ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULTS OF A QUESTIONNAIRE SET UP BY THE
EUROPEAN NUMERICS IN CONTROL NETWORK N I C O N E T

More about NICONET (http://www.win.tue.nl/wgs/niconet.html)

The Commission of the European Communities has given an exploratory award to
WGS in order to set up a thematic Numerics in Control network in the field
of Industrial and Applied Technologies, entitled NICONET (contract number:
BRRT-CT96-0038). The aim is to formalise and extend our current collaboration
into a European network to coordinate the development of robust numerical
software for control systems analysis and design.
Such software is an essential ingredient in modern computer aided control
system design (CACSD) and thus for the future of high-tech European industry.

In order to evaluate the proposed network, we have set up a questionnaire
for obtaining:
1. an inventory of existing research activities in control software;
2. a list of potential partners ready to contribute actively to NICONET,
3. an assessment of the relevance of the NICONET objectives and activities.

The results of this questionnaire are now available and reported in our
WGS newsletter 11, which can be obtained:
- via WWW at http://www.win.tue.nl/wgs/newslet.html),
- via anonymous ftp from wgs.esat.kuleuven.ac.be as a compressed file
issue11.ps.Z in the directory pub/WGS/NEWSLETTER.

Readers who are interested in this activity can still fill in the
questionnaire in order to identify themselves for potential future
collaboration. This questionnaire should be returned to Sabine Van Huffel
and is available by anonymous ftp (at wgs.esat.kuleuven.ac.be in the
directory pub/WGS/NEWSLETTER) and as a form on the World Wide Web
(http://www.win.tue.nl/wgs/niconet.html).

Subject: Computational Finance

VALUING FINANCIAL DERIVATIVES USING LOW DISCREPANCY SEQUENCES

In 1992 it was generally believed that low discrepancy
sequences were not suitable for high dimensional integration. In the
Autumn of that year, software construction and testing of low discrep-
ancy sequences for valuing financial derivatives was started at
Columbia. A model CMO provided by Goldman Sachs, which involved the
calculation of 360 dimensional integrals, was tested using Monte Carlo
and an improvement of the Sobol sequence. The conclusion was that the
modified Sobol sequence consistently outperformed Monte Carlo. This was
first reported in January, 1994 [1] with more details provided in
[2], [3].

Papageorgiou and Traub [4] tested what Tezuka called generalized
Faure points. They concluded that these points were superior to Sobol
points for the model problem. Particularly important for financial
computation, a reasonably small error could be achieved with few
evaluations. For example, just 170 generalized Faure points were
sufficient to achieve an error of less than one part in a hundred for
the hardest tranche of the 360 dimensional CMO.

We have been testing low discrepancy sequences for other
financial derivatives and for problems in other disciplines. Results
will be made available in the near future.

Subject: Elliptic PDE Eigenfunction Software Sought

Greetings NA digesters,

I'm seeking software suggestions for a current interest of mine.

My interest is in manipulating and doing various calculations with
constant-value contours of numerically computed elliptic PDE
eigenfunctions. More specifically, of interest are contours for the
principal eigenfunction and others corresponding to low magnitude
eigenvalues of the Laplace operator on general 2D domains. The domains
usually (but not always) would be simply connected. Dirichlet conditions
would apply on their boundaries.

The ideal PDE eigenfunction software for me would perform well on a
workstation, minimize the amount of code development and integration
I need to do, and include some graphical output capabilities. I could
integrate the pieces (e.g., a grid generator with a finite element
eigensolver, ...), but is that necessary in 1997?

Any suggestions you might have on available 2D elliptic PDE eigenfunction
software would be greatly appreciated. (I am aware of the MATLAB PDE
Toolbox product, but haven't spoken with anyone who has used it.)

Thanks!

Subject: Summer School on Multilevel Preconditioning Methods

SUMMER SCHOOL on
Multilevel preconditioning methods with parallel implementation
aspects and applications in Scientific Computing
May 19--26, 1997, University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands

The summer school will concentrate on methods, concepts, techniques for
solving large scale Scientific Computation problems. The methods in focus
are iterative methods with multilevel preconditioning, which offer rates
of convergence, (almost) independent of the size of the problems
(a crucial issue for very large scale real-life applications) and optimal
computational complexity. Two important issues are specially emphasized:
- efficient parallel implementations of methods of the above type, and
- applicability of the methods to practical problems in which large scale
linear and nonlinear systems have to be solved, especially for problems
originating from material sciences, biomedical computations, and
computational mechanics.

The summer school is a non-profit event organized by the Department of
Mathematics of the University of Nijmegen, with the financial support of
TMR (EU), the Mathematical Research Institute (MRI), The Netherlands. The
summer school is primarily intended to provide training in the above topics
for students and researchers from countries from the European Community.

TOPICS:
-algebraic multilevel iteration methods, multigrid methods, domain
decomposition methods, level set methods,
-adaptive mesh refinement techniques, error estimators
-symmetric, nonsymmetric, indefinite problems,
-robust solution methods, uniform convergence with respect to meshsize and
small perturbation parameters,
-nonstandard problems, applications, mostly in material and in medical
sciences;
-parallel computations, scalability, efficiency, optimality.

DEADLINE: Application form sent before April 10, 1997.

NOTE: The number of participants is not restricted but we aim at 30.
The target groups for TMR projects are:
- researchers aged 35 or under, within the Community and the Associated States;
- researchers whose place of work is in a less-favoured region;
- women researchers;
- researchers who work in industry.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION IN NUMERICAL ANALYSIS

A postdoctoral research position is available at the Rutherford
Appleton Laboratory (URL http://www.cclrc.ac.uk/ral/index.html) to
work in the Numerical Analysis Group (URL
http://www.dci.clrc.ac.uk/Groups/NAG/). The post is supported
by a Long Term Research (LTR) Project funded by the European Union. The
Project is charged with developing new parallel algorithms for the
direct solution of sparse systems of equations and for their
preconditioning. These algorithms will be implemented as portable
prototypes and will be integrated into a public-domain Library. The
prototype codes will be extensively tested on a range of industrial
applications.

The work can commence immediately. The position is for the two years to
31st December 1998. Applicants must have considerable experience of
programming in Fortran and of using standard numerical analysis
libraries such as BLAS and LAPACK. Applicants should also have
experience of working in a parallel computing environment and be
familiar with the message passing systems MPI. A strong research
capability in numerical analysis, with emphasis on numerical linear
algebra techniques for solving large-scale problems, is essential.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate their ability to communicate
effectively in both spoken and written English, and to work both
independently and as part of a group. Applicants must be willing to
travel within Europe and collaborate closely with European partners.

Appointment will be to the Council Pay Band 5 which has a pay range
of 14,828 to 24,333 pounds; starting salary will depend
on experience.

Potential applicants should register their interest in the position
by sending a CV by email to Jennifer Scott (J.Scott@rl.ac.uk)
no later than Thursday 6 February 1997. Applicants should indicate
when they would be available to take up the position should
their application be successful.

Applicants should mention that they are interested in the postdoctoral
research position at RAL which was advertised in The Guardian on Saturday
January 25, quoting ref 1379/96.
