Subject: Corrections from recent issues of NA Digest

Some recent issues have had incorrect volumes and numbers:

* Monday, May 31, 2010 should be Volume 10, Issue 22
* Monday, June 21, 2010 should be Volume 10, Issue 23
* Monday, June 21, 2010 should be Volume 10, Issue 25

Also, last week's issue contained the subject:

OPTEC Workshop on Large-Scale Quadratic Programming, Netherlands, Nov 2010

which should have been:

OPTEC Workshop on Large-Scale Quadratic Programming, Belgium, Nov 2010

These mistakes have been corrected in the archive.

Subject: What is the definition of "condition number"?

Hello NA Digest,

What is the general definition of the "condition number" of a
numerical analysis problem? (Maybe I should have said "condition
numbers".) This might seem to be a silly question until you look in
your favorite numerical linear algebra textbooks and discover that few
if any have an index entry for "condition number, definition". My
question is, what should be the text to go with that index entry?

Subject: New book, Modeling, Simulation, & Optimization of Supply Chains

Announcing the June 17 publication by SIAM of

Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization of Supply Chains: A Continuous
Approach, by Ciro D'Apice, Simone Göttlich, Michael Herty, and Benedetto
Piccoli

June 2010 / xx + 206 pages / Softcover / ISBN 978-0-898717-00-6 / List
Price
$69.00 / SIAM Member Price $48.30 / Order Code OT121

This book offers a state-of-the-art introduction to the mathematical theory
of supply chain networks, focusing on supply chain networks described by
partial differential equations (PDEs). The authors discuss modeling of
complex supply networks as well as their mathematical theory;
explore modeling, simulation, and optimization of some of the discussed
models; and present analytical and numerical results on optimization
problems. Real-world examples are given to demonstrate the applicability of
the presented approaches.

Graduate students and researchers who are interested in the theory of
supply
chain networks described by PDEs will find this book useful. It can also be
used in advanced graduate-level courses on modeling of physical phenomena,
as well as introductory courses on supply chain theory.

Subject: Workshop 'Immersed boundaries', CIRM, Marseille, Aug 2010

Dear Colleague,

Please find below the announcement for the International Workshop on

"Immersed boundaries and fictitious domain methods:
theory and applications"

which is to be held at the CIRM in Marseille, France
from August 30 - September 3, 2010.

The CIRM (Centre International de Rencontres Mathematiques) is a very
beautiful place just above the famous Calanques of Marseille, on the
Mediterranean sea coast. For more details you can consult the web site:
http://www.cirm.univ-mrs.fr.

The numerical simulation of many problems (fluid flow, etc.) in complex
geometries is one of the main challenges in scientific computing. A crucial
point plays hereby the grid generation, especially in 3-D, for solving the
underlying PDEs. Many industrial applications are dealing with such complex
problems, in particular for the design and optimization, especially in the
unsteady regime. Numerous examples can be found, like blood flow,
fluid-structure interaction, interaction of waves with obstacles, free
boundary value problems, multiphase flows, etc.

The conference will be devoted to all the aspects: theory, numerics and
applications of these methods including: Immersed Boundary Methods (IBM),
diffuse interface methods (with regularized Dirac measures), L2 or H1
penalty
methods, Sub-Mesh Penalty (SMP) methods, Lagrange multiplier methods,
Immersed
Interface Methods, Cartesian-grid or Cut-cell methods, Ghost-fluid
methods...

The aim of the workshop is to bring together applied mathematicians (in the
field of mathematical analysis of PDEs, numerical analysis and scientific
computing) and researchers in several applied domains, like biology, fluid
dynamics, mechanics, plasma physics, electromagnetism, life sciences,
environmental sciences, etc.

For registration, please contact the organizers by email

ibfdm_cirm2010@cmi.univ-mrs.fr

before July 15th 2010. Please also indicate if you would like to give a
contributed talk or present a poster, if so, please submit a short abstract.

The attendance is limited to 60 people and the participation of postdocs
and PhD students is strongly encouraged.

Yours Sincerely,

Philippe Angot, Olivier Gues & Kai Schneider
