Subject: Call for Submissions, SIAM Student Paper Prize

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - SIAM Student Paper Prize

The SIAM STUDENT PAPER PRIZE is awarded every year to the student
author(s) of the most outstanding paper(s) submitted to the SIAM
Student Paper Competition. This award is based solely on the merit
and content of the student's contribution to the submitted paper. The
prize recognizes outstanding scholarship by students in applied
mathematics or scientific computing. Up to three awards are given.

The SIAM Student Paper Prize will be awarded at the 2013 SIAM Annual
Meeting (AN13), to be held July 8-12, 2013, in San Diego, California.
Each prize recipient will receive a framed certificate plus a cash
award of $1,000. Each will have the opportunity to present his or her
paper at the meeting. Recipients will also receive gratis
registration for AN13 and a SIAM Student Travel Award toward travel
expenses.

Eligibility is restricted to students in good standing who do not yet
hold the degree of PhD on the application deadline. Papers entered in
the competition must have already been submitted for publication.
Submissions may be based on co-authored papers. Instructions on how
to submit a paper and other required documents can be found at
www.siam.org/prizes/nominations/nom_student.php.

All papers and accompanying documentation must be received at the SIAM
office on or before FEBRUARY 15, 2013. Please address your submission
to Professor Peter Turner, Chair, SIAM Student Paper Prize Committee,

Subject: SpanDeX.io for browser-based LaTeX authoring

If you or your students write LaTeX, you should look at
http://www.spandex.io. It is a browser-based LaTeX authoring
environment from some students from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. You write raw LaTeX code and see a PDF preview in
a few seconds. It offers style templates for some journals (limited
offering yet), version control, Dropbox integration, collaboration,
and access to your work from any browser. The product is not yet
mature, but it is improving.

I have no stake in the company; I'm just a happy user. Take a look;
you might be, too.

Saturday 27 April 2013, Cardiff University

The IMA Early Career Mathematicians' 2013 Spring Conference is set to
take place at the University of Cardiff on Saturday 27th April. The
event is designed to bring mathematicians together who are in the
early stages of their careers and who have different interests for a
fun-filled day of games and fascinating talks. With conferences being
described as "lively and informative", "a friendly and relaxed
atmosphere" and "educational, informative and entertaining" in
previous Mathematics Today publications it is no wonder the IMA Early
Career Mathematicians' Autumn Conference 2012 required multiple room
changes to keep up with the popular demand.

The Spring conference will include several talks including the use of
mathematics in video games and how mathematical models helped to
develop the UKs renowned SuperSonic car, Bloodhound. A detailed
schedule will be finalised in due course but the conference promises
to be just as fun and entertaining as previous events.

Subject: Gene Golub SIAM Summer School, China, Jul/Aug 2013

The fourth Gene Golub SIAM Summer School, with a focus on matrix
functions and matrix equations, will take place in Fudan University,
Shanghai, China, July 22 to August 2, 2013. It will also be the third
international Summer School on Numerical Linear Algebra and the tenth
Shanghai Summer School on Analysis and Numerics in Modern Sciences. An
extra week of activities from August 5 to August 9 is planned for
interested students.

The summer school will be composed of three mini-courses:

Functions of matrices and exponential integrators
Matrix equations and model reduction
High performance linear solvers and eigenvalue computations

Two positions as Postdoctoral Research Associates are open in the
group of Prof. Jan Hesthaven, Brown University.

The first position will focus on the analysis and development of
efficient algorithms for differential equations with fractional
operators. While the focus will be on the development of discontinuous
Galerkin methods for multi-dimensional fractional problems, other
related research directions are also possible.

The second position will focus on efficient multi-scale finite element
methods with an emphasis on methods and applications to wave
problems. We shall also consider the development of accurate and
efficient methods for weakly random materials and the use of reduced
basis methods to accelerate such techniques for heterogenous
multi-scale problems.

Both positions will entail a combination of analysis and computation,
possibly with direct ties to complex applications.

The initial appointment for both positions are for one year during
which the academic home will be Brown University. On mutual agreement,
a second year may be possible but may require relocation to EPFL,
Switzerland for the year. Extensions beyond the 2nd year will depend
on availability of additional funds.

Applicant should have a strong background in computational mathematics
and numerical analysis for PDE's and, preferably, a demonstrated
proficiency in advanced programming. A PhD in Applied Mathematics,
Mathematics, Computer Science or something closely related is
required.

The positions are available from June 1, 2013 or later based on mutual
agreement.

Evaluation of applications will begin on Januar 22, 2013 and continue
until the positions are filled.

The School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University
invites applications from candidates for a PhD studentship entitled "A
noisy flow model for uncertain wave dynamics in built-up vibroacoustic
systems"

Computer aided engineering (CAE) tools for predicting noise and
vibration are indispensable in many industries since they lead to huge
savings in cost and development time, and their results impact
comfort, safety, health and the environment. This proposal is to
initiate development of a software tool for predicting noise and
vibration levels in built-up structures (examples include cars, ships
and aircraft), where uncertainties in the manufacturing process and
the sheer scales involved render standard techniques unviable. The
work will be driven by problems in industry and underpinned by
rigorous mathematical foundations drawing from numerical analysis,
dynamical systems and operator theory. The project will be in
collaboration with the University of Nottingham and industrial
partners inuTech GmbH in Nuremberg, and Jaguar Land Rover. Visits to
both industrial partners will be expected during the project.

Candidates should hold a first class UK honours degree (or equivalent)
in mathematics, engineering or a related discipline. Alternatively, an
upper second class UK honours with a masters in an appropriate subject
area. Experience of mathematical programming using Matlab is
desirable.

Funding is for 3 years and will pay UK/EU fees and provide a
maintenance stipend linked to RCUK rate (currently £13, 590 per annum)
for up to 3 years. Additional funding to work at inuTech for 6 months
may also become available.

proofread the manuscript (spelling, grammar, intelligibility).

The manuscript is 204 pages long and is divided into three parts :
general presentation, applications, theory.

The first two are simple to read, but the last one is very technical
and involves high level probabilistic tools (stochastic processes,
entropy, and so on).

The successful candidate should have a very good level in
probabilities and should master the requirements for publishing books
or articles in English.

The expected duration for the work is 3 months and we offer a flat sum

Subject: Reliable Computing Journal, Updated BibTeX database

An updated cumulative BiBTeX database for the Reliable Computing
journal is now available. The updated database includes information
for all presently posted articles, including recently posted articles
in volumes 16 and volume 17. Additionally, we have corrected a few
small errors, and we have posted a PDF file containing the
LaTeX-formatted references generated from the database. Finally, as
of this update, the reference keys in the database conform to the
convention adopted in Nelson Beebe's BiBTeX databases
(e.g. "Achenie:2003:IGO", where "IGO" represents the first letters of
the first three words of the title).
