Subject: Book announcement: Writing Scientific Software

Dear colleagues,

We would like to announce our forthcoming book: Writing Scientific Software :
A Guide to Good Style to be published by Cambridge University Press.
http://www.cambridge.org/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=0521675952

The book has essential information for scientists who carry out numerical or
scientific computations. It contains many interesting exercises and can be
used for a course or as a complement to Numerical Analysis classes, or
programming classes, including Parallel Computing. Paperback or hardcover
copies will be available soon in Europe, and in US bookstores in September.
If you plan to use the book for a class this Fall, contact Cambridge
University Press now. They may be able to arrange for you to get earlier
copies.

of The University of Sydney has been awarded the 2006 Richard Dimick
Jenks Prize for Excellence in Software Engineering Applied to
Computer Algebra. Prof. Cannon is the head of the Computational
Algebra Research Group at The University. The award recognizes the
outstanding work of Prof. Cannon and his research group on the
design and implementation of the mathematical computation system
Magma and for Cannon's earlier work on the computer algebra system
Cayley.

The Jenks Prize includes a plaque and a check for US$1,000. It was
presented by Dr. Barry Trager in Genova, Italy at the International
Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation on 11 July.

The Jenks Prize is given in memory of Dr. Richard D. Jenks, a pioneer in
the field of computer algebra and a long-time scientist and software
engineer at the IBM Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY, USA.

Subject: Looking for fast linear solvers for elliptic interface problems

We are looking for advices on fast iterative solvers for the linear
algebraic system resulted from the Poisson equation with dielectric
interfaces. In our method, the Poisson equation is discrtized with
standard central finite differences, while physical jumping conditions
are imposed near the interfaces. As a result, the system matrix
is no longer symmetric, and/or diagonally dominant. We found that
many linear algebraic solvers converge slowly, or does not converge
for our problem. We have tested a number of standard linear solvers,
such as biconjugate gradient, stabilized biconjugated gradient, with
incomplete LU preconditioning, and preconditioners.

Any information about the iterative solvers for our problem will
be much appreciated. We believe that linear solvers for our problem
are also useful for the general problems involving fixed or moving
interface/boundary.

Test matrices in MSR format are available upon request. For more
information of our numerical method, including its high accuracy and
the asymmetric matrix, please refer to our paper

The SIAM Workshop on Combinatorial Scientific Computing (CSC07)
February 17-19, 2007
Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa, Costa Mesa, CA
URL: http://www.siam.org/meetings/cse07/csc07.php

The SIAM Workshop on Combinatorial Scientific Computing (CSC07) will be
organized at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa on Feb 17-19, 2007, preceding
the 2007 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering. CSC07
follows two earlier successful CSC workshops held at San Francisco in 2004 and
at Toulouse in 2005. The Workshop aims to bring together researchers
interested in combinatorial mathematics and algorithms in scientific
computing, broadly interpreted.

Contributed presentations in lecture and poster formats are invited in all
areas consistent with the workshop themes. A 2-page extended abstract, in PDF
format, of a proposed talk should be submitted by November 3, 2006 to
stoledo@tau.ac.il. Abstracts for poster presentations, at most 100 words
long, should be submitted by December 1, 2006. We expect funding to partially
support early career researchers, who should submit a two-page resume and a
letter of reference along with their abstracts.

Further details are available at the Workshop web page,
http://www.siam.org/meetings/cse07/csc07.php.
