Subject: New Q&A website for computational science

A new Stackexchange site that is focused on computational science
has just launched. It may be a nice place to discuss questions like
those that are often posted to NA-digest:

http://scicomp.stackexchange.com/

For those who are unfamiliar, Stackexchange is a network of
collaborative question and answer sites; the most well-known is the
stackoverflow site for programming.

Subject: New Book, Solving Numerical PDEs

Solving Numerical PDEs: Problems, Applications, Exercises by Luca
Formaggia, Fausto Saleri and Alessandro VenezianiSpringer, UNITEXT
Series, 434 p. ISBN 978-88-470-2411-3
This book aims at introducing students to the numerical
approximationof Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). One of the
difficulties ofthis subject is to identify the right trade-off between
theoreticalconcepts and their use in practice. With that collection of
examplesand exercises we try to address this issue by illustrating
"standard"examples which focus on basic concepts of Numerical
Analysis, as wellas problems derived from practical applications which
the student isencouraged to formalize in terms of PDEs, analyze and
solve. Thelatter examples are derived from the experience of the
authors inresearch project developed in collaboration with scientists
ofdifferent fields (biology, medicine, etc.) and industry. We
wantedthis book to be useful both to readers more interested in
thetheoretical aspects, and also to those more concerned with
thenumerical implementation. To this aim, solutions to the exercises
havebeen subdivided in three parts. The first concerns the
mathematicalanalysis of the problem, the second its numerical
approximation andthe third part is devoted to implementation aspects
and the analysisof the results. The book consists of three parts. The
first deals withbasic material and results provided as useful
reference for the othersections. In particular, we recall the basics
of functional analysisand the finite element method. The second part
deals with steadyelliptic problems, solved with finite elements or
finite differences, while in the third part we address time-dependent
problems, includinglinear hyperbolic systems and Navier-Stokes
equations. Two appendicesdiscuss some practical implementation issues
and three-dimensionalapplications. Each section contains a brief
introduction to thesubject to make this book self contained.
