.anl.gov/ams. The AMS allows one
to monitor (and safely modify) the variables (including arrays) in any
running sequential or parallel application code. With the AMS, you will
no longer have to pepper your code with print statements to know where
it is as it runs!

One may attach and detach from the running application at any time and
with any number of simultaneous viewers. We currently provide bindings
for FORTRAN, C, Matlab, and Java. The AMS runs on Windows and most
major versions of Unix. A graphical user interface in Java is also
provided.

The AMS complements, not replaces, the functionality of MPI,
http://www.mcs.anl.gov/mpi and packages such as PAWS (Parallel
Application Workspace), http://www.acl.lanl.gov/PAWS. The AMS is not
intended as a complete parallel framework or distributed run-time
system, rather it is a simple, focused toolkit that can be easily
instrumented into application codes or software libraries and used in
conjunction with frameworks or runtime systems. The AMS most closely
resembles CUMULVS, http://www.epm.ornl.gov/cs/cumulvs.html, except we
do not require the use of PVM, and we use threads to provide
completely asynchronize interaction.

The most recent release of PETSc (2.0.24), http://www.mcs.anl.gov/petsc,
is already partially instrumented for the AMS, allowing one to easily
monitor long running PETSc applications.

We are very interested in user feedback, please send it to
ams-maint@mcs.anl.gov.

Subject: Parallel Sparse Linear Equations Solver

S+ is a fast parallel direct solver for sparse linear equations

with partial pivoting. Numerous techniques are incorporated to improve
load balancing and caching performance, and reduce space consumption.

The 1.0 release of the MPI-based S+ is now available at the following

Subject: DRAMA Project Steering Workshop

Second Announcement
3rd DRAMA Steering Workshop

Dynamic load-balancing for
parallel mesh-based applications
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leuven, Belgium
September 6th - 8th, 1999

The DRAMA Steering Workshops:

The DRAMA Project (Dynamic Re-Allocation of Meshes for Finite Element
Applications) is an ESPRIT LTR project whose central aim is the development
of a library to support dynamic load- balancing for parallel message-passing,
mesh-based applications. The library is evaluated and validated using the
industrial simulation codes FORGE3 (metal forging), PAM-CRASH (crashworthiness)
and PAM-STAMP (metal stamping). The previous Steering Workshops have provided
the project with the possibility of interacting with external experts to
ensure both state-of-the-art components within the library and the generality
of the approach for a wide range of applications.
The 3rd and final workshop will present the DRAMA approach to a wider audience, provide a forum for researchers to discuss new developments in the area of
parallel dynamic and adaptive methods and look ahead to post-project
interactions and collaborations.

Call for Participation:

In addition to presentations and demonstrations by the DRAMA Consortium
and keynote lectures by:
- R. Biswas, NASA Ames, USA,
- B.A. Hendrickson, Sandia National Lab., USA,
- N. Weatherill, U. Wales Swansea, UK,
there will be the possibility for a limited number of contributed presentations.
Areas of interest are:
- parallel algorithms for dynamic mesh partitioning
- parallel applications with adaptive meshing and/or dynamic load-balancing
- parallel applications with requirements for dynamic load balancing.

Participants wishing to contribute a presentation should send a short
abstract (max. 1 page) by 30 June 1999 (to lonsdale@ccrl-nece.technopark.gmd.de,
or to the address below). Inclusion of the presentation in the agenda will
be notified by 31 July 99.

The workshop proceedings will be published on the project web-page -
contributions (extended abstracts/papers/presentations) in PostScript,
HTML or PDF formats will be accepted. Subsequently, a selection of full
papers will be assembled for publication in a special edition of a scientific
journal.

Registration:

People wishing to register for the workshop - whether intending to
make a presentation or not - or requiring further information are asked
to contact:
Ms. M. Paseka, C&C Research Laboratories, NEC Europe Ltd., Rathausallee

Tel.: +49-2241-92520, Fax.: +49-2241-925299
Email: paseka@ccrl-nece.technopark.gmd.de
A minimal participation fee to cover organisational costs will be charged.
