PASCAL KOIRAN WINS
JOURNAL OF COMPLEXITY BEST PAPER AWARD

Pascal Koiran, Ecole Normal Superieure de Lyon, has won the
JOURNAL OF COMPLEXITY'S Best Paper Award for 1996 for his paper
"Hilbert's Nullensatz is in the Polynomial Hierarchy." The paper
appeared in the December, 1996 issue of the Journal.
The Awards Committee consisted of Stefan Heinrich and
Steve Smale. The Award was presented at the Foundations of
Computational Mathematics (FoCM) Conference in Rio de Janeiro
on January 8, 1997.
The Best Paper Award carries a prize of $3,000 and a
certificate. Pascal Koiran is the first winner of this annual award.

Dear NA-netters,

Most discussions of the convergence properties of stationary iterative
methods deal only with real matrices. In recent years a number of
applications have appeared that require the solution of a system of
linear equations in which the coefficient matrix is large, sparse, and
complex symmetric. What are the most general conditions that
guarantee convergence of a stationary iterative method (in particular
SOR) for a complex symmetric matrix?

I am currently writing a multivolume treatise entitled Matrix
Algorithms. The present Volume I is entitled Basic Decompositions. I
have recently rewritten the third chapter and completed a fourth.

The first two chapters contain introductory material from mathematics
and computer science and the third chapter is on Gaussian elimination.

I am distributing the book in the hope that it will be helpful to
others and that others will be willing to help me with their comments
and corrections. Please feel free to make copies for your personal
use. However, if you want to make copies to distribute to a class,

"Parallel Programming with MPI." It is an elementary introduction
to programming parallel systems that uses the MPI 1.1 library of

single-processor systems, but who have little or no experience
programming multiprocessor systems. It is an extensive revision and

Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program
Summer Program in Pure and Applied Mathematics for 1997
at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville
sponsored by the National Science Foundation and Tennessee Science Alliance

The Department of Mathematics of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville,
will sponsor a summer research program for outstanding mathematics
majors. Each student will work on a research project with a mathematics
researcher from the University of Tennessee or Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (which is very near to Knoxville). In addition, there will
be two short courses and a faculty seminar.

Research projects are available in following areas:

algebra, analysis, mathematical ecology, numerical analysis,
differential equations, probability, statistics, topology,
control theory, and differential geometry.

The program will be from May 26, 1997 to July 22, 1997. Each
participant will receive a stipend of $2700. A travel stipend of up
to $350 is available as needed. University housing will be available for
approximately $55 per week.

1997 Barrett Lectures

The University of Tennessee in Knoxville has a series of lectures,
called the Barrett Lectures, held each year since 1970. THe 1997
Barrett Lectures will be held on March 20-22, 1997. The organizers
are Suzanne Lenhart and Philip Schaefer. The theme is "Control
Theory and Applications." The two principal lecturers are

Each principal lecturers will give two lectures. In

from U.S. institutions to attend and present a paper at the U.S.-Czech
Workshop on Iterative Methods and Parallel Computing, to be held on June

The aim of the workshop is to bring together numerical analysts,
specialists in numerical linear algebra and parallel computing,

PROGRAMMING TOOLS FOR PARALLEL COMPUTATION to support the Department
of Defense High Performance Computation Modernization Program. All
qualified researchers are invited to apply.

The goal of the DOD HPC Modernization Program (http://www.hpcm.dren.net/)
is to supply the DOD with world-class computing power for applications.
To this end, the DOD has formed the Programming Environment and
Training (PET) program, a coalition of universities to bring the best
available HPC techniques to bear on DOD problems. The Center for
Research on Parallel Computation (CRPC), headquartered at Rice
University, is leading the PET effort in the area of programming tools.

Responsibilities of the research scientist position are to interact
with HPC users, determine their needs, and supply appropriate software
tools and training to meet those needs. We view "tools" broadly,
including (but not limited to):

* Compilers
* Debuggers
* Performance analysis
* Scientific/math subroutine libraries
* Message-passing libraries
* Scalable input/output systems
* Problem Solving Environments

Depending on the precise needs found, the research scientist may
locate these tools (on the WWW, for example), evaluate tools, extend
some tools, and train users in applying the tools.

The position at the University of Tennessee will involve interaction
with established parallel tools research groups at the University
of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, as well as frequent
trips to the DOD Major Shared Resource Centers (MSRCs) to visit customers,
and to other CRPC sites to consult with researchers.
The position requires a PhD in a computational field or equivalent
experience. The ideal candidate would have a CS degree and strong
experience in running scientific computations. Experience with
developing, evaluating, or using parallel programming tools is also

with support from the Center for Research on Parallel Computation (CRPC)
through the University of Tennessee. CRPC's role is to integrate
the National HPCC Software Exchange (NHSE) (http://www.nhse.org/)
into the overall information infrastructure.
The NHSE is an interface to a distributed collection
of interoperating discipline-oriented software repositories which
collect, evaluate, and disseminate software and related information
produced by and for the Federal HPCC Program.

Responsibilities of the information technologist position are to
develop tools and methodologies for setting up and populating an
interoperable software repository framework for the DOD MSRCs.
The work will involve adapting existing frameworks for maintaining
software repositories the the MSRC environment, developing the
process for populating the repositories, and working with the MSRC
sites to collect, evaluate, and catalog software and maintain the
repository framework.

Expertise is required in one or more of the following areas:

Software Cataloging and Classification
Software Testing and Evaluation
Indexing and Searching
Web Technologies
Database Management Systems
C, Unix, Perl, and Java Programming

Some familiarity with parallel scientific programming is also desired.

The position requires a master's degree in computer or information
science or equivalent experience. Also required is U.S. citizenship
or permanent U.S. resident status.
