Subject: Extended Survey, Freely Available Software, Linear Algebra
In emails with Jack Dongarra, the idea was suggested that the survey
of (essentially Fortran and C) open source linear algebra routines
could be enhanced with a companion page concerning open source tools
that wrap such programs and sometimes augment them. R
(www.r-project.org) I use regularly and have on occasion launched
Octave (www.gnu.org/octave) and SciLab. There are likely others (Sage?
Eigen?).
If there is interest in preparing a companion survey page to the one
reported (http://www.netlib.org/utk/people/JackDongarra/la-sw.html), I
would be happy to act as editor e.g., set up a wiki on my server to
gather material and try to organize it, but like most of us I have
familiarity with only some of the tools.
I envisage (at least) two-way use: to inform LA developers of uses of
their programs and to assist "wrapper" developers to improve their
software by incorporating improved routines and calling them
appropriately. Perhaps some overview of the sort already exists, but a
quick search did not reveal one.

Abstract: Practical problems in the earth sciences have a very large

will examine the challenges that arise in doing this successfully.

place in Elgersburg (Germany) from March 11 - 17, 2012.
The lecturers and their topics are

Mark Embree, "Pseudospectra and Nonnormal Dynamical Systems"
The school is addressed to postgraduate students or postdocs in
control, either in mathematics or engineering, and also to very good
undergraduates. We would be grateful if you could pass on this

The location has a capacity for 40 students. The cost for the hotel
including full board is EUR 510,- for a single and EUR 400,- for a
double room.
Due to the limited number of places there will be an application
procedure for participation at the school. Applicants are asked to
provide their CV and a letter of reference from their supervisor. The
deadline for applications is December 15, 2011. The organizers will
then rank the applications according to excellence and suitability.
Additionally, there are funds for travel support, accommodation and
subsistence for 15 participants.

The Householder Symposium XIX on Numerical Linear Algebra will be held
in Spa, Belgium, 8-13 June 2014.

This symposium is the nineteenth in a series, previously called the
Gatlinburg Symposia, and will be hosted by the Universite catholique
de Louvain and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
The Symposium is very informal, with the intermingling of young and
established researchers a priority. Participants are expected to
attend the entire meeting. The fifteenth Householder Award for the
best thesis in numerical linear algebra since 1 January 2011 will be
presented.
Attendance at the meeting is by invitation only. Applications will be
solicited from researchers in numerical linear algebra, matrix theory,
and related areas such as optimization, differential equations, signal
processing, and control. Each attendee will be given the opportunity
to present a talk or a poster. Some talks will be plenary lectures,
while others will be shorter presentations arranged in parallel
sessions.
The application deadline will be some time in Fall 2013. It is
expected that partial support will be available for some students,
early career participants, and participants from countries with
limited resources.
The Householder Symposium takes place in cooperation with the Society
for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the SIAM Activity
Group on Linear Algebra.
