Subject: New Book, Methods in Computational Science
Methods in Computational Science
by Johan Hoffman
Computational methods are an integral part of most scientific
disciplines, and a rudimentary understanding of their potential and
limitations is essential for any scientist or engineer. This
self-contained textbook introduces computational science through a set
of methods and algorithms, with the aim of familiarizing the reader
with the field's theoretical foundations and providing the practical
skills to use and develop computational methods. Centered around a set
of fundamental algorithms presented in the form of pseudocode, it
extends the classical syllabus with new material, presents theoretical
material alongside several examples and exercises, and provides Python
implementations of many key algorithms.

Lab in Krakow (Poland) 2022 -- Register Now
Registration is now open for the Fifth Spring School on Lattice
Boltzmann Methods with OpenLB Software Lab that will be held in
Krakow, Poland from 21st to 25th of March 2022. The spring school
introduces scientists and applicants from industry to the theory of
LBM and trains them on practical problems. The first half of the week
is dedicated to the theoretical fundamentals of LBM up to ongoing
research on selected topics. Followed by mentored training on case
studies using OpenLB in the second half, where the participants gain
deep insights into LBM and its applications. This educational concept
offers a comprehensive and personal guided approach to
LBM. Participants also benefit from the knowledge exchange during the
poster session, coffee breaks, and the excursion. We look forward to
your participation.
Keep in mind that the number of participants is limited and that the
registration follows a first come first serve principle.

Science and Technology (https://www.ntnu.edu/). The PhD project will
focus on the development and application of novel computational tools
for the simulation and optimization of multiphysics processes in
large-scale liquid hydrogen transport. The project offers multiple
research directions and ample opportunities to work in a
interdisciplinary research environment and to develop and apply
state-of-the-art computational methods including modern finite
element/volume methods in computational fluid dynamics, topology and
shape optimizations algorithms, or machine-learning and model order
reductions techniques. We are looking for highly motivated candidates
with a sound background in numerical mathematics and a strong interest
in developing novel numerical schemes and applying them to challenging
application problems in science and engineering. The project requires
good programming skills, preferably in C++/Python/Julia, and basic
knowledge in partial differential equations and their numerical
solution. Knowledge/interest in fluid mechanics, scientific computing,
or machine-learning are considered merits. Experience with open
source finite element/volume libraries such as deal.ii, mfem, dune,
FEniCS, firedrake, ngsolve, gridap etc. are advantageous but not
required. Successful candidates will be offered a three-year,
full-time research position. The work place will be Trondheim (Norway).

Subject: PhD Position, Inverse problems with Besov prior, DTU, Denmark
The Technical University of Denmark has an opening for a 3-year PhD
position. The position is part of the research project CUQI,
Computational Uncertainty Quantification for Inverse Problems
(https://www.compute.dtu.dk/english/cuqi).
This position focuses on handling inverse problems with Besov
priors. In the CUQI project we will use Besov priors that are suited
for producing piecewise smooth reconstructions and for detection of
edges and interfaces. This involves the use of linear combinations of
wavelets/frames with random coefficients. The project requires
knowledge of functional analysis and numerical computation and,
preferably, harmonic analysis. Moreover, experience with inverse
problems or Bayesian inference will be a plus.

The applicants will work in a team of PhD students, postdocs and
faculty members in the Section for Scientific Computing, and they must
contribute with research towards the overall goals of the CUQI
project. Applicants are expected to give limited contributions to
teaching and training activities as well as supervision of students.

In the Department for Scientific Computing and Numerical Analysis at
Simula Research Laboratory, Oslo, Norway, we now have an opening for a
PhD candidate to join the project "Data-driven Algorithms for Physical
Simulations" (DataSim).
The goal of the DataSim project is to further develop the theoretical
understanding, applications and software tools related to the hybrid
models combining partial differential equations (PDE) with neural
networks (NN). The topics to be investigated include for example (i)
stability of the learned models based on the chosen NN architecture
and PDE discretization, (ii) multilevel/one-shot training approaches,
(iii) applications of hybrid models in optimal control and links to
physics-informed deep reinforcement learning or (iv) using hybrid
models to improve weather prediction models in partnership with the
Norwegian Meteorological Institute.
