Subject: New software package bvpsuite2.0
We are happy to announce the release of a new version of our MATLAB
software package bvpsuite2.0 (Release January 2020).
bvpsuite2.0 provides routines for the solution of arbitrary mixed
order multipoint boundary value problems in ordinary differential
equations in an implicit formulation.
Features include boundary value problems in ODEs, eigenvalue problems
for differential operators, differential-algebraic equations of index
1, path-following for turning point problems.
The problems may be posed on finite or semi-infinite intervals and the
differential operator may depend on unknown parameters.
The package is published under the Berkeley Software Distribution
license and is freely available from

Celebrating Chris Budd: A leader in mathematical innovation turns 60
On the 4th of March 2020 we come together at the University of Bath
and celebrate the 60th birthday of our colleague, friend and
collaborator Chris Budd. The aim of this workshop is to bring together
collaborators, former PhD students and PostDocs of Chris to celebrate
him and his achievements in mathematical innovation over his long and
fruitful academic career. Chris's career was driven by
interdisciplinary research and to honour his achievements in this
regard the invited speakers also reflect this. Similarly, the
audience of this workshop will be from various academic backgrounds
ranging from mathematics to engineering, physics, biology,
pharmacology to name a few. We expect that this workshop will
highlight an outstanding career such as Chris's, its genuine
interdisciplinary approach to applied mathematics and as such will
serve as an exemplar for how innovation and impact in mathematics can
be achieved.

Subject: Computational UQ for Inverse Problems (PhD Course), Denmark, May 2020
We would like to draw your attention to our forthcoming PhD course on
"Computational Uncertainty Quantification for Inverse Problems". The
course will be held from 11 May to 15 May 2020 at the Technical
University of Denmark.
This course is aimed at PhD students and researchers in applied
mathematics and physics who want to understand and use UQ in
connection with inverse problems such as image deblurring, computed
tomography, and inverse scattering.
The course consists of lectures and exercises using MATLAB. The topics
are: a review of computational inverse problems, Bayesian methods and
UQ for inverse problems, prior modeling with Markov random fields, and
recently developed MCMC methods for UQ in inverse problems. The course
ends with a mini-project done by the course participants.
The course is given by Professor Johnathan M. Bardsley from the
University of Montana, and it uses the book: J. M. Bardsley,
Computational Methods and Uncertainty Quantification for Inverse

Scope and Interests: The technological trends in HPC system evolution
indicates an increasing burden placed on application developers due to
the management of the unprecedented complexity levels of hardware and
its associated performance characteristics. Many existing scientific
applications codes are unlikely to perform well on future systems
without major modifications or even complete rewrites. In the future,
it will be necessary to utilize, in concert, many characteristics such
as multiple levels of parallelism, many lightweight cores, complex
memory hierarchies, novel I/O technology, power capping, system-wide
temporal/spatial performance heterogeneity and reliability concerns.
The parallel and distributed computing community has developed new
programming models, algorithms, libraries and tools to meet these
challenges in order to accommodate productive code development and
effective system use. However, the scientific application community
still needs to identify the benefit through practical evaluations.
Thus, the focus of this workshop is on methodologies and experiences
used in scientific and engineering applications and algorithms to
achieve sustainable code development for better productivity,
application performance and reliability.

modeling, Approximation theory, Machine learning, Surrogates,
