Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Arizona State University (see

lower division courses. The School offers a range of undergraduate
and graduate programs including pure mathematics, computational and
applied mathematics, mathematical biology, statistics, and mathematics

One PhD position is available within a project ''Global convergence
and adaptive finite element methods for solution of Coefficient
Inverse Problem (CIPs) for Maxwell equations `` at the Department of
Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology and
Gothenburg University, Sweden.

The aim of the project is the development, mathematical analysis and
implementation of reliable numerical methods for solution of CIPs for
Maxwell's system. Such CIPs have broad range of applications
including imaging of hidden explosives, geophysics, medical imaging,
etc. New developed methods will be tested on experimental data in
close collaboration with Optoelectronics Center at University of North
Carolina at Charlotte, Charlotte, USA, and Army Research Laboratory,
USA.

PhD position concerns development of the adaptive finite element
method in parallel infrastructure for the solution of the direct and
Coefficient Inverse Problems (CIPs) for Maxwell equations. The main
focus in the project will be on development of new versions of Hybrid
FEM/FDM method for solution of Maxwell equations in unbounded domains
and application of this method to solution of CIPs.

The new developed methods will be tested on experimental data using
time resolved backscattering electrical signal measured in the field
by the Forward Looking Radar. The research will be conducted in close
collaboration with Optoelectronics Center at University of North
Carolina at Charlotte, Charlotte, USA, and Army Research Laboratory,
USA.

The topic of this PhD degree is applied mathematics and thus it
provides a good grounding for pursuing a future academic research
career. There will be also a great demand for your skills in
industry. PhD position is limited to five years and will include
20% teaching duties.

Required qualifications

Candidate for PhD position should hold a M.Sc. degree (mathematics,
applied mathematics) in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Mechanical
Engineering Science or equivalent, awarded by an internationally
recognized university-level institution or documented equivalent
thereof. Candidate should have an interest in theoretical development
of new numerical methods for applied problems for PDE, experience in
scientific computing (object oriented C++ programming, Fortran,
Matlab, MPI, programming with PETSc, perl). Since the work involves
teaching, contact with industry, participation in international
conferences and writing of scientific papers, good communication
skills and knowledge of both written and spoken English are
prerequisites.
