The authors have developed a methodology for control of nonlinear
systems in the presence of long delays, with large and rapid variation
in the actuation or sensing path, or in the presence of long delays
affecting the internal state of a system. In addition to control
synthesis, they introduce tools to quantify the performance and the
robustness properties of the designs provided in the book.

The book is based on the concept of predictor feedback and infinite-
dimensional backstepping transformation for linear systems and the
authors guide the reader from the basic ideas of the concept — with
constant delays only on the input — all the way through to nonlinear
systems with state-dependent delays on the input as well as on system
states.

It is intended for researchers working on control of delay systems,
including engineers, mathematicians, and students.

The project "Parallel Solutions of Linear Systems in Reservoir
Simulation", developed by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and
other Brazilian universities in collaboration with CENPES/Petrobras
(the R&D center of the Brazilian oil company), is seeking candidates
for a researcher position.

This is a four-year project focused on the design of efficient
parallel algorithms for the solution of linear systems arising from
Reservoir Simulation. Such algorithms must be suitable for a wide
variety of configurations, ranging from multicore desktops to
traditional clusters, GPU clusters, and Intel Xeon Phi
accelerators. These techniques will be incorporated into reservoir
simulators actually used in the petroleum industry.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in Computer Sciences,
Applied Math, Engineering, or a related field and be knowledgeable in
Computational Linear Algebra, Numerical Methods for PDEs,
Optimization, or associated subject. Former experience in the
implementation of numerical methods on parallel machines using
MPI/OpenMP, and C/C++ is required. Experience in CUDA/OpenCl and
scientific computing libraries (such as PETSc, Trilinos, MKL, etc.)
are a plus.

The candidate must have good communication skills, in writing as well
as in oral presentations, and the ability to collaborate with other
researchers and with students. He/she should also take initiative and
be able to work independently.

The candidate should be available to start the job by January 2014.

Biswa Nath Datta has been honored by the following recent publications
dedicated to him.

A special issue of the journal "Numerical Linear Algebra with
Applications" ( Vol. 20, 167-170, 2013) , has been dedicated to Biswa
Nath Datta. The issue contains 17 papers, which address a variety of
the theoretical issues, and applications, associated with inverse
problems. The publication recognizes Biswa Datta's many significant
contributions to linear algebra and control theory.

A research monograph entitled "Numerical Linear Algebra in Signals,
Systems and Control" ( Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering 80,
Springer, 2011), was dedicated to Biswa Nath Datta. It contains
contributions by some of the leading researchers in these areas which
included several invited talks delivered at the International workshop
under the same title held at the Indian Institute of Technology,
Kharagpur, India in 2007. Datta was honored at a banquet ceremony
organized by the local IEEE Chapter during the conference for "his
numerous contributions in the area of numerical linear algebra with
control and systems theory, and signal processing".

A special issue of the journal "Linear Algebra and its Applications"
(Volume 434, Issue 7, April, 2011) , was dedicated to Datta "in
recognition of his contributions to Linear Algebra, his enthusiasm for
linear algebra and its applications, and his efforts over the years to
bring together researchers in Linear Algebra with scientists and
engineers, who work on applications for which linear algebra is
essential". It was noted there that "Biswa Datta's enthusiasm for
Linear Algebra and its applications has been a source of inspiration
for many colleagues and students".
