AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture
Nominations due November 1, 2008

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and the Society for
Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) established the annual Sonia
Kovalevsky Lecture to highlight significant contributions of women to
applied or computational mathematics.

The Kovalevsky Lecture will be awarded at the 2009 SIAM Annual Meeting,
to be held July 6-10, 2009, in Denver, Colorado.

Letters of nomination should include an outline of the nominee's
contributions to applied or computational mathematics, along with a list
of some of the nominee's most important research papers. The
lectureship may be awarded to anyone in the scientific or engineering
community whose work highlights the achievements of women in applied or
computational mathematics.

Five copies of the nomination should be sent to the address below so as
to arrive by the deadline date, NOVEMBER 1, 2008. The deadline is the
date of receipt, not the postmarked date. Nominations via e-mail or fax
are not acceptable.

Subject: Probability distribution library for .NET

Probability distribution library for .NET

DCDFLIB is a popular library for evaluating the CDF (cumulative
distribution function) and related functions for some of the most
commonly used probability distributions. This library, in Fortran and
C versions, was developed by Barry Brown, John Venier, and Dan
Serachitopol at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Gene Harris has now made
a Managed C++ version of this library in order to make it easy to use
from languages such as C# built on top of Microsoft's .NET framework.

Full Professor (W3) in Applied Supercomputing in Engineering

We are seeking qualified applicants for teaching and research in the
area of Applied Supercomputing in Engineering. The starting date is
April 1, 2009. The position is based in the Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering and is part of the German Research School for Simulation
Sciences (GRS) - a research institute established and operated jointly
by RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich. GRS aims to
promote simulation sciences and the use of high-performance computing
to address critical issues in health, environment, energy, mobility
and IT research. The GRS strengthens the area of Computational
Engineering Science in Aachen, and supports a new English-language MS
program in Simulation Sciences. The position will be based in the GRS
facility on the Aachen campus and is limited initially to 5 years.

The candidate should have a strong background in the development and
application of state-of-the- art computational methods, models and
algorithms that enable the use of highly-scalable supercomputers to
solve new problems in engineering analysis and design. All application
areas of mechanical engineering, as well as chemical and aerospace
engineering will be considered; the ideal candidate should form strong
links with one of existing application clusters in the Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering.

A doctoral degree in engineering, natural sciences or computer science

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh invites
applications for a postdoctoral appointment starting the Fall Term
2009. The appointment is renewable annually to a maximum of three
years. The position is funded jointly by the University of Pittsburgh
and a new NSF Research Training Group (RTG) grant on complex
biological systems across multiple space and time scales, see

The research areas covered by the RTG include (i) the development and
analysis of mathematical models and computational algorithms for
solving spatio-temporal problems arising in biology and (ii) the
applications of these and other methods to problems arising in

newly created Chair of computational mathematics and numerical
analysis to be led by Prof. Assyr Abdulle from January 2009 at the

The main research focus will be in computational methods and numerical
analysis of multiscale partial differential equations and
stiff/multiscale stochastic differential equations with possible
applications in chemistry, medicine or material sciences.

A degree in mathematics, physics or related field is
required. Preference will be given to candidates with a good knowledge
of numerical methods for ordinary/partial or stochastic differential
equations. The candidates must be familiar with writing computer
codes (Matlab, Fortran or C++). Sufficient level of written and spoken
English is required.
