Subject: Clicker question bank for teaching numerical analysis
We are pleased to announce the release of an open-access resource
consisting of 250+ clicker questions (multiple-choice and true-false)
for use in teaching undergraduate numerical analysis. Clicker polling
is a well-established method for increasing active participation of
students in lectures and has also been associated with improving
students' overall learning experience. Devising good questions can be
a huge challenge, and although extensive collections of clicker
questions are available for introductory courses in calculus and
linear algebra, there is very little available that focuses on
numerical analysis. These clicker questions are written in LaTeX so
that they can be easily presented as slides, or else incorporated into
existing LaTeX lecture notes. The question bank has been released
under the Creative Commons ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA) license which
allows anyone free access to use, copy/redistribute, and adapt/remix
the materials. The complete resource can be downloaded from this web
page http://www.sfu.ca/~jstockie/NAclicker/ which includes LaTeX
source code for all questions (and partial solutions), macro
definitions for displaying the questions in various formats (including
beamer and non-beamer slide formats), image files for all plots and
graphics, and the Matlab code used to produce them. This page also
has a link to a preprint which serves as a "how-to guide" of sorts and
also summarizes the results of a student satisfaction survey held in a
"face-to-face" class. With the recent switch in many universities to
on-line learning, instructors may also find these clicker questions a
useful tool for better engaging students in a remote setting. The
question bank is by no means complete and there is clearly room for
improvement in terms of providing more solutions, and expanding the
topics covered. We welcome all comments, corrections and especially
additions to this open educational resource.

Subject: POSTPONED, MOPTA 2020, Aug 2021
After carefully monitoring the COVID-19 epidemic over the last couple
of months and discussing with the rest of the MOPTA organizing
committee and university officials, we have decided that the best and
only responsible course of action is to postpone MOPTA 2020 to August
2021. This was by no means an easy decision. The tentative date for
MOPTA 2021 is August 2-4, 2021.
The MOPTA-AIMMS competition will proceed as planned but will be
virtual. The finalists will be contacted in the next couple of weeks
and presentations will be on-line and made freely available.

Summary: The Center for Research in Mathematical Sciences Applied to
Industry (CEPID-CeMEAI) at University of Sao Paulo opens a
post-doctoral research position in Computational Fluid Dynamics. The
selected candidate will work at Institute of Mathematical and Computer
Sciences of the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Carlos/SP, Brazil. Sao
Paulo Research Foundation provides the financial support with a
monthly salary of BRL 7.373,10 (after taxes). Financial support can
also be provided to cover transportation expenses to move to Sao
Carlos - Brazil. An extra grant is also provided to cover
participation in highly relevant conferences and workshops, as well as
research trips (limited to 15% of the annual amount of the
fellowship). The position is for one year. Project: Multiscale
preconditioners for the simulation of petroleum reservoirs Supervisor:
Fabricio Simeoni de Sousa Description: The simulation of large oil
reservoirs, such as those found in the pre-salt layers of the
Brazilian coast, require the use of computational meshes of billions
of elements, a scale that cannot be handled efficiently with current
commercial simulators. The use of multiscale domain decomposition
methods have shown great scalability potential that allows an
efficient parallelization of meshes with such order of
magnitude. Among the several methods found in the literature, the
Multiscale Robin Coupled Method (MRCM) has become a reference in the
area thanks to great flexibility introduced by the Robin boundary
conditions and the independent choice of interface spaces. The
present project aims the development and implementation of an
efficient preconditioner based on the MRCM in a high performance
computing environment taking advantage of its modern hybrid multicore
architecture. The final goal is to accelerate large-scale simulators
capable of handling meshes with billions of elements, required for the
accurate simulation of large petroleum reservoirs. Professor Sousa
will lead the research, jointly with his research group.
Requirements: Applicants should have PhD in Applied Mathematics,
Computer Sciences, or related fields, with experience in Computational
Fluid Dynamics. Experience in the implementation of multiscale methods
for reservoir simulation is required. We also require experience with
order reduction methods for subsurface flows problems and experience
in high performance computing with C/C++ languages. At least two
scientific journal paper published in the last 5 years in the field of
multiscale methods for reservoir simulation are required. Candidates
must have got their PhD in the last 5 years to be considered for this

group Innovative Algorithms for Fast Accurate Computing, within the

The research group is active on the development of computational
methodologies for artificial decision-making strategies in credible
and high- fidelity simulation of problems of industrial interest,

finite volume methods for large-scale problems, reduced order models
for parametrised problems, machine learning in computational science
and engineering, with applications to solids, fluids and

Aims and Scope: The Journal of Machine Learning for Modeling and
Computing (JMLMC) focuses on the study of machine learning methods for

physical systems, social sciences, biology, etc.; (2) the development
of novel numerical strategies, in conjunction of machine learning

JMLMC is operated on deadlines. For each publishing issue there is a
