Subject: Sinc-Pack

Sinc-Pack has finally been copyrighted by the company, SINC, LLC. Send e-mail
to sinc_f@msn.com if you are interested in purchasing this package.

A brief blurb:

Sinc-Pack consists of tutorial of more than 470 pages, and an
accompanying set of over 460 Matlab programs. It contains many
examples.

In one dimension, it does: interpolation, differentiation, definite integration,
indefinite integration, indefinite convolution (linear & nonlinear), wavelet
computations, Laplace (and other) transforms & inversion, Hilbert transforms,
analytic continuation, Volterra integral equation solutions, Fredholm integral
equation solutions (e.g., Wiener-Hopf), Solutions of ODE, etc.

In more than one dimensions the package is able to solve partial differential
(PDE) and integral equations (IE). The procedures are new, e.g. essentially
the same method is used to solve (linear & nonlinear) elliptic, parabolic, and
hyperbolic PDE. It also gives a proof that solutions of PDE are always* ((*)
see the Preface of Sinc-Pack) solvable via separation of variables, provided
that the PDE is modeled via use of calculus. This contradicts the proof in
Morse & Feshbach, where it is shown that in 3d, Laplace and Helmholtz PDE are
solvable via separation of variable in essentially only 13 coordinate systems.
We can thus solve all* PDE via one dimensional Sinc methods, i.e., without
use of large matrices, and this frequently enables orders of magnitude
speed-up over methods currently in use. A number of explicit examples of
solutions over multidimensional regions are given (e.g., solutions of
Navier-Stokes equations that are uniformly accurate on R^3 x [0,T]).

Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (sPDEs) are PDEs with random
field input data (coefficients, loadings and domains). They arise
increasingly often in mathematical models for a number of domains.
Some examples are: classical engineering disciplines, economics and
finance, biology and chemistry.

The purpose of the NASPDE workshop includes
- review of progress in mathematical (re)formulation of PDEs accomodating
for random inputs of white noise type as well as with correlations
- review of engineering applications of sPDEs
- investigation of the well-posedness and stochastic regularity of SPDEs
- numerical analysis and computer implementation of efficient numerical
solution methods for sPDEs

Format of the NASPDE Workshop: The NASPDE workshops are held annually,
and are informal. Thematics emphasis is placed on new mathematical
results impinging on NASPDE. Of particular interest are new
developments at the interface of stochastic and numerical analysis.

Registration: To have an estimate of the expected attendance, you will
be required to register for this workshop. A small registration fee
to cover coffee breaks and expenses will be charged. Detailed
registration procedures will be published on the web at a later stage.

Contact: In case you need to contact the organizers of the workshop,

Subject: ICFD Wksp on Mathematics & Applications of Data Assimilation, May 2008

One-day workshop on Mathematics and Applications of Data Assimilation
Thursday 1st May 2008
University of Reading, UK

In the geophysical and engineering sciences there are many applications
for which sophisticated mathematical models have been developed and for
which significant observational data are also available. These
applications include short term weather prediction, atmospheric carbon
transport, ocean current modeling, climate change, river and coastal
flood forecasting and prediction of reservoir flows. Blending the
predictive capability of the mathematical models with the information
contained in the data - known as data assimilation - is a very important
task and has enormous potential pay-back. Many challenging mathematical
questions arise naturally in the context of data assimilation. These are
related to the strongly nonlinear dynamical systems governing the
evolution of key quantities, the non-Gaussian behaviour of statistical
estimates of the system, the multi-scale nature of the processes
involved, and the high dimensionality of computational algorithms for
the problem.

This workshop, as well as introducing the problem and techniques of data
assimilation, will present its use in a number of applications and will
give some new directions for future research. The workshop is suitable
for academics and industrialists wishing to learn about or extend their
knowledge of data assimilation and its potential applications.

The workshop will take place at the University of Reading, UK on
Thursday 1st May 2008.

Please see www.icfd.reading.ac.uk for registration information.

Subject: Proposal for a Post-Doctorate work inside the COPOLA project

Subject : Studying and developing numerical solutions for the
simulation of the chemical ageing of organic polymers (polyethylene,
polypropylene and associated elastomers), within the context of COPOLA
project.

Framework : The COPOLA project proposes to create a numerical tool for
the simulating the ageing of organic polymers. The ageing process is
modelled as the result of various mechanisms of chemical
degradation. Chemical degradation may occur under radiolysis or
thermolysis, and with or without air. We have to take into account the
migration of reactive species as well as the chemical reactions
themselves. The study of chemical ageing of organic polymers is of
great interest to research and industry. The COPOLA project (Composite
and POLymer Ageing) brings together many research and industrial
partners, including the CEA (french agency for nuclear energy), the
ANDRA (French agency for nuclear waste management), AREVA, EdF , the
ENSAM (École des Arts et Métiers), the ENSCP (Paris National School of
Chemistry), the CNRS (French research agency), Nexans, Laborelec, the
INRA (national Institute for Agronomics)… COPOLA aims to establish a
new way of determining the lifespan of polymers of interest to
industry. This new method should be based upon a precise and
exhaustive understanding of the phenomena, and accurate modelling. In
order to improve the physical modelling, many experiments are
conducted within the various laboratories taking part in the COPOLA
project. These experiments take place in a wide range of industrial
situations, from nuclear waste in geologic storage conditions to
plastic films for food packaging, under radioactive irradiation or
through the action of the oxygen. Current modelling implies a
coupling between diffusive transport and chemical exchanges. The
chemical reactions are assumed to obey a second-order kinetic law. The
values of chemical parameters lead to a very stiff non-linear system
which can introduce numerical difficulties. The numerical tool that we
aim to create should be sufficiently robust for industrial use. But in
the meantime, since the modelling is likely to evolve, we need it to
be flexible as well. Experimentalists should be able to change
parameters and to access a wide range of physical laws in order to fit
experimental data.

Organisation: The work will take place in the CEA (France, Parisian
region), but regular meetings with other partners of COPOLA projects
will ensure that the final tool matches the needs of potential users,
both in the industry and in the universities, where modelling
experiments are conducted. The first stage of the work will consist
in reshaping an existing numerical module. This module resolves the
transport of radioactive nuclides, according to a classical
advection-diffusion equation with radioactive decay, precipitation and
source terms. If we ignore advection, precipitation and source terms,
the ageing of polymers follows a similar equation if we choose to see
the kinetically-controlled chemical degradations as a ‘second-order
radioactive decay’. Replacing a first-order kinetic law by a
second-order kinetic law introduces a non-linearity. Different methods
of linearization and resolution should be tried to solve this problem,
but a fixed point algorithm could be a good starting point. This
first stage consists mainly of introducing the second-order kinetic
with a fixed point algorithm. This first modifying of the module is
expected to occupy approximately the first six months. A test-case of
thermo-oxydative ageing of polypropylen will act as a basis for work
and a reference for the analysis of the first numerical results. An
existing text-based database should be used for the evaluation of
physical parameters. The second stage of the work consist of
proposing other numerical solutions, such as Newton or Non Linear
Conjugate Gradient. Coding languages to be used are Fortran, Python
and C++.
