Subject: Dongarra and Madduri Win First SIAM SIAG/SC Prizes

The SIAM Activity Group on Supercomputing (SIAG/SC) awarded Jack
Dongarra and Kamesh Madduri the 2010 Career and Junior Scientist
Prizes in Supercomputing, respectively, at the SIAM Conference on
Parallel Processing for Scientific Computing. These are the first of
what are biennial awards given by SIAG/SC.

Jack Dongarra received his award “for his many contributions to high
performance computing, especially the development of dense linear
algebra libraries and standardized benchmarks, and leadership in the
HPC community.” Kamesh Madduri received his award “for his important
contributions to combinatorial scientific computing, designing
high-performance, multithreaded algorithms for analyzing large-scale
complex networks from applications in genomics, social network
analysis and security.”

Congratulations to Jack and Kamesh.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - Peter Henrici Prize

The Peter Henrici Prize is awarded every four years jointly by ETHZ and
SIAM
for original contributions to applied analysis and numerical analysis
and/or
for exposition appropriate for applied mathematics and scientific
computing.
The award is intended to recognize broad and extended contributions to
these
subjects, more than a single outstanding work.

The Henrici Prize will be awarded at ICIAM 2011 to be held July 18-22,
2011,
in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The award will include a
certificate
containing the citation, a cash award of $5000, and an invitation to
present
a lecture at the meeting. Reasonable travel expenses for attendance at the
meeting will also be reimbursed.

opportunity to explore exciting new approaches in HPC algorithms,

OCCAM has
been established with substantial funding from the King Abdullah
University of
Science and Technology (KAUST) Global Research Partnership (GRP). The
Centre,
which is part of the Mathematical Institute, is allied to a global
network of
mathematicians and it has a symbiotic relationship with other scientific

Mathematics and
Computer Science, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, (last
year). The position is funded by the Initial Training Network FIRST ("Fronts
and Interfaces in Science and Technology") of the EU.

Colloidal particles play an important role in technological and biological
processes.
A main issue which influences the colloidal dynamics within a porous medium,
e.g., the soil, is the process of flocculation. Its accurate description in
the context of advection-diffusion-reaction equations is not only of great
impact since the microstructure of the porous medium depends on the
attachment
of flocculated particle clusters but also because contaminant transport is
dictated by colloidal particles.
In the project a mathematical model should be set up rigorously which
describes the above mentioned phenomena. We expect multiscale problems to
emerge possibly connecting continuum and discrete scales. Special attention
should also be paid to the numerical realization within the framework of an
existing software.

We are looking for a candidate who has a strong affinity for at least one of
the following fields:
- analysis of PDEs
- numerics of PDEs
- mathematical modelling
