Subject: Math-Net Links to the Mathematical World

I am glad to announce a new - yet experimental - WWW information service for
Mathematics, the

Math-Net Links to the Mathematical World

http://elib.zib-berlin.de:88/Math-Net/Links/math.html

The Math-Net Links are a first collection of about 700 mathematical resources
and related pointers into the Internet consisting of

o Math-Web, the core collection - ordered by subject - of pointers
to the mathematics information resources, including the field of
Scientific Computing,
o Math-Net, a collection - ordered by locations and names - of links
to mathematical institutions, centers and larger research
projects, at present most of them from Germany,
o The Mathematical Museum and Expositions, an extension of the
Math-Web into History, Art and Natural Sciences, with a couple of
exits to related virtual museums and exhibitions,
o Electronic Publishing, a collection reflecting discussions on
electronic publishing in mathematics, and also various pointers to
activities and projects related to the more general Digital
Libraries thema, and of
o Internet Resources, containing some pointers to specific Internet
archives which may be of value for the mathematical Internaut.

The Math-Net Links belong to the first steps of the "Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum fuer
Informationstechnik Berlin" (ZIB) towards a "Distributed Information System for
Mathematics", a project planned by the "Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung"
(DMV) for the years from 1996 to 1998.

We will integrate the Math-Net Links into the server of the International
Mathematical Union (IMU) which is being build up at present by ZIB. You
may find the related URLs in the homepage of the Math-Net Links.

Naturally, we hope for suggestions, comments, and also critizism from you in
order to maintain this service in the long run, and to keep it up-to-date.
An activity of this kind lives from world wide contributions. We hope that
you have an idea how to improve this service.

Best regards,
Joachim Luegger

Subject: Seeking Simple Graphics Library for X-windows

Dear Collegues,

I am making scientific simulations and need some simple graphics library
for display of the results in X-windows system. The subroutines should be
higher-level in comparison with Xlib and Motif and be able to:

1. Open a window for graphics (probably using Motif).
2. Plot in the window a pixel, line, and filled polygon in an arbitrary color.
3. (Optional) Plot an axis.

I shall be grateful, if somebody knows any place where to find such a
shareware.

Yours,

Alexander Puhov, E-mail: jxm1@ipp-garching.mpg.de

Subject: Front-ends for Numerical Simulation Packages

My MSc student is developing a graphical front-end for numerical
simulations that is intended to be general in nature (that is, not
application specific). This front-end will track the simulation so that
the user can take corrective actions (modify parameters or terminate) as
necessary. The simulation might be the solution of a large system of
ODEs or PDEs, a large optimization problem, etc. The intended platform is
UNIX. Is anyone aware of similar work that has been done and can point us
to some references?

Thanks,
Fred

Position available at CERFACS

We are looking for someone at post-doc level with experience, interest,
and background (with publications) in both mathematics and computer
science.
The position is open in the framework of an ESPRIT contract in connection
with European reseach centres and industrial partners. For this project
we want someone with experience both in parallel computing and
optimization techniques. Basically, we have to identify the most
appropriate methods for solving optimization problems (arising in
Multi Body Simulation) suitable for a implementation on a parallel
platform. The type of target computer has to be selected according to the
parallel features of the selected numerical techniques, it may be either
shared memory multi-CPU workstation or network of computers. Once a
technique and a platform have been selected, the implementation will
have to be performed. Some issues related to parallel computing on a
network of computers will also be addressed (fault-tolerance, load
balancing, ...).
The research to be developed in the framework of this contract is clearly
industrially oriented.

The position is in the Parallel Algorithm Project at CERFACS,
where the main research activities are :
- Large sparse matrix calculations:
- direct linear solvers
- iterative linear solvers, preconditioning
- eigensolvers
- Domain decomposition
- Large scale nonlinear systems and optimization
- Reliability of numerical software
- Heterogeneous computing
