Subject: Looking for ill conditioned sparse matrices

We are interested in very ill conditioned sparse
matrices A (condition number of A is k(A) = O(1/eps), where eps
is double precision machine precision) for which it is necessary
to solve the corresponding linear system

Ax = b

with some reasonable accuracy.
The matrices can be either symmetric or unsymmetric.

If you have any such problems, we would be really grateful if you
could supply us with the data in a standard sparse matrix format
(Rutherford Boeing or coordinate format or as a Matlab file).

A brief description of the field where the matrix comes from
would be useful and, if possible, please provide an example of a
right-hand side b.

Subject: 2nd CS&E Student Paper Prize @ SIAM CS&E Conference 2009

The 2nd BGCE Student Paper Prize will be awarded at the 2009 SIAM CS&E
Conference, March 2-6, in Miami, Florida for outstanding student work
in the field of Computational Science and Engineering.

Founder of the prize is the Bavarian Graduate School of Computational
Engineering (BGCE, http://www.bgce.de/), a consortium offering an
honors track to the best students of three international Master's
programs in Computational Engineering at Technische Universitaet
Muenchen (TUM) and Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg (FAU). The prize
winner will be invited to spend one week (air fare and lodging
expenses covered) in Bavaria, visiting FAU and TUM and getting in
contact with BGCE's educational and research program, one of the most
advanced ones in Europe.

Eligible for the prize will be undergraduate and graduate students
prior to receiving their PhD (at date of submission). Candidates are
required to summarize their work in a short paper of at most 4 pages.
The prize finalists will be asked to present their work at SIAM CSE
2009 with a talk to be given in a special "CSE Student Prize
Minisymposium". The papers and talks will be evaluated by an
international prize committee. Excluded from the competition are only
students from our own universities, FAU and TUM. SIAM has a fund
available to help with students’ costs in attending meetings. Details

The latest version of the Computational Convex Analysis (CCA) numerical
library is now available from

The library allows the numerical computation of fundamental convex
transforms arising from Convex Analysis using hybrid symbolic-numeric
algorithms. It runs on the open source mathematical software Scilab.

Call for participation
Workshop on Numerics in Dynamical Systems
TKK Helsinki, April 23-25, 2009

The workshop will be part of the Numerical Analysis visitor program of
Finnish Mathematical Society for 2008-2009. It will concentrate on
dynamical systems and their numerical treatment using the interactive
play of analysis and numerics. Much attention will be paid on
qualitative analysis of dynamical systems using numerical methods. The
objects will include invariant sets, SRB-measures, bifurcation
phenomena, and Lyapunov exponents. The main topics of the workshop will
include preservation of important qualitative properties of systems in
their numerical time propagation. And even more generally: how to employ
efficiently in the numerical computations the available a priori
information of the system and a posteriori use: the aim of the
computation. For efficiency, the methods based on exponential
integrators and other types of lower dimensional local approximations
will get special interest.

The SMAI (french society for applied and industrial mathematics, see
http://smai.emath.fr/?lang=en ) has recently launched a new journal:
MathematicS In Action (MSIA).

The objective of MSIA, published with the help of the CEDRAM (center for
diffusion of academic mathematical journals), is to promote the interactions
between Mathematics and other sciences by publishing papers at
their interfaces written by at least two authors: a mathematician
and a specialist in another scientific community (biology, medicine,
economy, computer science, physics, chemistry, mechanics, environnemental
sciences, engineering sciences, etc.).

The papers deal with modelling, analysis and validation of models, numerical
methods and/or experimental methods. They must comprise a mathematical part
and either numerical or experimental results. They also must be useful and
globally accessible to their authors' scientific communities.

The refereeing process for a submitted paper involves a mathematician and a
specialist in the other concerned domain. To be accepted, a paper must be of
the highest scientific quality, original, and strongly interdisciplinary.

The Journal is an electronic publication and all articles are freely
available. However, each year a printed version is sent to a selection of
libraries.

system solvers for an integrated water flow model (IWFM) application
