Subject: HSL 2007: free academic access worldwide

The internationally renowned mathematical software library HSL has long been
known as a source of high quality, robust and efficient mathematical software.
Among the Library's best known software packages are those for the solution of
sparse linear systems of equations, optimization, and sparse eigenvalue
problems. HSL is developed, supported and maintained by the STFC Numerical
Analysis Group at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
(http://www.cse.scitech.ac.uk./nag). The Group is very pleased to be able to
announce that, starting with the current release (HSL 2007), versions of the
individual library packages are now available without charge to individual
academic users worldwide for their personal (non-commercial) research and for
teaching. Full details of the terms and conditions are given at
http://hsl.rl.ac.uk/hsl2007/hsl20074researchers.html No support is offered to
academic users and STFC makes no warranty as to its use or performance.

Access to the library is by means of a short-lived individual
password-controlled account. Potential users need an email address at a
recognised academic institution and are asked to provide brief details of
the use they intend to make of the package(s) they want to download;
this data is important as it will help us to evaluate the relevance of our
software to academia. Applications to use HSL software are assessed by the
HSL team. STFC reserves the right not to grant a licence.

Commercial licences are available and a separate licence is required to
incorporate any HSL package into a software product that is to be distributed
or sold to third parties.

Subject: Graph visualization of UF sparse matrix collection

Yifan Hu (AT&T) has applied his graph-drawing program to generate some truly
beautiful pictures of all square matrices in the UF Sparse Matrix Collection.
It computes coordinates for each node in the graph, based solely on the
connectivity. I've updated my collection to include links to his drawings of
each matrix. A few of the matrix problems come with geometric coordinates
from the problem itself, which makes for a nice comparison. See, for example:

http://www.cise.ufl.edu/research/sparse/matrices/Pothen/commanche_dual.html

If you'd like to submit matrices to the collection, use:

http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~web-gfs

Of particular current interest are large rank-deficient least squares
problems, and *unassembled* finite-element problems. For the latter, a file
with one number per line is simplest (assuming symmetric nonzero pattern but
perhaps unsymmetric values):

write n
write nel, the number of elements
for each element
write r, the dimension of the element
write the r row/column indices (either 1-based or 0-based)
write the r*r numerical values, in column major order
end

Subject: Large Scale Computations on Grids (LaSCoG), Poland, Oct 2008

4th Workshop on Large Scale Computations on Grids (LaSCoG'08)
Wisla, Poland, October 20-22, 2008

IMPORTANT NEWS:

* All accepted and presented IMCSIT papers will be included in the IEEE
Xplore Digital Library, therefore the format of the submission was
changed to 8 pages of IEEE style http://www.submit.imcsit.org/.

* New deadline for paper submission: 15.06.2008

* Paper Submission System is now open

Large Scale Computations on Grids (LaSCoG) Workshop will be organized
within the framework of the International Multiconference on Computer
Science and Information Technology and co-located with the XXIV Autumn
Meeting of the Polish Information Processing Society.

The emerging paradigm for execution of large-scale computations, whether
they originate as scientific or engineering applications, or for
supporting large data-intensive calculations, is to utilize multiple
computers at sites distributed across the Internet. In particular,
computational grids are collections of distributed, possibly
heterogeneous resources which can be used as ensembles to execute
large-scale applications. While the vision of the global computational
Grid is extremely appealing, there remains a lot of work on all levels
to achieve it. In this context the LaSCoG workshop is envisioned as a
forum to promote exchange of ideas and results aimed at addressing
complex issues that arise in developing large-scale computations on
Grids and running applications on them.

Papers Submission
* Authors should submit draft papers (as Postscript, PDF of MSWord file).
* The total length of a paper should not exceed 8 pages (IEEE
style). IEEE style templates are available here.
* Papers will be refereed and accepted on the basis of their
scientific merit and relevance to the workshop.
* Accepted and Presented paper will be published a paper in the
Conference Proceedings and included in the IEEE Xplore® database.
* Extended versions of selected papers will be published in a
Special Issue of the Scalable Computing; Practice and Experience journal.

The K.U.Leuven Campus Kortrijk, Belgium, seeks candidates for a PhD and a
post-doc position in the broad area of tensor-based signal processing and

By higher-order tensors we mean arrays of numbers characterized by more than
two indices. In this sense, tensors are the higher-order equivalent of vectors

3 PhD positions in the field of computational multiscale modeling

The University of Twente (UT) is an enterprising research-oriented
university, established in Enschede, the Netherlands. UT currently has
over 7000 students and 2700 staff. As a young and innovative
university, UT is internationally respected in the physical and
engineering sciences. UT is the only Dutch campus university with many
sports and cultural facilities.

Background of the projects:

The PhD positions focus on multi-phase transport of heat and mass in
complex media. This involves the dynamics of large ensembles of small
droplets in a gas flow through a domain with complex shape. The
droplets undergo phase transition, i.e., evaporation and condensation,
and chemical transformations. In addition, the droplets mutually
collide, leading to break-up or coalescence. The individual projects
share a mathematical-physical multiscale modeling strategy, which is
at the heart of research at the MMS group. Separate projects are:

• PhD1: Multiscale heat and mass transport in porous plugs
• PhD2: Aerosol dynamics in complex domains
• PhD3: Control of aerosol migration with temperature gradients

These projects will be conducted in a collaboration with international
industrial partners. For more information, contact
prof.dr.ir. B.J. Geurts at b.j.geurts@utwente.nl or visit
http://wwwhome.math.utwente.nl/_geurtsbj/MMS/Welcome.html

Requirements: You have an MSc degree in Applied Mathematics, Physics
or an Engineering Science, with interest in computational modeling and
simulation.

Offer: You will be appointed for a period of four years. After one
year a project evaluation will take place, and a decision will be made
about the continuation of the project. The salary starts at 2000 EUR
gross per month increasing to 2558 EUR gross per month in the fourth
year.

Applications: You are invited to send your application to
b.j.geurts@utwente.nl before June 1, 2008. Please include a letter
describing your personal motivation, your CV, names and addresses of
referees, a list of courses you completed and the grades you obtained.

The chair MMS is part of the Applied Analysis and Computational
Sciences (AACS) cluster at the Department of Applied Mathematics of
EEMCS, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer
Sciences. The research at MMS is embedded in the mechanics institute
IMPACT at UT, in the J.M. Burgers Center for Fluid Mechanics in the
Netherlands and in the recently established Dutch Center of Excellence
‘Fluids and Solids’. In the MMS group pioneering research is conducted
in mathematics, physics and computational science. This is applied to
fluid mechanics problems in nature and technology both at very large
and very small scales. Emphasis is on problems related to energy,
environment and health.
