Subject: John Butcher wins inaugural Jones Medal
Emeritus Professor John Butcher from The University of Auckland
was recently awarded the inaugural Jones Medal for lifetime
achievement in mathematical sciences. This medal has been
established in honour of Sir Vaughan Jones, one of John's former
undergraduate students in Auckland and the only New Zealander to
receive a Fields Medal.
John has done exceptional work on numerical methods for the
solution of ordinary differential equations, and has also been a
leader in the development of New Zealand mathematical sciences.
Perhaps most notably in 1972 he discovered an important
mathematical structure, now named the Butcher group, a full 26
years before it was rediscovered by Dirk Kreimer and (Fields
Medalist) Alain Connes in the guise of the Hopf Algebra of rooted
trees. This algebra has important applications in geometry and
theoretical physics.
At 77 years of age, John is one of the oldest mathematicians
still active in New Zealand. He "retired", as was compulsory at
the time, in 1999, but says that the period since then has been
one of the most productive in his research career. He has gone on
to publish more than 40 of the 150 or so scientific papers which,
along with three books, make up his extensive list of
publications. He maintains national and international research
collaborations and has continued to teach and take on new
postgraduate students.

The Fifteenth Leslie Fox Prize meeting will take place on Monday
June 27th 2011, in the Manchester Institute for Mathematical
Sciences at The University of Manchester.
Entries for the Fifteenth Leslie Fox Prize competition should be
submitted by January 31, 2011. Any person who is less than 31
years old on January 1st, 2011 and has not already won a first
prize is eligible. Each entry should consist of a paper,
describing some of the candidate's research, that is suitable for
a 40 minute lecture at a numerical analysis meeting.

Subject: Call for Donations, 15th Leslie Fox Prize in NA
The Leslie Fox Prize is a prestigious international prize in
numerical analysis, awarded based on a submitted paper and a
lecture. The Prize was set up in 1985 to honour Professor Leslie
Fox, who founded the Oxford University Computing Laboratory in
1957 and was the Professor of Numerical Analysis at Oxford from
1963 to 1983.
The Prize is financially underwritten by the Institute of
Mathematics and its Applications (IMA, http://www.ima.org.uk) and
administered by the Board of the IMA Journal of Numerical
Analysis who appoint the Adjudicating Committee. The organization
of each meeting from the call for entries, choice of date and
venue, and the adjudication of the prize, is in the hands of the
Adjudicating Committee.
The funding for the prize has been obtained by private donations
but the interest from the prize fund, particularly with current
rates, comes nowhere near covering the cost of the prizes, even
though these are far lower than appropriate for such a
significant honour. In view of the close relationship of the
Prize to IMAJNA, the IMA has agreed to underwrite the Prize but
it is still important to build the fund to a self-sustaining
level.

A candidate with a primary background in computer science is also

with solving dense and/or sparse systems of linear equations
and/or eigenvalue problems.
A candidate with a primary background in numerical mathematics is
also expected to have a solid background in fundamental areas of
computer science including: computer architecture, languages and
compilers, data structures and algorithms, software engineering,
and autotuning.
Excellent communication skills are essential. Team spirit is
mandatory. A willingness to participate in a highly diverse,
multi-disciplinary environment is also essential. Generally the
Ph.D. degree is expected, but an M.S. with 3 to 5 years of

Under the project ECOSEA (Estimation, COntrole et Stabilisation

of aerodynamic shear flows) funded by the Fondation de Recherche
pour l'Aeronautique et l'Espace (FRAE; Foundation for Aerospace
Research) we can offer a one-year postdoctoral position shared
between ONERA-DAFE (D=E9partement d'A=E9rodynamique Fondamental et
Exp=E9rimental) and the Laboratoire d'Hydrodynamique (LadHyX) at
the Ecole Polytechnique.
The project is concerned with the design and implementation of
algorithms for the reduced description of the input-output
behavior of flow models arising in aeronautical
applications. Special emphasis will be directed towards (i)
adaptive multi-point Krylov techniques for the efficient
extraction of transfer functions directly from numerical
simulations, and (ii) the development and application of the
Discrete Empirical Interpolation Method for the reduction of
nonlinear fluid systems.
The candidate will be part of a research group on flow control
and model reduction jointly headed by Denis Sipp (ONERA/DAFE) and
Peter Schmid (LadHyX) and is expected to interact and actively
participate in the research activities of the group. Knowledge
and previous exposure to concepts of flow control and model
reduction are desirable, but any candidate with an appropriate
background will be given due consideration.
