This version has 27 packages, 9 of which are new, with major enhancements to

Overview:

Trilinos is a collection of compatible software packages that support parallel
linear algebra computations, solution and optimization of linear, non-linear,
transient and eigen systems of equations and related capabilities. The
majority of packages are written in C++ using object-oriented techniques. All
packages are self-contained, with the Trilinos top layer providing a common
look-and-feel and infrastructure. In addition to native C++ interfaces,
Trilinos offers Python interfaces vi PyTrilinos and a new web-based interface
via WebTrilinos.

Packages:

The version 7.0 general release contains 27 packages: Amesos, Anasazi,
AztecOO, Didasko, Epetra, EpetraExt, Galeri, IFPACK, Isorropia, Kokkos,
Komplex, LOCA, Meros, Moertel, MOOCHO, ML, New_Package, NOX, Pliris,
PyTrilinos, RTOp, Rythmos, Stratimikos, Teuchos, Thyra, Triutils, and
WebTrilinos.

In addition to many new features across most packages, Trilinos Release 7.0
contains nine packages that are being released for the first time:

- Galeri (distributed linear system generation).
- Isorropia (repartitioning and rebalancing).
- Meros (segregated preconditioning).
- Moertel (Mortar methods).
- MOOCHO (Multifunctional Object-Oriented arCHitecture for Optimization)
- RTOp (reduction/transformation operators).
- Rythmos (transient integrator for ordinary differential equations and
differential-algebraic equations).
- Stratimikos (unified set of Thyra-based wrappers to linear solver and
preconditioner capabilities).
- WebTrilinos (web-based interface to some Trilinos packages - must be set
up on a user's server/machine).

Finally, this version of Trilinos support dynamic registration of
externally-developed packages into the Trilinos build system for increased
interoperability with other solver packages. See

We are pleased to announce the release of SLEPc 2.3.2. This release is a
major milestone in the development of SLEPc since it includes a new
Krylov-Schur eigensolver, a state-of-the-art algorithm in the sparse
eigenvalue scenario. Additional new features are listed in

with both PETSc 2.3.2 and 2.3.1.

About SLEPc: SLEPc is a parallel software library for the solution of
large sparse eigenvalue problems on parallel computers. It can be used
for the solution of problems formulated in either standard or
generalized form, both Hermitian and non-Hermitian, with either real or
complex arithmetic. SLEPc is built on top of PETSc, the Portable
Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation
(http://www.mcs.anl.gov/petsc). It can be considered an extension of
PETSc providing all the functionality necessary for the solution of
eigenvalue problems, including different eigensolvers as well as
built-in support for spectral transformations such as shift-and-invert.

Subject: Block Locally Optimal Preconditioned Eigenvalue Xolvers (BLOPEX) software

BLOPEX (http://www-math.cudenver.edu/~aknyazev/software/BLOPEX/) is a package,
written in C, that at present includes only one eigenxolver, Locally Optimal
Block Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Method (LOBPCG), see
http://www.netlib.org/na-digest-html/00/v00n07.html#6 and
http://dx.doi.org/10.1137/S1064827500366124 .

Main features: a matrix-free iterative method for computing several extreme
eigenpairs of symmetric positive generalized eigenproblems; a user-defined
symmetric positive preconditioner can be used; robustness with respect to
random initial approximations, variable preconditioners, and ill-conditioning
of the stiffness matrix; possibly nearly optimal convergence speed.

BLOPEX supports parallel MPI-based computations through an abstract layer. The
core of BLOPEX is the archive blopex_abstract.tgz, which contains the
eigenxolvers codes and can be compiled into the BLOPEX library, using the
sample Makefiles provided. To test the basic functionality of the BLOPEX
library, we include the archive blopex_serial.tgz with a simple serial test
driver (preinstalled LAPACK is required).

BLOPEX is incorporated in the Hypre package from CASC of LLNL, see
http://www.llnl.gov/casc/hypre/software.html. Sample BLOPEX-Hypre tests are
the lines in Hypre test/TEST_ij/*.jobs and test/TEST_struct/*.jobs that
contain -lobpcg option.

BLOPEX is also available as an external block to the PETSc package from
Mathematics and Computer Science Division of ANL, see
http://www-unix.mcs.anl.gov/petsc/petsc-as/. Download the latest PETSc and
configure it with ./config/configure.py --download-hypre=1 --download-blopex=1
options to use BLOPEX-PETSc with Hypre preconditioning. Sample BLOPEX-PETSc
test drivers are in the PETSc src/contrib/blopex directory.

Finally, BLOPEX is available in and for MATLAB as the archive
blopex_matlab.tgz, which contains the MATLAB source of the LOBPCG eigenxolver
(also available from
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/loadFile.do?objectId=48&objectType=FILE)
and the MATLAB interface to the C code of blopex_abstract.tgz.

The BLOPEX package is being developed by Andrew Knyazev, Merico Argentati,
Ilya Lashuk, and Evgueni Ovtchinnikov since 2002. It has been tested for
mega-million eigenproblems on a variety of computers, including IBM
BlueGene/L. The package is supported.

MATLAB Tensor Toolbox Version 2.0

Tensors (also known as mutidimensional arrays or N-way arrays) are used in a
variety of applications ranging from chemometrics to psychometrics. The MATLAB
tensor toolbox provides the following classes for manipulating dense, sparse, and
structured tensors using MATLAB's object-oriented features:

* tensor - An extension of MATLAB's native multidimensional array
capabilities.
* sptensor - A sparse multidimensional array. [New in Version 2.0]
* tenmat - Store a tensor as a matrix, with extra information so that it
can be converted back into a tensor.
* sptenmat - Store a sptensor as sparse matrix in coordinate format, with
extra information so that it can be converted back into a sptensor. [New
in Version 2.0]
* ttensor - Store a tensor decomposed as a Tucker operator (a core tensor
multiplied by matrices in each mode).
* ktensor - Store a tensor decomposed as a Kruskal operator (the sum of
rank-one tensors).

Version 2.0 adds support for sparse tensors, new functionality for existing

The DARPA High Productivity Computing Systems (HPCS) Program and HPCWire are

(http://www.hpcchallenge.org). The goal of the competition is to focus the HPC
community's attention on developing a broad set of HPC hardware and HPC
software capabilities that are necessary to productively use HPC systems. The
awards session will be held during the SC06 conference on Tuesday during a
12:15pm BOF.

The core of the HPC Challenge Award Competition is the HPC Challenge benchmark
suite developed at the University of Tennessee under the DARPA HPCS program

Aims

The Conference focuses on various aspects of mathematical modelling and usage

A reformulation of a mathematical programming problem is loosely intended as a
transformation of the problem formulation to an alternative form which is
interesting and/or useful to solve the problem and/or gain insights about
it. As such, "reformulation theory" is extremely interesting and also very
important from a practical point of view.

We would like to invite high-quality submissions for this issue. We will
welcome all contributions focusing on reformulations and/or relaxations based
on the mathematical programming formulation of any optimization problem form:
LP, NLP, IP, MIP, Multi-objective, ...

Postdoc position in scientific computing at INRIA Futurs (near Paris)

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral researcher position for up
to two years at INRIA Futurs, Orsay (near Paris), in the area of high
performance scientific computing. The successful candidate will work
mainly with dr. Laura Grigori (INRIA) on one or more of the ongoing
projects on numerical linear algebra. The focus of these projects is
on parallel direct methods as used in solving large systems of
equations and least squares problems and in particular on their
applications to sparse and/or structured matrices. The postdoctoral
researcher is expected to conduct his/her research in designing
algorithms for sparse and/or structured matrices and implement them in
a form of portable, stable codes. The new algorithms will be
evaluated on real-life applications, through the existing academic and
industrial collaborations in geodesy, statistics, hydrogeology. The
work anticipated here ranges from a theoretical investigation to
algorithmic development followed by performance evaluation on diverse
computational platforms. The experience in relevant areas is
advantageous, however, the details of the candidate's involvement can
be tuned to match the best his/her interests and skills.

The position includes a salary of 2154 euros gross monthly (around
1750 euros net monthly) and travel opportunities.

Required : Applicants must hold a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Computer
Science or a closely related field. Previous research experience in
numerical linear algebra, parallel computing will be an asset.

The Scientific Computing Group in the Computational Research Division at
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an opening for a
postdoctoral fellow to work on the development of scientific computing
algorithms and their application to a variety of application areas of
interest to US Department of Energy and LBNL, such as structural biology
and nuclear physics. The research activities will include the analysis
of the performance profile and algorithmic complexity of existing
computational codes; the improvement of the efficiency and reliability
of existing codes; and the development of novel algorithms on petascale
high performance computers. The research activities will require the
development of techniques in discrete and combinatorial mathematics,
dimension reduction, and optimization.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Mathematics or Computer
Science within the last 3 years, with a strong background in discrete
mathematics and some knowledge of mathematical physics and numerical
analysis. Experience in programming, parallel computing, and MPI is
highly desirable.
