Subject: Mihai Anitescu is Wilkinson Fellow
Mihai Anitescu of the University of Iowa has been named the 1997
Wilkinson Fellow in Scientific Computing. He will join the
Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National
Laboratory for a one-year term beginning this summer.
In announcing the award, the selection committee members cited
Anitescu's exceptional insight into physical phenomena,
communication skills, publication record, and broad background in
electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and computational
science. He was the committee's first choice in a strong field
of candidates for this fellowship.
Anitescu received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Iowa in
May 1997, under the direction of Florian Potra. He has extensive
experience in modeling contact dynamics problems, an area with
important applications in robotics. In particular, Anitescu has
developed efficient algorithms for real-time interactive
simulation in virtual environments.
Anitescu will join the faculty of the Mathematics Department at
the University of Pittsburgh in September of 1998.
The Wilkinson Fellowship was created by Argonne's Mathematics and
Computer Science Division in memory of Dr. James Hardy Wilkinson,
F.R.S., who for many years acted as a consultant and guiding
spirit for such efforts as the EISPACK and LINPACK projects. The
fellowship is intended to assist a young scientist engaged in
state-of-the-art research in scientific computing.

Subject: Jostle v2.0, Mesh Partitioning & Load-balancing Software
We would like to announce the release of the JOSTLE software package
Version 2.0 for partitioning unstructured meshes for use on distributed
memory parallel computers. Executables of the software are freely available
for academic and research purposes, but interested users are required
to sign a licencing agreement.
The code is designed to partition unstructed meshes (for example,
finite element or finite volume meshes) and can also be used to
repartition and load-balance existing partitions (such as those
deriving from adaptive refined meshes). Jostle is extremely fast
and provides high quality partitioning and load-balancing.
Version 2.0 is considerably faster and produces higher
quality partitions than version 1.0. Some sample comparisons are
shown in the table below (E_c is the number of cut edges, and
t(s) the runtime in seconds on a sun workstation for two different
meshes and varying P - the number of partitions)

Dear colleague:
The President of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) has
asked the Organizing Committee of the International Congress of
Mathematicians 1998 (ICM98, Aug 18 to 27, 1998 in Berlin, see URL:
http://elib.zib.de/ICM98) to consider arranging - in addition to the
scientific program under the responsibility of the ICM98 program
committee - a special session on mathematical software.
No special focus or form of presentation was suggested. The only wish
was to cover a broad spectrum. Thus, if possible, the session should
include general purpose computer algebra systems as well as, e.g.,
software systems specialized on number theory, algebra or optimization,
or systems assisting the work of the mathematicians in some other
specific way. The session should be open for presentations from
commercial and academic software development groups.
This is the first call for contributions to get an idea about how
many groups or companies are interested in such presentations and to
find out their specific wishes.
The current idea is that the Organizing Committee will set up a small
committee to select up to 10 software systems for oral 30 minute
presentations during one or two afternoons of the congress. Detailed
plans can only be made if a good estimate on the number of participants
is available.
The organizing committee is also contemplating to offer, for a fee to be
determined, space for computer demonstrations of the software packages
during the congress - possibly in connection with the book exhibition at
ICM98. Technical support from the Technische Universitaet Berlin, where
the congress will take place, will be very modest, though.
Any response or comment on this first call for participation is

Applicants should have a PhD in applied mathematics, preferably in the
field of numerical analysis of partial or ordinary differential equations or

It is desirable that they become involved in one of the projects of the group,

Starting from Sept.15, 1997, the Weierstrass Institute offers a
research position for an applied Mathematician in the field of
Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations and/or
Nonlinear Optimization.
Candidates should participate in the development of numerical methods
for models arising in areas like semiconductor devices, material
sciences and transport in porous media.
We offer the opportunity to develop and implement own ideas within a
creative interdisciplinary environment consisting of applied
mathematicians and numerical analysts as well as project partners from
research and industry.
Applicants should have outstanding knowledge of one or more areas in
numerical mathematics. Familiarity with modern programming languages
and software concepts is necessary as well.
The position is available for a period of 3 years, an extension up to
5 years is possible.
The salary is regulated by the German BAT contract: BAT-O IIa.

Statement of Purpose
The area of parallel and distributed computing has reached a point where
new issues and trends require a professional forum. PDCP will provide an
avenue for publication of original refereed papers addressing these issues
and trends. The areas of primary interest involve algorithm development,
implementation and execution on real-world parallel architectures,
application of parallel and distributed computing to the solution of
real-life problems. In addition, to recognize a clearly developing trends,
which suggest that the future of computing will have a parallel and/or
distributed form, PDCP will address the cosequences of these trends in the
following areas:
