Subject: Gene-tic Algorithm: A Gene Golub cryptic crossword
I have compiled a cryptic crossword designed to be possible only for those who
have perused Gene Golub's list of publications. A PDF version of the

1. Having e-mailed a correct solution that reaches me before
23:59:59, South African time (GMT+02:00) on 26 March 2008;
2. Being present, either in person or by proxy (i.e. ask anyone except
me) to receive the prize during the conference dinner of the South
African Symposium on Numerical and Applied Mathematics, 27 March 2008;
three will be drawn at random to receive a bottle of red wine rated at
four-and-a-half stars (out of five) in John Platter's Wine Guide, 2007 edition.
For the sake of those who are better at solving knapsack problems than cryptic
clues: the sum of the MR numbers of a set of reviews (cardinality not given)
that supply all the required titles and co-authors is 24616603.
To help you to decide whether you wish to try it out, here is the preamble and
three sample clues.
Gene-tic Algorithm by Dirk Laurie
The answers come in three classes of twelve each, specified by the
letter, if any, appearing before its length indication. The absence
of a letter indicates a normal cryptic clue. The clues tagged with
an A lack the customary definition part, their common definition being
"surname of an author whose Golub number is 1". The clues tagged with
a W consist of just one word, which is either the previous or the next
word to the answer (except for trivial particles like 'the', 'of',
etc.) in the title of a paper authored or co-authored by Gene Golub.
Punctuation may be misleading. The compiler consulted The Chambers
Dictionary (1993) for English and MathSciNet for a list of MR reviews
of papers by Gene Golub.

A workshop on 'Multiscale modeling of moving interfaces in materials' will be
held in Leuven, Belgium, on July 2-4, 2008.

Modeling the evolution of polycrystalline and multi-phase materials is a
challenging task, due to its inherent multi-scale nature, which requires
expertise in both materials science and scientific computing. Grain boundary
and interface movement, for instance, are influenced by phenomena on scales
ranging from the atomistic (dislocations, ...) up to the mesoscale
(dislocation structures, solutes, second phase particles,...).
The goal of this workshop is to bring together scientists in materials
science, scientific computing and computational engineering, and to provide
them an introduction to :
(1) the principles and state-of-the-art of modeling and simulation techniques
at the (near) atomistic scale;
(2) coarse-graining techniques for upscaling to larger length and time scales.
We have very limited room for contributed lectures related to the above
topics. However, we will provide room to put up a poster for the entire
duration of the workshop, and we encourage every participant to bring a
poster.

A post-doc position is open in the Parallel Algorithms and
Optimization group at INPT-ENSEEIHT-IRIT in Toulouse, France. We are
looking for candidates at post-doc level with interest, motivation and
background in both numerical analysis and numerical
computing. Experience in high performance computing and mathematics
(with publications) is required.
The candidates will work in the framework of the research project
Solstice (http://solstice.gforge.inria.fr) funded by the French
Research Agency (ANR) where the academic and industrial partners are
CEA, CERFACS, EDF, INRIA, CNRS/CNRM.
The candidate will have to work on the study and parallel
implementation on large parallel computing platforms of hybrid solvers
for the solution of large sparse linear systems.
