Subject: Mathematical assistant?

I'd like to know the answers of the numerical analysis community
to the following questions:

What would be the kind of computer system that could take the role
of a general-purpose mathematical assistant to practicing
mathematicians? Which features should it have in order that you
would like to use it? What is necessary or desirable to make such
a mathematical assistant a routine tool?

How should it improve upon tools such as LaTeX (type-setting, no
contents checking), Mathematica (symbolic math, no proofs), or
Matlab (computations, no rigor) that are much used by mathematicians
today? How must it differ from the current generation of proof
assistants (rigorous but difficult to use) that are hardly used
by mathematicians, and not at all used by them for their daily work?

How much (and which) mathematics should such a system know and/or
make accessible to the user, and at which level of formality?

Please send your reply directly to me (Arnold.Neumaier@univie.ac.at);
If I get enough interesting responses, I'll prepare a web page with
a digest of the answers.

Subject: Modeling Competition @ MOPTA 2009

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
AIMMS-CPLEX/MOPTA International Optimization Modeling Competition

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that we announce the first
AIMMS-CPLEX/MOPTA Optimization Modeling Competition for graduate
students. The competition is organized jointly by the conference
organizers of MOPTA and Paragon Decision Technology
(http://www.aimms.com) (the developers of AIMMS).

Teams of three graduate students can participate. Each member of the
team must be registered as a full-time graduate student at a
recognized educational institution during the spring term of the
2008-2009 academic year. Graduate students with a background in
operations research, regardless of their actual field of study are
eligible. Teams from all over the world can participate, as long as at
least one team member can come to the conference, should the team make
it to the final. All teams have to register at the MOPTA competition WEB
site. The official language of the competition is English.

The competition consists of two stages. In the first stage the teams
have to model an optimization problem using AIMMS (provided to the
participants free of charge). The best teams will compete in the
final, taking place at the 2009 MOPTA conference, August 19-21 at
Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA.

For more details and registration visit the conference website:

Subject: New book: Assignment Problems

Announcing the January 28, 2009 publication from SIAM of:

Assignment Problems, by Rainer Burkard, Mauro Dell’Amico, and Silvano
Martello

This book provides a comprehensive treatment of assignment problems from
their conceptual beginnings in the 1920s through present-day theoretical,
algorithmic, and practical developments. The authors have organized the book
into 10 self-contained chapters to make it easy for readers to use the
specific chapters of interest to them without having to read the book
linearly. The topics covered include bipartite matching algorithms, linear
assignment problems, quadratic assignment problems, multi-index assignment
problems, and many variations of these problems.

Assignment Problems is a useful tool for researchers, practitioners, and
graduate students. Researchers will benefit from the detailed exposition of
theory and algorithms related to assignment problems, including the basic
linear sum assignment problem and its many variations. Practitioners will
learn about practical applications of the methods, the performance of exact
and heuristic algorithms, and software options. This book also can serve as
a text for advanced courses in discrete mathematics, integer programming,
combinatorial optimization, and algorithmic computer science.

Texas State University is aggressively developing a new Materials Science and
Engineering program with federal, state and university funding based on
collaborations among the Departments of Physics, Chemistry & Biochemistry,
Biology, Technology and the Ingram School of Engineering. We invite
applications for two open positions to be immediately filled by outstanding
candidates with active and internationally recognized interdisciplinary
research efforts in advanced materials for emerging technologies. Rank,
tenure status and home department are negotiable based on qualifications. The
successful applicant(s) will establish a vigorous externally funded research
program, supervise graduate students, collaborate with other faculty, and be
committed to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We have
received a State of Texas Emerging Technology Fund Research Superiority
Acquisition Award that will provide highly competitive salaries and start-up
packages. In accordance with the guidelines of this award, preference will be
given to candidates from outside the state of Texas whose research efforts
have a high likelihood of supporting technology transfer and
commercialization.

Texas State is a doctoral-granting university located in the burgeoning
Austin-San Antonio corridor, the largest campus in The Texas State University
System, and among the largest in the state. Texas State’s 29,000 students
choose from 109 undergraduate and 88 master’s and 8 doctoral programs offered

The simulation laboratory at the Department of Microsystems
Engineering (IMTEK), University of Freiburg in Germany is looking for
a postdoctoral candidate to work in the area of topology optimization
for microscale fluid dynamics with fluid-structure interaction. The
position is initially available for 1 year, with the possibility of an
extention.

Qualifications: The successful candidate is expected to have completed
their Ph.D. studies in Applied Math, Computational Science,
Computational Engineering or a related field. The person should have a
strong background in numerical analysis, PDE solvers, discretization
methods, and scientific computing. A background in PDE-constrained
optimization and continuum mechanics is desirable. The willingness to
work in a team environment is essential. Applicants cannot have
received the PhD degree more than two years prior to the date of
application and must complete all degree requirements before starting
their appointment.
