Subject: Free Boundary Problem

Dear NA Net

Can someone point me out references about how to solve the 2-phase
Stefan problem numerically (especially using method of lines) ? My
problem is to solve the directional solidification of binary alloys in
the presence of a mushy zone. I have tried several schemes but do not
work well.

VideoMath Festival
at the
International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM'98)
Berlin, Germany, August 18 - 27, 1998

CALL FOR VIDEOS

Dear colleague,

The International Congress of Mathematicians 1998 (ICM'98) will host
"VideoMath", a festival of the most outstanding mathematical videos, to
be publicly shown in a fullsized theater at ICM'98 in August 1998 in
Berlin.

VideoMath is part of the "cultural program" at ICM'98, and shall attract
a broad audience: ICM attendees, students, teachers, and the proverbial
man-in-the-street with an inclination towards mathematics. Performances
are open to the public and will take place during the period of the
conference.

Entries for VideoMath are solicited from all areas of mathematical
visualization and computer graphics. Submissions should meet the highest
standards of mathematical content, visualization techniques, artistic
design, and technical quality. An international program committee will
select the best contributions for inclusion in the festival show. A
PRIZE of DM 5000 will be awarded to recognize the most outstanding
contribution.

The deadline for submissions is April 3, 1998.

Please, inform colleagues at your department and motivate visualization
experts to submit videos. A poster with a "Call for Videos" has recently
been sent to many institutions world-wide.

Detailed information about the festival and the submission process is
available at

http://www-sfb288.math.tu-berlin.de/VideoMath/

For inquiries and requests to poster and information material, please,
end an e-mail to

video-math@zib.de

We thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Hans-Christian Hege (ZIB Berlin)
Konrad Polthier (TU Berlin)

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SPECTRAL AND HIGH ORDER METHODS
ICOSAHOM 98
Tel Aviv, Israel
June 22-26, 1998

SPONSORED BY
US AFOSR (UK), Tel Aviv Univ (Israel), NSF (USA), AMIF (EU)
SCIENTIFIC COMITTEE
S. Abarbanel, C. Bernardi, C. Canuto, M. Deville, R. Glowinski,
D. Gottlieb, B. Gustafsson, G. Karniadakis, H.O. Kreiss, Y. Maday,

LOCAL ORGANIZING COMITTEE
S. Abarbanel (Chair), B. Artzi, D. Givoli, E. Turkel

OBJECTIVE OF CONFERENCE
The main objective of ICOSAHOM continues to be to bring together
researchers with interest in the theoretical, applied and computa-
tional aspects of high order and spectral methods for the solution
of partial differential equations. Subjects include, but are not
limited to, spectral methods, high-order finite difference and
finite element methods, h-p finite element methods and wavelet
based methods. Applications include problems appearing in electro-
magnetics, fluid and structural dynamics, efficient solvers and
preconditioners for high order methods and parallel aspects of
spectral and high order methods. It is anticipated that
ICOSAHOM'98 will bring together a broad group of scientists
and engineers with a very varied interest in the theory and
application of spectral and high order methods for the solution
solution of a multitude of problems.

WORKSHOP IN HONOR OF PROF. V.S. RYABEN'KII
An integral part of ICOSAHOM'98 will be a workshop in honor
of Professor V.S. Ryaben'kii for his many contributions to
numerical analysis during a professional career spanning a
period of 50 years.

The workshop honoring Prof. Ryaben'kii will consist of a number of
talks on the different aspects of numerical methods. Close to 20
leading mathematicians and computational scientists have tentatively
agreed to contribute to the workshop.

REGISTRATION AND ACCOMMODATION
ICOSAHOM'98 will take place during the week of June 22-26, 1998
at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza in Herzelia, Israel. Herzelia is
a resort, beautifully located next to the Mediterranean, north
of Tel Aviv.

The fee for regular conference participants amounts
to US\$ 180,- while the fee for students is US\$ 100,-

A block of rooms have been reserved at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza
at an approximate rate of US\$ 155,- per night for a single room,
including breakfast. Alternatives, all in walking distance from
the conference center, include The Sharon, with rates starting
from US\$ 88,- per night for a single room and a limited number
of rooms at Tadmor Hotel starting at US\$ 58,- per night for single
occupancy.

The accommodation rates are all tentative. Further information
regarding accommodation and registration will follow in early
spring of 1998.

SUPPORT FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS
A limited number of young scientists attending the conference
may receive partial support for the travel, accommodation and
conference fee. The Scientific Committee invites applications
for partial support along with the submitted abstract. The
applications should contain a short CV of the applicant along
with a motivation for the requested support. Only contributing
conference attendees will be considered for partial support.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND WORKSHOP ORGANIZERS
The Scientific Committee invites abstracts to be submitted,
describing the content of 30 min talks. These abstracts should not
be less than a page while not exceeding two pages and should be
submitted either in hard copy to the conference office or by
e-mail in LaTeX-style to the conference e-mail address. The abstract
will undergo a thorough referee-process prior to acceptance and
those accepted for presentation will be collected and given to
conference attendees at the beginning of the conference.

The Scientific Committee also invites organizers to submit suggestions
for topical workshops related to the theme of the conference. These
workshops should consist of segments of 2 hours with contributed
talks. It will be the responsibility of the workshop organizer
to solicit talks for the proposed workshop. The Scientific Committee
asks that organizers submit a brief motivation for the proposed
workshop, along with a tentative list of speakers participating in
the workshop. Partial support for a very limited number of workshop
organizers is available.

IMPORTANT DATES - EXTENDED DEADLINES !
March 1, 1998 - Deadline for submission of abstracts
Deadline for workshop proposals
Deadline for application of partial support

FURTHER AND FUTURE INFORMATION
Further information and future announcements can be obtained by writing an
e-mail to ICOSAHOM@cfm.brown.edu requesting to be included on the mailing
list of ICOSAHOM 98.
