Subject: Celebrating Eugene Isaacson and Herbert Keller, Courant, Dec 2009

On Friday December 4, 2009 the Courant Institute will host

"A Day to Celebrate the Lives and Work of Eugene Issacson and Herbert Keller".

Former colleagues, students, and family will speak and the event will end with
a reception in the Courant Institute's 13th floor lounge.

Eugene Isaacson received his doctoral degree from our institute,
with Kurt-Otto Friedrichs, in 1949 and remained with us as a
faculty member and an active presence in his retirement.
Herbert Keller received his doctorate from our institute, working
with Wilhelm Magnus and Joseph Keller, in 1954. He was a member
of our faculty until the mid-sixties when he left for Pasadena and
Caltech where he spent the rest of his life and career. The
collaboration of the two resulted in a very wellknown textbook
"Analysis of Numerical Methods" published by Wiley in 1966.

We are pleased to announce the 2010 Interpore Conference and Annual Meeting,

Subject: Para 2010: Parallel and Scientific Computing Conf. Iceland, Jun 2010

PARA 2010 will be hosted by the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences
of the University of Iceland, in Reykjavik on June 6-9, 2010. As for the last
two Para conferences the aim is to tackle "State of the Art in Scientific and
Parallel Computation".

THE TOPICS of the conference will include (but are not restricted to)
software, hardware, algorithms, tools, environments, as well as applications
of scientific and high performance computing.

THIS WILL BE THE 10TH PARA conference and it will uphold the traditions
built up with these. The conferences have all been held in the Nordic
countries, but with sizeable participation from other countries. As in
previous Para conferences the workshop sessions will consist of key lectures
as well as topical minisymposia and contributed papers in approximately 6 or
7 parallel streams. The list of minisymposia has not been finished yet.
Volunteers for organizing minisymposia are welcome. About 250 participants
are expected.

ABSTRACTS of invited and contributed talks will be handed out at the
conference. After the conference, original papers will be reviewed for
publication in conference proceedings, which as for earlier Para meetings
will be be published in the Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science
(LNCS).

Theoretical aspects of applied mathematical research on nonlinear waves and
coherent structures are relevant to subjects as diverse as general
relativity, high-energy particle and plasma physics, fluid and solid
mechanics, nonlinear electrical circuits, Bose-Einstein condensation,
nonlinear optics, random media, atmosphere and ocean dynamics, chemical
reactions, and biology. Remarkable agreement between theory and experiments
can be claimed in many of these fields.

The goals of NW10 are to provide a forum for the development of mathematical
methods and tools, to foster cross-fertilization among different fields of
application, and most crucially to enable communication between the
mathematicians who build the theory and the scientists who use it. The
conference program will consist of presentations on subjects ranging from
basic mathematical research to concrete applications.

will join a very active inter-disciplinary group at the Centre for
Computational Science, working between two interlinked projects funded
by EU FP7, the Virtual Physiological Human Network of Excellence and

The project will involve development, deployment and application of
advanced computational methods to support clinical decision-making in
interventional neurosurgery. It will involve collaboration with a
clinical team at UCL Hospital.

lattice-Boltzmann methods for 3D fluid dynamics within a high
performance computing environment. Experience of high performance
visualisation and medical imaging methodologies would be advantageous.

science and a proven ability to work as a member of a team.
