Subject: Helmut Brass (1936-2011)

Dear NA-Digest readers,

With great sadness we report that Professor Helmut Brass passed away
on October 30, 2011, at the age of 75. After graduating at the
University of Hannover, he first held positions at the Universities of
Osnabrueck and Clausthal before he moved to TU Braunschweig where he
stayed for a quarter of a century until his retirement in 2002. During
this period he became one of the leading figures in the area of
numerical integration and approximation theory. In his research work,
his credo was always to look at the questions arising in this context
from an abstract point of view, in particular using known and
developing new methods of functional analytic nature. This concept
allowed him and his students to prove many general results whose
applications to concrete problems lead to very strong error bounds and
provided deep structural insight into important numerical methods. His
work has been published in two books, one of which was published just
a few weeks ago, and a great many journal publications. Helmut Brass
has also been influential in the mathematical community as an editor
of various leading research journals and an organizer of important
conferences, most prominently the numerical integration conferences in
Oberwolfach. As an academic teacher, he was very popular among his
students for his excellent lectures and his guidance and advice
concerning graduate theses. He will be greatly missed by all who knew
him.

Workshop on Large Scale Computational Physics (LSCP), organized in
conjunction with the International Conference on Computational Science
(ICCS) 2012 (see, http://www.iccs-meeting.org ), to take place in
Omaha, Nebraska, USA, June 4-6.

The workshop will focus on symbolic and numerical methods, algorithms
and tools for developing and running large-scale physics
computations. Special interest will go to scalability, parallelism and
high numerical precision. System architectures will also be presented
as long as they are actually supporting physics calculations,
including: massively parallel systems, GPU, many-cores, grid/cloud
computing. Topics will be chosen from areas including high energy
physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmology, quantum physics,

The project team Bipop has an open position for one year post doc.

Context: Within the BipOp team http://bipop.inrialpes.fr, the post
doctoral fellow will work on the project Saladyn
http://saladyn.gorge.inria.fr (French ANR project with Schneider
Electric, EDF, LMGC and LAMSID) concerning the simulation of
multi--body (rigid or flexible) dynamical systems with unilateral
contact and friction. This work will be carried out in close
collaboration with our partners at Schneider Electric.

The numerical simulation is of utmost importance for the design and
the validation of multi--body mechanical systems with unilateral
contact and friction. In this context, the bipop has developed a
software to simulation rigid multi-body systems with contact and
friction which is able to deal with 3D system and clearances in
joints. One of the crucial remaining question is the impact
propagation through the kinematic chains. Within the rigid body
assumption, only multiple impact laws can reproduce the wave
propagation and this can be done pretty well for discrete system as
granular media or chain of balls. In the case of continuum media, we
need to understand and to model the nonlinear mode propagation due to
the interaction of elasticity and contact.

The work will follow the following steps:
- Analyzing the existing approach (mainly developed in
Laxalde&Legrand(2011) to compute nonlinear modes with contact
- Propose alternative nonlinear modes descriptions in order to
integrate them in a simulation process
- Integration in the Siconos http://siconos.gforge.inria.fr. The
implementation and the validation of a OpenSource library aiming at
describing and simulating the multi--body dynamical systems.

integrate the Inria team SAGE, based in Rennes. The post-doctoral
researcher will also work in close collaboration with the INRIA teams
ESTIME and GAMMA3, based in Rocquencourt and with Geosciences Rennes.

The main objective of this post-doctoral position is to develop new
numerical methods adapted for the simulation of flow in porous
fractured media. The challenge is that water can flow in both the
matrix (the rock) and the fractures, with permeability spanning
several orders of magnitude and with a stochastic network of

Applications are invited for 4 graduate positions (3 MSc and 1 PhD) to
work on optimization and modelling.

One PhD position is available to work on the road optimization
problem. The research will involve the understanding, development and
numerical testing of new models for the road design problem. The ideal
applicant has a background in optimization (LP, MIP, NLP, etc.), some
programming experience in C++, and the ability to communicate
effectively (in English) with our industrial partner. The position is
fully funded and can start either in May 2012 or Sept 2012.

2 MSc positions are available in optimization and parallel
computing. The applicants should have either a solid background in
programming or optimization with a BSc degree in computer science or
mathematics. Funding is already in place for one position.

1 MSc position (subject to funding) is available in the field of
computational convex analysis. The applicant should have a background
in computer science (BSc) with interest in optimization or a
background in mathematics with programming skills.

You will join a dynamic group of researchers in optimization at the
University of British Columbia (Canada) on the fast growing campus of
Kelowna. The research team is interdisciplinary with faculty member
