This introductory textbook grew out of several courses in linear algebra
given over more than a decade and includes such helpful material as
constructive discussions about the motivation of fundamental concepts,
many worked-out problems in each chapter, and topics rarely covered in
typical linear algebra textbooks.
The authors use abstract notions and arguments to give the complete
proof of the Jordan canonical form and, more generally, the rational
canonical form of square matrices over fields. They also provide the notion
of tensor products of vector spaces and linear transformations. Matrices
are treated in depth, with coverage of the stability of matrix iterations, the
eigenvalue properties of linear transformations in inner product spaces,
singular value decomposition, and min-max characterizations of Hermitian

The mathematical challenges coming from the social and behavioral
sciences differ significantly from typical applied mathematical
concerns. "Change," for instance, is ubiquitous, but without knowing
the fundamental driving force, standard differential and iterative
methods are not appropriate. Although differing forms of aggregation
are widely used, a general mathematical assessment of potential
pitfalls is missing. These realities provide opportunities to create
new mathematical approaches.

edition of the West Texas Applied Math Graduate Minisymposium on
Saturday, April 14, 2018 in Lubbock, TX.
The minisymposium is addressed to all graduate students and post-docs
in the area of applied mathematics. It will be a one day event with
contributed talks of 25 minutes each plus 5 minutes for questions. A
poster presentation will take place during the lunch break. The day
after the event there will be a barbecue open to all participants.
The keynote speaker this year is Professor Mary F. Wheeler from the
University of Texas at Austin.

The focus area of this REU site is computational modeling to serve and
enhance the Portland metropolitan region as it grows and evolves. You
will be involved in a cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary research
project and trained in computational thinking across different
disciplines and communities. You will learn the fundamental skills of
computational modeling that will help you understand and solve complex
problems in a complex world. After a 2-week initial training, each
student will work on an 8-week research project completed in a
research lab under a mentor's guidance and with the involvement of a
community partner. At the end of the internship, you will present the
research outcomes to the community partner. Weekly site meetings,
seminars, site visits, and a final symposium will enrich the unique
internship and provide you with an intellectual toolbox that has the
potential to have a lasting impact on your career.

- Majoring in a STEM or related discipline.
- US citizens or permanent resident.

The NSF-CBMS conference on "Computational Methods in Optimal Control",
will be held at the Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi,
during July 23-27, 2018. The principal lecturer will be Dr. William
W. Hager from the University of Florida. Dr. Hager will deliver ten
lectures on state-of-the-art computational methods on optimal control
in the morning sessions, which are accompanied with lab sessions in
the afternoon. The lectures and labs are designed to provide both the
background needed to analyze convergence of discrete approximations
and solution techniques in optimal control, and practical experience
in solving real-world problems. Additional invited speakers will give
introductory talks that focus on computational methods for PDE optimal
control problems. The anticipated participants include faculty,
postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
This conference is supported by a grant from the National Science
Foundation (DMS-1743826). Limited travel support is available to
selected participants. Graduate students, recent PhDs, and members of
under-represented groups in mathematics and related disciplines are

The Chair of Economics, Discrete Optimization and Mathematics of the
Friedrich-Alexander-Universitat Erlangen-Nurnberg invites applications
for a PhD position in optimization to be filled for a period of three
years. The successful applicant will work in the project "Energy
efficiency via intelligent district heating networks" in cooperation
with the academic partners University Trier, TU Berlin, and Fraunhofer
Institute for Industrial Mathematics as well as the with the
industrial partner Technische Werke Ludwigshafen am Rhein AG. The
project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The focus of the project will be the development of models and
optimization techniques for coupled district heating networks. The
main idea is to develop algorithms for (discrete-)continuous
optimization that control the overall accuracy of the optimization
model by exploiting tailored error estimates. The successful applicant
will thus work at the interesting interface between optimization and
numerics. The developed algorithms will be analyzed theoretically and
need to be implemented in a programming language like C++ or Python.
We seek excellent open-minded and team-spirited PhD candidates that
should have completed their studies at master level in a program with
strong mathematical background in optimization.
