The SIAM Activity Group on Dynamical Systems (SIAG/DS) Jurgen Moser
Lecture is awarded every two years to a person who has made
distinguished contributions to nonlinear science. The term "nonlinear
science" includes dynamical systems theory and its applications, as well
as experiments and computations/simulations.
The SIAG/DS will award the prize at the SIAM Conference on Applications
of Dynamical Systems (DS09), to be held May 17-21, 2009, at Snowbird,
Utah. The award will include a plaque, a certificate, a $500 cash
award, and an invitation to give a plenary lecture at the conference.
In addition to reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses, the
recipient will receive a $500 honorarium for the lecture.
Previous Moser Lecturers are Yakov Sinai (2001), David Ruelle (2003),
Stephen Smale (2005), and Harry Swinney (2007).

Ralph E. Kleinman Prize
The Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded to an individual for outstanding
research or other contributions that bridge the gap between mathematics
and applications. Work that uses high-level mathematics and/or invents
new mathematical tools to solve applied problems from engineering,
science, and technology is particularly appropriate. The prize may be
awarded for a single notable achievement or for a collection of such
achievements.
The Kleinman Prize will be awarded at the SIAM Annual Meeting (AN09) to

Subject: The Ostrowski Prize 2009 - Call for proposals - Deadline Dec 1
The aim of the Ostrowski Foundation is to promote the science of
mathematics by periodically awarding an international prize for the
best performances in the field of pure mathematics and of the
theoretical foundations of numerical mathematics. As a rule, the prize
is awarded every two years to the scientist, or group of scientists,
who, during the preceding five years, has achieved the highest
scientific accomplishments in these fields. It is awarded
independently of politics, race, religion, domicile, nationality or
age. The prize in 2007 amounted to 100,000 Swiss francs.
The Foundation awards at the same time a scholarship for a talented
young mathematician, whose name is to be suggested by the current
prizewinners. The scholarship will enable the winner to spend a year
for further education (as a postdoctoral fellow) at a university of
his or her own choice.

Trilinos Version 9.0 is available for download at the Trilinos website.
Trilinos 9.0 has an expanded scope beyond solvers to include other
solution components such as mesh generation, load balancing and
support tools for developing scalable parallel applications.
Overview:
The Trilinos Project is an effort to develop algorithms and enabling
technologies within an object-oriented software framework for the
solution of large-scale, complex multi-physics engineering and
scientific problems. All packages are self-contained, with the
Trilinos top layer providing a common look-and-feel and
infrastructure.

The subject of this workshop is the design of experiments to gather
data for identifying the parameters of mathematical models of
processes in industry and science, in particular models that include
differential equations of some sort (ODEs, PDEs, or DAEs). The
fundamental insight is that, in many documented cases, it is possible
to drastically reduce the number and cost of experiments, and at the
same time improve accuracy of the estimated parameters, by using
modern numerical and analytical techniques. By bringing together
researchers from academia and industry, we hope to foster fruitful
discussion and exchange on such techniques, specific applications, and
areas where further research is needed.

The Computer Science Research Institute (CSRI) at Sandia National
Laboratories conducts research in mathematical and computer sciences
with application to a broad range of science and engineering
applications of national and global importance. The CSRI maintains
world-class research programs in computational and discrete
mathematics, computer science, scalable algorithms, and large-scale
high- performance computer systems. We are searching for a
post-doctoral candidate to conduct R&D in numerical algorithms for
scalable multicore computers.
This position involves activities toward the goal of effective use of
emerging and future scalable multicore computers for science and
engineering applications. Candidates are sought with a strong
background in high performance numerical linear algebra including
parallel multilevel algorithms, algorithms for multicore
architectures, and object-oriented scientific software
engineering. Experience with Trilinos software is desirable.
Outstanding applicants in related areas will also be considered.
Applicants must have (or soon have) a Ph.D. in mathematics, computer
science, statistics, or related fields with a record of academic
excellence (3.5 GPA or higher). Programming experience (C++ required;
Fortran & Matlab desired) with knowledge of parallel programming such
as MPI, OpenMP, and/or threads is desired. Communication skills
appropriate for participating in multi-disciplinary teams of
mathematicians, engineers and computer scientists is required, as is
research experience in your field of expertise as evidenced by
presentations, technical publications, released software, and/or work
with applications. Interest and experience in the use of advanced
object-oriented software engineering practices and processes is
desirable. Experience in high-performance computing on distributed,
parallel, and/or other specialized architectures is also desired.

South Wales seeks to appoint Postdoctoral Fellows as members of the
ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematics and Statistics of Complex
Systems (MASCOS), in which the School is a major participant. The
four Chief Investigators at UNSW are Professors A.H. Dooley,
M.H. England, I.H. Sloan and G. Froyland. Persons appointed under
this advertisement will be associated with one or more of the
following projects:
- Ergodic theory and dynamical systems (Dooley).
- Harmonic analysis on Lie groups and symmetric spaces (Dooley).
- Quasi-Monte Carlo methods for numerical integration and
approximation in high dimensions, and stochastic applications (Sloan).
- Approximation and PDEs on spheres and manifolds - theory and
applications (Sloan).
The salary range for Post Doctoral Fellow is A$65,503 - A$70,062 per
year (plus up to 17% employer superannuation plus leave loading).
Although appointments are at UNSW, it should be noted that interaction
and collaboration between the five nodes of MASCOS is an obligation to
the ARC, the funding body, and is strongly fostered. Appointees will
have opportunity and encouragement to visit and work with staff of
other nodes. The positions are partly funded by the Australian
Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI). These are fixed term
positions for up to two years. Applicants with proven teaching
abilities may seek a variant of the position in which 25% of the
appointment is considered as a regular academic appointment funded by
