Subject: Algebraic Multigrid Software

We are pleased to announce release 2.0 of AGMG software package.

AGMG implements an aggregation-based algebraic multigrid method.
This method solves algebraic systems of linear equations, and is expected to
be efficient for large systems arising from the discretization of scalar
second order elliptic PDEs.
The method is however purely algebraic and may be tested on any problem.
No information has to be supplied besides the system matrix and the
right-hand-side.

AGMG comes either as a function that may be called from Matlab environment,
or as a Fortran 90 subroutine that may be linked with an application program.
Both versions have been designed to be easy to use by non experts.
In both cases, a tentative version for complex matrices is provided
together with the standard double precision version for real matrices.

A Fortran 90 parallel implementation is also provided.

For further details and download, see http://homepages.ulb.ac.be/~ynotay/AGMG

Subject: Global CO2 model

The Introductory Global CO2 Model announced previously (NA Digest, May
26, 2008, Volume 08, Issue 21) has been extended and now includes the
following:

(1) The structure of seven reservoirs (upper atmosphere, lower
atmosphere, long lived biota, short lived biota, ocean upper layer,
ocean deep layer and marine biosphere) has been retained. With
complete mixing assumed in each reservoir, the model consists of just
seven initial-value ODEs that are integrated numerically, typically
over the interval 1850 (preindustrial) to 2100.

(2) The ocean chemistry calculations address acidification (with ocean
pH typically ranging from 8.2 to 7.8). These calculations illustrate
some basic numerical procedures, e.g., a Newton solver applied to a
fourth order polynomial to calculate pH and spline interpolation to
provide additional model outputs.

(3) A basic global warming component has been added based on CO2
buildup in the lower atmosphere.

(4) The relative (dimensionless) ODE dependent variables (fractional
changes from 1850) are now also expressed as absolute variables,
typically GtC (gigatons of carbon), so that comparisons of the model
output with reported (literature) values is possible. Some brief
comparisons are provided in the documentation file.

(5) Projected anthropogenic CO2 emissions can be varied as in the
original model to investigate long-term responses, e.g., ppm CO2 in
the atmosphere and ocean pH.

The model is available as a set of commented Matlab routines on a CD,
with related documentation, through a request directed to
wes1@lehigh.edu. Please provide a postal mailing address. A small
package will be sent by US First Class mail or international air mail.

Please direct any questions to wes1@lehigh.edu.

Subject: Post-doctoral opportunity at the University of Minnesota

A postdoctoral position is available in the research group of
Prof. Jeffrey J. Derby (Chemical Engineering and Materials Science)
and Prof. Yousef Saad (Computer Science and Engineering) at the
University of Minnesota.

The position is initially available for 1 year with the possibility of
a renewal. The project focuses on large-scale linear system solvers
for multiphysics problems in material processing with a special
emphasis on melt crystal growth

Qualifications: PhD in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a science
or engineering discipline. Background in scientific computing
required. Candidate should have demonstrated competence in at least
one of C, C++, or Fortran 90. Familiarity with parallel computing
systems is desirable, as is familiarity with partial differential
equations, domain decomposition techniques, sparse matrices, and
iterative methods for linear systems. Knowledge of fluid dynamics and
transport phenomena is not required.

Description: An immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow is
available to work on the development and implementation of reliable
and efficient large-scale linear system solvers for multiphysics
problems in material processing with a special emphasis on melt
crystal growth. An existing parallel simulation code will be used to
perform numerical studies on problems derived from industrial bulk
crystal growth processes. Various methods for solving the linear
systems characteristic of these problems will be analyzed. Although
this project will emphasize applied mathematics and high-performance
computing, it will also provide an excellent opportunity to learn
about bulk crystal growth and other industrial applications of
modeling. The candidate will work closely with research groups from
the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and the
Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Please apply online via the Employment System at

Attach a resume/CV, cover letter including a description of research
experience and interests, and references. "References" means a list of
up to 3 individuals with full contact information.

In addition to the online application, applicants should send a vita,
including the names of up to 3 references, and a brief description of
research experience and interests via email to: derby@umn.edu.
