Subject: Eigenvalue Problems for Tridiagonal Systems

I would like to hear what currently are believed to be ``methods-of-choice''
for dealing with eigenvalue problems for complex, tridiagonal systems. No
symmetry is assumed, and in particular, the matrix is *not* Hermitian.

The problem I have at hand requires only the eigenvalues, not the associated
eigenvectors.

I'd be obliged for any helpful ideas or pointers to related work.

Subject: Postdoctoral Position at Argonne

Postdoctoral Position
Mathematics and Computer Science Division
Argonne National Laboratory

Argonne National Laboratory invites outstanding candidates to apply for
a postdoctoral research position in the Mathematics and Computer
Science Division. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in computer science
or a related discipline and comprehensive knowledge in at least one of
the following areas: compiler design, optimizing compilers, software
tools, software design, or performance evaluation. A good knowledge of
computer architecture and computer systems is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will participate in the development of
algorithms and software tools for the automatic differentiation of
large-scale computer codes. This project is interdisciplinary in
nature and interfaces with efforts in numerical optimization and
parallel computing. Information on the Computational Differentiation
Project can be found in
http://www.mcs.anl.gov/Projects/autodiff/index.html.

The Mathematics and Computer Science Division supports an excellent
computational environment that includes access to high-performance
scientific workstations, a scientific visualization and virtually
reality laboratory, and state-of-the-art parallel computers.

Argonne is located in the southwestern Chicago suburbs, offering the
advantages of affordable housing and good schools, as well as easy
access to the cultural attractions of the city.

Applicants must have received their Ph.D. not more than three years
prior to the beginning of the appointment. The appointment is
available immediately and for a one-year term (renewable).
Applications should be addressed to Walter McFall, Box mcs-postdoc6,
Employment and Placement, Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 S. Cass
Avenue, Argonne, IL 60439, and must include a resume and the names
and addresses of three references. For additional information, contact
Chris Bischof (bischof@mcs.anl.gov).

Argonne is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
Numerical Magnetohydrodynamics

The EEC ``Human Capital and Mobility'' program has established
a numerical MHD grant, which will finance one-year fellowships
in the group detailed below. The grant supports collaborations
in the following principal areas:

MHD Flows and Turbulence
Dynamos
Thermal Convection
Interstellar Medium; Stellar Winds; Solar Wind and Corona
Numerical Techniques for MHD

The fellowships are intended for citizens of the member states of
the European Community (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece,
Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, United
Kingdom) and associated states (Austria, Iceland, Finland, Norway
and Sweden). The salary and associated research costs will be at
the standard rate of each state.

Candidates may not apply in their own country; they should write
directly to the group providing their curriculum vitae, a list of
recent publications, two letters of recommendation and a statement
of research interests.
For the year 1995-6, the deadline for receipt of applications is
March 1st 1995.

Subject: Postdoctoral Position at Xerox PARC

The Theoretical Computer Science and Computational Methods Area of the
Xerox Palo Alto Research Center is recruiting for a postdoctoral position
in algorithms for the 1995-1996 academic year.

The theory group at PARC is part of the larger Computer Science Laboratory,
well known for over twenty years of influential basic research in computer
systems. The theory group itself specializes in theory inspired by practical
problems arising in graphics, physical simulation and modeling, and
information retrieval. Ongoing research includes work in triangulation and
mesh generation, approximate searching, graph algorithms, partitioning and
layout for parallel computation, sparse matrix algorithms, and approximation
algorithms. The unifying theme of our work is its emphasis on algorithms
that find provably good solutions to hard problems arising in practice. The
postdoc will be expected to interact closely with the regular area members,
but will also be free to pursue his or her own research interests.

To apply please submit: a resume; a summary of research interests; and
reprints of publications based on thesis and other research. Applicants
are also responsible for requesting that three or more letters of reference
be sent directly to us. To be assured of full consideration, all material
including reference letters must arrive by March 17, 1995. Direct all
material to:

John R. Gilbert
Xerox Palo Alto Research Center
3333 Coyote Hill Road
Palo Alto, CA 94304
gilbert@parc.xerox.com
fax: 415-812-4471

Applications by email will be accepted. Applications will be acknowledged,
by email if possible, and each applicant will be notified individually as
soon as a decision has been reached on the application.
