Subject: Call for Nominations - Two SIAG/Geosciences Prizes

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

SIAG/Geosciences Career Prize & Junior Scientist Prize

The SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences (SIAG/GS) will award two prizes at
the SIAM Conference on Mathematical and Computational Issues in the
Geosciences (GS11), to be held March 21-24, 2011, in Long Beach, California.

The SIAG/GS Career Prize will be awarded to an outstanding senior
researcher
who has made broad and distinguished contributions to the field of
geosciences. The award may be given to any scientist who has held a PhD or
equivalent degree for at least 15 years.

The SIAG/GS Junior Scientist Prize will be awarded to an outstanding junior
researcher in the field of geosciences for distinguished contributions to
the field in the three calendar years prior to the year of the award. At
least one of the papers containing this work must be published in
English in
a peer-reviewed journal bearing a publication date in the calendar years
2008-2010. The recipient must be a graduate student or the paper's
publication date must be no more than three calendar years later than the
year in which the author received the PhD or equivalent degree.

For each prize, the award will consist of a plaque and a certificate
containing the award citation. For each, the recipient will be invited to
present a plenary talk at the conference. And the recipients will be
reimbursed for travel expenses to attend the meeting to accept the award
and
to give the talk.

Nominations should be addressed to Dr. Jean Roberts, Chair, SIAG/GS Prize
Committee and sent by November 1, 2010, to J. M. Littleton at

Project:

DNOISE is a 5-year NSERC and industry-funded project for research in
seismic data acquisition, processing, and imaging. Our
interdisciplinary approach builds on recent developments in
compressive sensing, large-scale optimization, and full-waveform
inversion from severely sub-sampled data. The project includes 10
graduate students, 3 postdocs, and a research associate. The
postdoctoral positions, under the supervision of Felix J. Herrmann
(Earth and Ocean Sciences), Michael P. Friedlander (Computer Science),

Description:

The aim of the DNOISE project is to design the next generation of
seismic imaging technology to address fundamental issues related to
the quality and cost of seismic data acquisition, the ability to
invert exceedingly large data volumes, and the capacity to mitigate
non-uniqueness of full-waveform inversion.

You will be part of a dynamic interdisciplinary research group and
will present your research at international conferences and to
industry. You will also be involved in industry collaborations that
include internships and projects on real field data. You will have
extensive contact with graduate students, fellow postdocs, and
faculty. We seek excellence in any of a wide variety of areas,
spanning theory, algorithm design, and concrete software
implementations applied to field data. SLIM has state-of-the-art
resources, including a 288 CPU cluster, Parallel Matlab, and seismic
data-processing software.

Successful candidates will have a PhD degree obtained in 2008 or later
in geophysics, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering,
or a related field, with a strong achievement record in at least one
of the following areas: seismic imaging, inverse problems,
PDE-constrained optimization, direct/indirect Helmholtz solvers,
signal processing, sparse approximation and compressed sensing, convex
optimization, and stochastic optimization. Earlier PhDs will be
considered where the research career has been interrupted by
circumstances such as parental responsibilities or illness. UBC hires

Research areas:

Compressive seismic-data acquisition: Development of practical seismic

Doctoral student in Fluid Mechanics/High-Performance Computing

The applicant should have an MSc degree in either Computer Science (focus on

The project is concerned with large-scale simulations of particle-laden
turbulent flows in moderately complex geometries. A large part of the work
is related to efficient implementation and parallelisation of Lagrangian
particle tracking and related aspects into a massively-parallel code.
The PhD position will be located at KTH Mechanics, Stockholm, Sweden. It
will be part of the newly established Swedish e-Science Research Centre
(SeRC), in particular the Flow e-Science Community. Therefore, a broad
collaboration between the various partners, including application experts at
the two computer centres PDC and NSC, and the colleagues from Numerical
Analysis, is envisaged. Also, the Linné FLOW Centre has a comparably large
activity in multiphase flows, including several PhD projects and Postdocs.

A thorough knowledge and interest in large-scale numerical simualtions and
computer implementations for parallel architectures as well as physical
interest in fluid mechanics is a plus. The applicant should have good
control of English both written and spoken.
