Subject: libflame 5.0 now available

We are happy to announce the fifth milestone release (r4648) of
libflame, a modern replacement for the most-used functionality of
the LAPACK linear algebra library.

The main improvement since version 4.0 is that libflame now
supports parallel execution using multiple GPUs through the
SuperMatrix runtime system. By linking libflame with CUBLAS for
the execution of BLAS routines on a single GPU, the SuperMatrix
runtime system schedules operations to each GPU and manages the
explicit movement of data. This release includes support for
single and double precision real and complex floating point
operations. A comprehensive table of dense linear algebra
operations supported within libflame along with the ones with GPU
support may be found at [1].

An in-depth description of the effort required to support
parallel execution using multiple GPUs and a first introduction
to libflame, as well as a comprehensive user's guide, may be
found at [2]. For general information, including links to source
code distributions, please visit the FLAME project home page at [3].

Subject: Call for Householder Award Nominations, Feb 1 2011

The Alston S. Householder Award is given every three years for
the best PhD dissertation in numerical linear algebra. It is
presented at the triennial Householder Symposium on Numerical
Linear Algebra, which will be held on June 12-17, 2011. We
solicit nominations of dissertations by the candidate's PhD
advisor. To be eligible, the dissertation must have been
submitted between Jan 1, 2008 and Dec 31, 2010.

The deadline for submission is Feb 1, 2011.

Details, including submission instructions and a list of prior
winners, may be found at https://outreach.scidac.gov/HH11/index.html

The term numerical linear algebra is intended to describe those
parts of mathematical research that have both linear algebraic
aspects and numerical content or implications. Thus, for example,
a dissertation concerned with the numerical solution of
differential equations, optimization problems, signal processing,
or control problems would be eligible if linear algebra is
central to the research contribution.

Entries will be assessed by an international committee consisting
of Michele Benzi (Emory U.), James Demmel (UC Berkeley, Chair),
Howard Elman (U. Maryland), Volker Mehrmann (TU Berlin),
Sabine Van Huffel (Catholic U. Leuven) and
Stephen Vavasis (U. Waterloo).

Regards,
James Demmel, UC Berkeley
Chair of the Householder Award Committee

learning. Experience with multilevel techniques, or large-scale
and integer optimization is a plus. Candidates should submit an
application via the Argonne website under division postdoctoral
job openings for job requisition MCS-316992. For further
information about postdoc appointments at Argonne, see

Subject: Ph.D. Studentship in Comp Modeling at NC A&T State Univ

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT at North Carolina A&T State University
International applications are welcome.

Applications are invited for a four-year Ph.D. studentship in
the area of computational atmospheric chemical transport
modeling.

Numerical modeling of chemical transport in the Earth
atmosphere is of major importance for atmospheric chemistry
research. It plays an essential role in addressing issues of
air quality, aerosol formation and evolution, acid formation,
and global budgets of greenhouse gases. The computational
challenge of modeling atmospheric chemical transport is
enormous since the system of governing equations is extremely
stiff, nonlinear and involves a large number of chemically
interacting species.

RESPONSIBILITIES: We are seeking a Ph.D. student for NSF funded
research project to develop and apply multi-scale Adaptive Mesh
Refinement numerical methods for atmospheric chemical transport
modeling. The work is computational and theoretical in nature
but with important implications for atmospheric chemical
transport modeling.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a Bachelor/Master Degree
either in Applied Mathematics, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics or
Engineering or other relevant field. Previous experience with
Atmospheric sciences and Atmospheric Chemistry will be a plus,
though is not required. The candidate should be highly
motivated, goal oriented. Experience in CFD modeling, solid
background in numerical methods and programming skills in
fortran90 are essential. Preference will be given to those who
have previous experience in computer programming and algorithm
development and application related to computational
physics/fluid dynamics.

Electronic applications are preferable.
Interested Individuals should send applications containing
cover letter, CV (which includes list of publications if any),
the names and contact details of at least three referees.
