Subject: Unsolicited Email to NA-NET members

Several NA-DIGEST subscribers have complained about receiving
unsolicited commerical mail through NA-NET.

The NA-NET code has recently been modified to make such abuse more
difficult, and to refuse to forward mail from certain known spammers.
In the near future we will also cause NA-NET to refuse to forward
any message that lacks a valid return address. (Many spammers
forge the return address on mail that they send.)

However, since it is difficult to reliably distinguish spam from
legitimate mail, we cannot promise that this filtering will be
completely effective abuse.

The NA-NET mailing list has not been available to the public since
September 1996.

Keith Moore
na-net postmaster

p.s. Many people also complained because the address in the To field
of the spam was not the same as their address. This is due to a bug
in the spammer's software -- even if it sends the message to several
recipients at once, it only includes the address of the first recipient.

Subject: Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis on CDROM

ETNA on CDROM

The Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis (ETNA) was one of the
first completely electronic scientific journals when it was launched four
years ago. ETNA publishes papers in numerical analysis and applications.

ETNA has the following features:

* Manuscripts submitted to ETNA undergo peer review.
* Mathematical Reviews reviews all articles appearing in ETNA.
* Manuscripts may have color graphics.
* No annual page limitations makes fast publication possible.
* Key word search available.
* Forward referencing.
* ETNA can be accessed via the Internet by web browsers, ftp and e-mail.
* First four volumes of ETNA available on CDROM.

The CDROM version of ETNA can be accessed by a web browser (Mosaic).
Accessing ETNA in this manner is much more convenient than accessing ETNA
over the Internet when the Internet connection is slow. Many new PCs are
equipped with a CDROM reader. This makes the CDROM a convenient storage
medium for individuals and libraries.

The first ETNA CDROM contains papers with leading-edge contributions to
research in the following diverse areas of numerical analysis, analysis,
linear algebra and applications:

- conjugate gradient iterative methods and their variants,
for solving linear systems and for obtaining eigenvalues;
- general iterative methods for systems of linear equations,
including parallel synchronous and asynchronous multi-splitting and
inner-outer iteration methods;
- singular value and QR decompositions of matrices;
- applications of domain decomposition, multigrid, and finite
- element methods, and their preconditioning;
- Runge-Kutta methods, solutions of differential-algebraic
and Riccati equations in ordinary differential equation theory;
- numerical treatment of analysis problems, including Gaussian
quadrature, Pade' approximations and continued fractions, and the
Riemann Hypothesis.
- applications of numerical analysis, e.g., in signal processing and
control theory.

In addition the CDROM contains a variety of public domain software programs
(for Windows, Windows95, Sun Unix, SGI Unix, HP Unix, Digital Unix, and
Macintosh operating systems) that will allow you to display and print the
manuscripts included on the CDROM.

In order to defray the cost of producing the CDROM and to cover
shipping (by air mail), we are charging $25 for each CDROM. If you
wish to purchase the ETNA CDROM, please send $25.00 (money order,
travelers check, personal check for a U.S. bank or bank draft in U.S.

Subject: New Book on Neural Adaptive Control

Just published:

``Evolutionary Learning Algorithms for Neural Adaptive Control''

by Dimitris C. Dracopoulos

Springer Verlag, Perspectives in Neural Computing Series,
Series Editor: J. Taylor, August 1997, ISBN: 3-540-76161-6, GBP24.99

Neural networks and evolutionary algorithms are constantly expanding
their field of application to a variety of new domains. One area of
particular interest is their applicability to control and adaptive
control systems: the limitations of the classical control theory
combined with the need for greater robustness, adaptivity and
``intelligence'' make neurocontrol and evolutionary control
algorithms an attractive (and in some cases, the only) alternative.

After an introduction to neural networks and genetic algorithms,
this volume describes in detail how neural networks and evolutionary
techniques (specifically genetic algorithms and genetic programming)
can be applied to the adaptive control of complex dynamic systems
(including chaotic ones). A number of examples are presented and
useful tips are given for the application of the techniques
described. The fundamentals of dynamic systems theory and classical
adaptive control are also given.

Subject: Report on the ILAS Symposium on Fast Algorithms

Report on the

International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS) Symposium
on
Fast Algorithms for Control, Signals and Image Processing

6-8 June 1997, Winnipeg, Canada

Principal Symposium Organizers; P.N.Shivakumar (IIMS, Manitoba),
Dianne O'Leary (Maryland), Hans Schneider (Wisconsin),Bob Plemmons
(Wake Forest).

This International Linear Algebra Society Symposium was organized
by the Institute of Industrial and Mathematical Sciences (IIMS) at the
University of Manitoba, Canada. The Symposium was a Participating
Institutions Conference of the Institute for Mathematics and its
Applications (IMA) and was co-sponsored by the Fields Institute
the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques and Manitoba HVDC Research
Center.

The three day meeting brought together researchers from the areas of
Control Theory, Signal and Image Processing, and Computational Linear
Algebra to discuss recent advances, trends, and future directions for
research on fast algorithms. This interdisciplinary gathering emphasized
modern methods in scientific computing and relevant linear algebra.

On the first day, three two hour short courses were given. Stephen Boyd
(Stanford) spoke on Convex Optimization in Control, Signals and Image
Processing; Raymond Chan (Hong Kong) discussed Iterative Methods for
Toeplitz Systems; Tom Kailath (Stanford) gave an introduction to Fast
Algorithms for Structured Matrices. These talks are available on the
authors' websites. Plenary talks were given by C.Paige (McGill),
G.W.Stewart (Maryland), Haesun Park (Minnesota), L.Kaufman (Bell Labs),
M.Hanke (Karlsruhe), E.Chu (Guelph), and S.Qiao (McMaster). In addition
there were six minisymposia and three contributed paper sessions. In all,
there were about 80 participants in the Symposium.

An important feature of the meeting was the overlap with the Canadian
Mathematical Society(CMS) Summer meeting (June 6-9). A special Session
on Linear Algebra at the CMS Meeting (June 9) was organized by IIMS with
main speakers Roger Horn (Utah) and Paul van Dooren (Louvain). This was
a unique experience with the sessions of each meeting open to the other
and having common coffee breaks, banquet and excursions. Several members
of the Symposium also took part in a Graduate Student Seminar of CMS,
organized by IIMS. The speakers were Hans Schneider and Paul van Dooren.

Social occasions included the banquet, a 'Dinner in the City', and a
CMS/ILAS barbecue. After the meeting there were many letters of praise
regarding the scientific content and the friendly atmosphere of the
meetings.

A special issue of "Linear Algebra and Its Applications" will be devoted
to papers presented at the Symposium.
