The next Foundations of Computational Mathematics conference will take
place at the City University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong, China, on 16-26
June 2008.
The conference, organised by the Society for Foundations of
Computational Mathematics, is the sixth in a sequence that commenced
with the Park City, Rio de Janeiro, Oxford, Minneapolis and Santander
FoCM meetings.
The conference will follow a well-tested format: plenary invited
lectures in the mornings and theme-centred parallel workshops in the
afternoons. Confirmed plenary speakers include:
FRANCO BREZZI PETER BUERGISSER EMMANUEL CANDES
PERCY DEIFT LUC DEVROYE ALICIA DICKENSTEIN
NIRA DYN PHILIPPE FLAJOLET GASTON GONNET
ALEXANDER ITS PETER KLOEDEN HENDRIK LENSTRA
PABLO PARRILO CHRISTOPH SCHWAB CHARLES SIMO
EITAN TADMOR RODERICK WONG HENRYK WOZNIAKOWSKI
The workshops to be held at FoCM 2008 are:
* Approximation theory * Asymptotic analysis
* Computational algebraic geometry * Computational dynamics
* Computational number theory * Foundations of numerical PDEs
* Geometric integration and computational mechanics
* Image and signal processing * Information-based complexity
* Learning theory
* Multiresolution and adaptivity in numerical PDEs
* Numerical linear algebra * Optimization
* Real-number complexity * Relations with computer science
* Special functions and orthogonal polynomials
* Stochastic computation
The FoCM conferences are designed to bring together workers in
computational mathematics and theoreticians in mathematics and in
computer science. While presenting plenary talks by foremost world
authorities and maintaining the highest technical level in the
workshops, the emphasis will be on multidisciplinary interaction
across subjects and disciplines, in an informal and friendly
atmosphere. We hope that it will be an opportunity to meet colleagues
from different subject areas and identify the wide-ranging (and often
surprising) common denominator of our research.
The preliminary website of the conference is at
http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/na/FoCM/FoCM08/, where a list of the
workshops and their organizers can be found. More information about FoCM
and details of previous FoCM conferences can also be obtained there.
If you are interested in presenting a talk at one of the workshops,
please contact the relevant workshop organizers.

PhD Position in the Computational Fluid Dynamics Research Group
At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, a PhD
scholarship is available in the Computational Fluid Dynamics Research
Group at the Division of Fluids Engineering, Department of Energy and
Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology.
We have been active in multiphase flow simulations and have had close
collaboration with SINTEF, The Foundation for Scientific and
Industrial Research at the Norwegian Institute of Technology.
The objective of the current PhD project 'Lattice Boltzmann Method for
Multiphase Flow Simulation' is to develop, analyze and apply lattice
Boltzmann methods for multiphase flow simulation. As the approach
originates from a microscopic description of fluid flow, modeling of
multiphase flow is expected to be easier in phase space than in
physical space. Microscopic multiphase models will be analyzed and
compared to macroscopic ones. After implementation and validation for
multiphase benchmark test cases, the lattice Boltzmann methods will be
applied to study the interaction of drops with liquid films in gas
flow.
The PhD candidate is expected to hold a master's degree in a subject
relevant for the PhD project and to have
* good knowledge of fluid dynamics,
* good knowledge of scientific computing, and
* good programming skills.
Some acquaintance with multiphase flow or molecular gasdynamics will
be useful.
The PhD scholarship is limited to 4 years. The annual gross salary
will be between NOK 325 600 and NOK 348 900. It is required that the
person employed satisfies the requirements for PhD students,
participates in the course program of the PhD studies and finishes the
PhD degree within 4 years. For 25 % of the time, the candidate will
assist the Division of Fluid Dynamics in teaching obligations.
Further information about the position may be obtained from
Professor Bernhard Müller (bernhard.muller@ntnu.no),
Professor Tor Ytrehus (tor.ytrehus@ntnu.no), and
Dr. Maria Fernandino (Maria.Fernandino@sintef.no).
Applications, marked with IVT-60/07, grade transcripts and other
enclosures should be sent electronically through

Mathematical Modelling of Terahertz Scattering
The goal is to develop analytical and computational methods for the
simulation of scattering of terahertz (THz) beams by sample geometries. Use
of THz spectroscopy and imaging is currently being explored for use in
numerous applications, such as defect-detection in materials and medical
imaging for cancer diagnosis, for which an accurate understanding of the
scattering of THz beams by complex objects is essential. Because of the
widths of the beams relative to the wavelengths involved, diffraction is a
very significant aspect of propagation and poses an extra challenge that
has to be accounted for in understanding scattering at THz frequencies.
Emphasis will be put upon developing an efficient approximate mathematical
description of the THz beam, via 1) a mathematical analysis of the
interaction of the beam with simple canonical shapes, and 2) a comparison
of mathematical results with corresponding experimental data. The primary
output from the project will be a novel, accurate and computationally
efficient description of the scattering of a THz beam, which will prove
invaluable for future applications of THz imaging and spectroscopy.
Start date: October 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter. Student
stipend: £12,600 in 2007-8, plus home/EU tuition fees for three years.
Applicants should possess a first degree in Mathematics (or related
subject) at grade 2:1 (or equivalent). Closing date for applications:
Friday 20th July, 2007. Application forms may be obtained from
