Subject: Response to " What is the definition of "condition number"?"

There is an excellent article published by Prof. Werner Rheinboldt in
1976 which extends the concept of condition number to nonlinear
equations. He defines condition numbers for nonlinear functions on a
specific domain. He also shows that when the domain shrinks to a
point, then the condition number of the function coincides with the
Jacobian matrix at that point.

While object-oriented programming has been embraced in industry,
particularly in the form of C++, Java, and Python, its acceptance by
the parallel scientific programming community has been relatively
slow. Nonetheless, various factors practically dictate the use of
language features that provide higher level abstractions than do C or
older FORTRAN standards. These include increasingly complex physics
models, numerical algorithms, and hardware, e.g. deep memory
hierarchies, ever-increasing numbers of processors, the advent of
multi-core processors; more recently the use of heterogeneous
architectures using the IBM Cell/BE or GP-GPUs, and soon the
experimentation with many-core processors.

This workshop seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners in
this growing and evolving field to `compare notes' on their work. The
emphasis is on how object-oriented programming can benefit scientific
computing specifically: new or novel frameworks, approaches,
techniques, or idioms that use object orientation. Multi-paradigmatic
approaches are also of definite interest. Presentations of work in
progress are welcome.

The Faculty of Engineering is seeking applications from suitably
qualified candidates for the post of a non-tenured professor ad
interim ("Lehrstuhlvertreter", at the W3 level) in the area of
Microsystem Simulation, for the duration of 3 years starting in
October 2010.

The successful candidate will be expected to hold lectures in English
and in German for Microsystems Engineering students at the B.Sc. and
M.Sc. levels on the following subjects: Technical Mechanics
(electrodynamics of MEMS), Simulation (finite element theory), Model
order reduction (compact modelling), and Topology
optimization. Experience in teaching Engineering Design will be of
advantage, as will experience in supervising Bachelor and Master
theses. Applicants should hold a PhD in Engineering or Physics, and
should either hold a habilitation degree or demonstrate equivalent
experience.

The University of Freiburg aims to increase the number of women

AT THE CIRM (FONDAZIONE BRUNO KESSLER) IN TRENTO 2010-2011

In the course of the year 2007 the Istituto Trentino di Cultura was
transformed into a Foundation, the 'Fondazione Bruno Kessler'. The
CIRM (Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca Matematica), through its
new Comitato Direttivo, formed by:

Fabrizio Catanese (Bayreuth University), Director,
Luigi Ambrosio (Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa),
Marco Andreatta (Trento University),
Fritz Grunewald (Duesseldorf University),
Alberto Valli (Trento University),
Don Zagier (Max Planck Institut, Bonn and College de France, Paris),

took this transformation as an occasion to expand the spectrum of the CIRM
activities, held since many years in collaboration with the University of
Trento.

Next to the traditional activity, which has seen the CIRM organize more
than 210 mathematical Meetings and Conferences in the period 1979-2007, and
the related editorial activity, which has seen the publication of more than
50 research books and journal volumes, the Comitato Direttivo set up a new
range of activities, especially four types of visiting positions with the
intention of stimulating the interaction between the mathematical research
community of the Trento area and the European and international mathematical
community.

The hope is that this new and important initiative may in the future
bring
the Trento CIRM to be in line with other European Mathematical Research
Centres.

One of the targeted purposes is to have foreign visitors spending part of
their sabbatical at the CIRM, bringing new experiences and exciting new
developments in contact with the mathematical environment of the Trento
area. These visitors will receive a more than full reimbursement (see below)
of the expenses connected with their stay in Trento.

It is moreover agreed upon that the support of younger researchers is one
of the vital functions of a research centre. In this direction, the CIRM
opens the application for two Postdoc Positions.

I) Postdoc Fellowships

The CIRM offers two annual Postdoc Fellowships for researches in the
field
of Mathematics in the year 2010-2011. Each fellowship amounts to Euro 23500
gross per year (taxes should be deducted), which will be pro-rated in 12
monthly installments, and requires the presence in the CIRM Institute
(address Via Sommarive 14, Povo, Trento).

The applications must arrive not later than September 10th, 2010 at the
address Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca
Matematica, Via Sommarive n. 14 - Povo, 38123 Trento by ordinary mail or via
electronic mail to the address micheletti@fbk.eu.

The Comitato Direttivo of CIRM will make a selection of winner
applicants,
ranking them in consecutive order. On the basis of this list of selected
candidates, the CIRM will make offers to award the fellowships (as
"contratto di collaborazione coordinata e continuativa a progetto").

These fellowships are incompatible with other full-time employment or
with similar fellowships.

Winners must communicate their acceptance of the fellowship within 15
days
from the time of receipt of the communication of CIRM. If one of the chosen
candidates turns down the offer, the CIRM will proceed to make an offer to
the next candidate on the list.

The activities connected with the new enrollment, except for particular
requirements to be agreed upon with the winners, will start preferably on
November 2nd, but possibly also before or after, in any case before November
30th, 2010.

Applications for Postdoctoral Fellowships may also be submitted
before the
official awarding of the Ph.D. title (or equivalent), but under a solid
guarantee that the title will be awarded before the last deadline (November
30th, 2010). In any case the title should have been awarded before the
beginning of the activity at the CIRM.

Applicants must send by ordinary mail, or possibly by electronic mail to
the address micheletti@fbk.eu , the following documents:

1. A curriculum vitae including surname, first name and postal address
(e-mail address too) chosen to correspond with CIRM, together with three
recommendation letters.

2. A detailed Research Program with explicit reference to either a
Professor of Trento University, or a

member of the Comitato Direttivo of CIRM. The applicant's program must be
related to the Research Group of the Host Professor.

3. A list of publications.

4. Copies (possibly, electronic files) of recent articles and preprints.

5. A copy (possibly, electronic file) of the Doctoral Thesis; in case of
submission of a preliminary version

a statement by the Ph.D. advisor should be attached.

The Comitato Direttivo of CIRM will make a selection of winner
applicants,
ranking them in consecutive order, and with a preference for Research
Programs connected to the research activity at CIRM and at the Università di
Trento. It is expected that the results of the selection process will be
communicated to the applicants within October 5th, 2010.

If one of the chosen candidates has not yet been awarded the Ph.D. title
within the date agreed upon for commencing the activity at the CIRM, the
Comitato Direttivo will proceed to make an offer to the next candidate on
the list.

The fellows will have access, free of charge, at the FBK Cafeteria in
Povo.

CIRM will provide the necessary logistic support: office space and
computer facilities, access to the library and to other facilities of the
Department of Mathematics of the Università di Trento and of the Fondazione
Bruno Kessler.


II) CIRM Visiting Professors and CIRM Visiting Scholars

CIRM Visiting Scholars will perform mathematical research in cooperation
with scientists and researchers of Trento University or, more generally, of
the Trento area, holding some research seminars; CIRM Visiting Professors
will hold short Ph.D. courses, or 'Summer Courses', or series of seminars.

It is foreseen that the selection process for Visiting
Professors-Scholars
take place through either

i) individual application, or

ii) invitation by a professor of Trento University or by a member of the
Comitato Direttivo.

In both cases, as a rule, the applications-proposals must be motivated on
the basis of cooperation or synergy with Mathematicians belonging to
Institutions which are related with Trento. Applications must be sent to the
address FBK, Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca Matematica, Via Sommarive
n. 14-Povo, 38123 Trento, Italy by ordinary mail or via electronic mail to
the address micheletti@fbk.eu. Applications must also contain a specific
indication of the proposed dates for the visit (usually:

between 15 days and three months); it is possible to enclose recommendation
letters.

Applications and proposals may be sent at any time. However, it is
recommended to submit them sufficiently ahead of time, since they will be
usually examined three times every year.

Three levels of remuneration are foreseen, according to the corresponding
career level and the period of staying at CIRM.

All levels include a full coverage of expenses, preferably by direct
payment by the FBK-CIRM administration, travel reimbousement, and a
honorarium (subject to taxation), up to a maximum of:

Level I) Euro 3000, all inclusive, per month.

Level II) Euro 3500, all inclusive, per month.

Level III) Euro 4000, all inclusive, per month.

CIRM will provide the necessary logistic support: office space and
computer facilities, access to the library and to other facilities of the
Dipartimento di Matematica della Università di Trento, and of the Fondazione
Bruno Kessler (such as FBK Cafeteria).

III) Research in Pairs

This type of program is similar to the one of the Mathematisches
Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, and provides for the presence of two or
three partners from Universities located in different towns, who intend to
work on a definite research project and for a well specified period of time
(ranging from one to six weeks).

Applicant partners must submit a scientific project in the field of
mathematics, with a detailed research program, resulting in one or more
scientific publications in journals of excellent mathematical level; the
support of the CIRM will then be acknowledged in the resulting publications.

Participants in the RIP Program will also give occasional research
seminar
talks at the CIRM or at the University of Trento, but will enjoy freedom in
the pursuit of their scientific goals.

Applications where one or more of the partners are Italians will of
course
be welcome.

CIRM will provide the necessary logistic support: office space and computer
facilities, access to the library and to other facilities of the
Dipartimento di Matematica della Università di Trento, and of the Fondazione
Bruno Kessler (such as FBK Cafeteria).

Participants in the RIP Program will have their living expenses (full
board and lodging) fully paid by CIRM and will possibly get an insurance
covering their activity inside the CIRM offices. As a rule, travel expenses
will not be reimbursed, except in exceptional cases.

Post-Doc in Computational Fluid Dynamics

Carleton University (Ottawa), Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal (Montreal),
General Fusion (Vancouver)

Title: Hydrodynamics simulations for Magnetized Target Fusion based nuclear
reactor

It is largely recognized by the scientific and political community that
controlled nuclear fusion is the best long-term means of meeting mankind's
growing need for a clean, renewable and inexpensive energy source. The two
main kinds of nuclear fusion devices are based on Magnetic Confinement
Fusion
(MCF), like the Tokamak design, and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF), like
the NIF design using intense lasers. An improved understanding of plasma
physics over the last 20 years and the huge technical difficulties in
designing MCF and ICF reactors, has re-awoken the interest in several
alternative reactor designs, in particular in those that capitalize on the
increased stability of Field Reversed Configurations (FRC) with increased
currents. In this vein, General Fusion, a company from Vancouver, has
embarked
since 2002 on a project of implementing a device based on Magnetic Target
Fusion (MTF) first proposed in the 80s by researchers at the US Naval
Weapons
Research Lab. This approach is an intermediate approach between MCF (low
plasma density, very strong magnetic fields, large confinement times)
and ICF
(high plasma density, very intense lasers, short confinement times).

The Post-Doc general objectives will be to numerically validate the chosen
physical models of some essential physics within General Fusion's device
thereby i) providing numerical proof-of-concept ii) reducing operating
uncertainties and iii) optimizing reactor design. Specialized numerical
codes,
often classified, exist for the simulation of specific reactor designs
(MCF or
ICF) but not for MTF. The Post-Doc will then adapt existing High-Performance
codes for Hydrodynamics, namely Frontier
[http://frontier.ams.sunysb.edu/news/news.php ], in order to address
important
questions about plasma instabilities during compression, Lawson's criterion,
vortex collapses. Details on General Fusion's reactor can be found on

Keywords: Hydrodynamics, Bifluid Flows, FronTier, Front-Tracking,
Rayleigh-Taylor Instabilities, High Performance Computing.

Requirements: A PhD in one of the following areas is required: Applied
Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. Applicants
should
have a strong background in Scientific Computing ideally applied to Fluid
Dynamics.

Supervision: This position will be funded by MITACS and General Fusion and
will part of a MITACS Cluster project. It will be co-supervised by Marc
Laforest (Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal), Emmanuel Lorin (Carleton
University), and Frederic Sirois (Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal). The
student could be registered at Carleton University or Ecole Polytechnique de
Montreal. Frequent visits in Vancouver are expected.

Starting date: July 2010

Salary: $36,000 per year.
