Subject: Guri Marchuk (1925-2013)

A very sad news: on Sunday, 24 March 2013, Guri Ivanovich Marchuk died
at the age of 87 years. He was a prominent scientist with many
contributions to computational mathematics, geophysics, mathematical
models of atmosphere and ocean, climate, immunology and medcine. He
was the last President of the USSR Academy of Scinces (1986-1991).
Besides many activities and achievements in his very saturated life,
in 1962-1980 he was a director of the Computational Center of Syberian
Branch of the USSR Academy of Scinces and a foundator and first
director (1980-2000) of Institute of Numerical Mathematics of Russian
Academy of Scinces. He will stay in our hearts.

The newest journal from the Society for Industrial and Applied
Mathematics, SIAM/ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification (JUQ),
launched today with its first seven papers publishing online to Volume
1.

Offered jointly by SIAM and the American Statistical Association, the
journal publishes research articles presenting significant
mathematical, statistical, algorithmic, and application advances in
uncertainty quantification, and is dedicated to nurturing synergistic
interactions between these and related areas. Under the leadership of
Senior Editor Max Gunzburger, Editors-in-Chief James Berger and Donald
Estep and more than 35 others comprising the editorial board, the
journal will feature continuous electronic publication at SIAM
Journals Online with complimentary access in 2013.

The poster session will be held the first evening of the workshop
(July 22). All workshop participants are invited to submit a poster

mip2013@discovery.wisc.edu by April 15, 2013. Space for posters may be
limited, and the abstract will be used to decide which posters are

Modern High Performance Computing systems can be described by means of
a hierarchical multi-level structure: at the highest level there are
several systems connected among them by geographic networks; an
intermediate level is composed by the nodes in a single system
communicating among them by means of dedicated fast networks or high
performance switches; at the lowest level, finally, there are several
computing elements, computing cores as well as graphic accelerators,
sharing resources in a single node. These architecture levels have
very different features and they require different algorithmic
development methodologies and environments. For such a reason, the
development of algorithms and scientific software for these systems
implies a suitable combination of several methodologies to deal with
the different kinds of parallelism corresponding to each architectural
level.

This workshop focuses on all aspects related to development of hybrid
and hierarchical algorithms, able to be aware of the underlying
platform.

Applying grid-based methods to the many-body problem poses a number of
challenges in applied mathematics and theoretical physics. These are
for instance related to the choice of basis functions, the
representation of the grid, the approximations required to obtain
self-consistency, and the number of eigenspectrum problems that need
to be solved in the process. The main goal of this meeting is to bring
together scientists engaged in fundamental and applied aspects of
grid-based methods in quantum mechanics and/or in the analysis of
numerical methods of solving an associated large-scale eigenspectrum
problem. The session aims to consolidate the current state of the art
and discuss new developments from a range of disciplines that
contribute to this field of scientific research.

The key topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Numerical solutions to the linear/non-linear Schroedinger equation.
Self-consistency; Perturbation theory; Variational methods.
Grid-based many-body theory. Finite element and finite difference
analysis. Numerical methods for large-scale PDE eigenspectrum
problems. Applied modelling.

of mathematical basics as well as those involved in applied

The post-Doc is funded by the French ANR ISOTACE consortium which also
involves U. Orsay (B. Maury, F. Santambroggio) U. Paris 7
(Y. Achdou), Ecole Polytechnique (N. Touzi, Y. Brenier) and 2 small
companies.

Scientific description :

The post doc objective is to design and implement robust and efficient
numerical methods for a large class of variational problems including
the Gradient Flow formulation of Non linear diffusion PDEs (Granular
Flows Keller Segel equation ...), new modelizations of Economic
problems (Cournot-Nash Principal-Agent, Urban design ...).

These problems optimize a density which is mapped or matched to some
compatible data. The density displacement arises from the gradient of
a potential constrained to be convex. The convexity constraint makes
the connection with optimal transportation theory.

The discretization and implementation of the convexity constraint is a
challenging problem wich has recently received some attention
(Ekeland-Moreno Carlier-Maury-Lachand Robert Oberman ... ) The
candidate will first study/implement/compare existing methods. We will
then try to select or invent the most efficient approach for our
target problem.

The central task is to address numerically the problem of minimizing a
displacement convex functional (in the sense of McCann) with a
L2-Wasserstein penalization term. Taking advantage of the properties
of the variational problems in the space of displacement, the
candidate will study/implement gradient descent methods where the
optimization variable is the convexity constrained displacement
potential or gradient.

This position is strongly research oriented with plenty of
opportunities to explore connected problems. The candidate will
preferably have a previous experience on optimal transportation or
infinite dimensional optimization. Scientific programming experience
is necessary.
