Subject: Leo Franca, 1959-2012
Leopoldo (Leo) Franca passed away last September 19, after a fatal
heart attack. Leo got his PhD at Stanford under the supervision of Tom
Hughes, in 1987. He then moved back to Brazil, his native country, to
work at the Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica (LNCC). A
few years latter, in 1993, he went back to the US, held a visiting
position at Purdue University and then joined the Math Department of
the University of Colorado at Denver. Upon returning to Brazil once
again, he held visiting positions at the Universidade Federal do Rio
de Janeiro at COPPE, and also LNCC, before joining IBM last year.
Leo was a highly cited author (having close to 4500 citations,
according to the Web of Science), and during his brilliant career he
had a major impact in the development and analysis of innovative
finite element methods. Leo was a life-fighter having undertaken a
liver transplant in 2004. He was a generous, polite and funny friend
who loved good food and travelling. He is survived by his wife Lucia
and his two daughters Louise and Lais. He will be dearly missed by his

We are glad to announce the Fourth Tetrahedron Workshop on Grid
Generation for Numerical Computations which will be held at the Hotel
"Il Chiostro" in Verbania, Italy, on 1-3 July 2013.
Goal of this Workshop is to overview the state of the art as well as
to present the most recent developments about mesh generation and
adaptation, with emphasis on applications to different fields of

Doctorate student position in numerical methods and HPC for PDEs
I would like to announce a doctorate student position in Mathematics
that is available at the Institut f\"ur Numerische Simulation in Bonn,
Germany. The goal is to create adaptive finite element
discretizations and efficient numerical solution methods for matter
transport problems. Such problems are motivated by real physical
systems, and typically require both adaptive mesh refinement and a
distributed-memory parallel implementation. The project has an
interdisciplinary component linking numerical mathematics, parallel
computing, and (geo-)physics applications.
A background in numerical methods and partial differential equations
is generally required, as well as experience in parallel programming
and the ability for algorithmic thinking. It will be important to
make connections between various disciplines, to acquire new knowledge
and numerical problem solving skills, and to learn to work on
collaborative software projects. A successful applicant will have the
opportunity to acquire hands-on experience on multiscale, fully
three-dimensional, time-dependent simulation scenarios. Salary will
