5th Special Issue of Parallel Computing (Elsevier)
on Parallel Matrix Algorithms and Applications

Deadline for submissions: October 15, 2008.

This 5th special issue of Parallel Computing on Parallel Matrix
Algorithms and Applications is devoted to various novel, efficient
linear algebra techniques and their applications in diverse areas of
science and industry. The special issue is to follow the PMAA'08
Workshop, which was held in Neuchatel, Switzerland, June, 20-22, 2008
(http://www.dcs.bbk.ac.uk/pmaa08/). However, the papers solicited in
this call for papers are not restricted to the contributions presented
during the Workshop. Submissions from other researchers, which fit the
scope of this special issue are also welcomed.

Papers submitted to the special issue should have a strong parallel
computing and numerical linear algebra component. Topics to be
covered in the issue include, but are not limited to:

* Parallel methods for solving large linear systems of equations:
direct, iterative, domain decomposition.
* Parallel eigenvalue and singular value computations.
* Parallel matrix multiplication and combinatorial scientific
computing.
* Parallel linear algebra methods in Data Mining.
* Automatic tuning and performance modeling.
* Novel architectural paradigms (e.g. GPU and multicore) and their use
in matrix computations and applications.
* Large scale scientific applications from diverse fields which have
an emphasis on parallel matrix computation.

Manuscripts will undergo the standard Parallel Computing
peer-reviewing process. They should be submitted electronically via
the Journal's online submission system http://ees.elsevier.com/parco/
and the authors should follow the instructions in the Guide for
Authors. In particular, when choosing the Article type during the

Subject: Post-doc in NA and scientific computing between IFP and LJLL, Paris

A postdoctoral position will be opened from September 2008 (optimally) in
the framework of a collaborative project between the « Institut Francais du
Petrole » and the « Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions » in Paris. It will be
aimed at the study of a posteriori error estimation and adaptive refinement
strategies and their application to numerical approximation of problems
displaying steep fronts with complex physics.

The candidate will be asked to use the latest advancements in robust a
posteriori error estimation applied to multi-point finite volume schemes
(MPFV) for the approximation of heterogeneous and anisotropic diffusion
operators on general meshes. In a practical part, the work will focus on the
extension of such techniques to CO2 injection and enhanced thermal oil
recovery modelling. In particular, the following points will be considered:
1) the development of a posteriori estimators adapted to the physical
problems; 2) the definition of dynamic front tracking and local refinement
strategies; 3) a prototype code development for the simulation of thermal
black oil models on adaptive meshes. In a theoretical part, rigorous a
posteriori error estimates certifying the discretization error for a
simplified problem will be derived, with the intention of the publication of
the results in the highest-quality numerical analysis journals.

The knowledge of French language is welcome but not compulsory. The position
is for 12 months, renewable up to 18 months. To apply, send your CV

(TUHH), Germany, there is an open Ph.D. position for four years.
The candidate will be funded by the Hamburg University of Technology, full
position TV-L 13 (formerly BAT IIa).

We are looking for a candidate having Master or equivalent university degree
with interest, motivation and background in applied mathematics (e.g. partial
differential equations, numerical methods), mathematical modelling
and/or scientific computing. Computational skills in C or C++ will be an asset.

The candidate will work on numerical simulation of hyperbolic conservation
laws having application in modelling of geophysical flows (oceanography,
river flow engineering). S/he will get opportunity to cooperate with experts
from geophysics and river flow engineering. Furthermore, the candidate will
profit from motivating international enviroment within the EU Graduate College
"Differential Equations in Science and Engineering".
