Subject: Implementation of a math model of glucose infusion

The prevalence of diabetes indicates that it is a major,
worldwide health problem that is becoming increasingly
serious. An important step to mitigate this problem is
to promote and facilitate understanding of the cause,
direction and consequences of diabetes.

To assist in this effort, we have developed and now make
available the computer implementation of a mathematical
model for the physiological response to a glucose infusion.
This model demonstrates dynamically the production of insulin
for various model parameters, including the pancreatic
sensitivity to glucose.

The model is implemented in modest Fortran and Matlab codes,
with plotting of the dynamic response through Matlab graphics.

Subject: TetGen 1.4.0 is available for download

TetGen is a tetrahedral mesh generator. It supports automatic mesh generation
for adaptive finite element and finite volume methods. TetGen implements a set
of Delaunay-based algorithms. It is written in C++ and can be used as either
an executable program or a library for integrating into other
applications. All major operating systems, e.g. Unix/Linux, MacOS, Windows,
etc, are supported.

New release 1.4.0 of TetGen is available for download at TetGen's website:

The new version has many improvements in the algorithms that lead to a better
performance in mesh quality, mesh size, speed, and stability. A new feature to
identically preserve the input boundary in the output tetrahedral mesh is
provided. More details about the new features can be found at the TetGen's

The Thirteenth Leslie Fox Prize meeting will take place on

Friday, June 22nd 2007
at the Oxford University Computing Laboratory.

Entries for the Thirteenth Leslie Fox Prize competition should now be
submitted. Any person who is less than 31 years old on January 1st 2007
and has not already won a first prize is eligible. Each entry should
consist of a paper, describing some of the candidate's research, that
is suitable for a 40-minute lecture at a numerical analysis symposium.
Whether or not the work has been published or accepted for publication
is irrelevant, but no person may submit more than one paper. Candidates
from previous competitions are encouraged to enter.

The entries will be considered by the Adjudicating Committee:

Endre Suli (University of Oxford, Chairman),
Andrew Stuart (University of Warwick),
Nick Higham (University of Manchester).

Particular attention will be given to the originality and quality of each
paper, and to the suitability of the material for a 40-minute talk to a
general audience of numerical analysts. Papers will be selected by the
Committee by mid-April 2007, for presentation at the Leslie Fox Prize
meeting. Only the papers that are presented at the symposium will be
eligible for awards but, subject to this restriction, the Adjudicating
Committee may award any number of first and second prizes.

- Entries should be received, by the Chairman, by January 31st 2007,
either electronically as a PostScript or a pdf file or as three
hard copies by regular mail.

- Each candidate should include a statement of her/his year of birth
and should indicate that she/he would be available to present her/his
paper at the symposium.

- A joint paper may be submitted by an individual candidate provided that
it is accompanied by a statement from the co-authors agreeing to the
submission and detailing the contribution of the candidate to the paper.

- Travel funds are not generally available to assist candidates who attend
the symposium.

- The receipt of all entries will be acknowledged.

Subject: Nikolaj S. Bakhvalov: May 29, 1934 - August 29, 2005

Bakhvalov was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1991 and a head
of the department of computational mathematics at the college of mechanics and
mathematics of the Moscow State University since 1981. Bakhvalov authored over
150 papers, several books, and a popular textbook on numerical methods. He had
made major pioneering contributions to many areas of mathematics and mechanics.

networks to gather massive geologic, hydrologic, and geophysical data;

monitoring, characterizing, and forecasting the states of watersheds/basins

Abstract: Recently, recursion was introduced into the area of Dense Linear
Algebra with the intent of producing new algorithms as well as improving
its existing algorithms. Recursion, via the divide-and-conquer paradigm,
introduced variable blocking to complement the standard fixed block
algorithms. In particular, new data structures for dense linear algebra
became an active research area. This Mini-Symposium will focus on both new
data structures and/or new or existing algorithms for high performing
dense linear algebra algorithms.

minisymposium. An extended abstract consisting of a pdf-file of at most 4

be sent before February 15, 2006. Notice that the extended abstract should
be formatted as a regular paper and also include a short abstract of at
most 150 words. The short abstract must also be submitted as plain text
(allowing necessary LaTeX symbols). The acceptance of the extended
abstract will be send no later than March 15, 2006.

Extended abstracts of accepted submissions will be provided electronically
and a booklet of the short abstracts will be handed out at PARA'06.

After the workshop, full original papers of at most 10 pages will be
reviewed for publication in the workshop proceedings to be published in
the Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). The full
papers, formatted according to the rules of the LNCS, should be submitted
by September 15, 2006. Additional information will be provided in due
time.

and are a component of the Rice VIGRE program (www.
<http://www.vigre.rice.edu> vigre.rice.edu). Pfeiffer-VIGRE instructors
work with a team of faculty and graduate and undergraduate students in one
of the VIGRE research areas. Research area currently targeted for these
appointments, including Pfeiffer-VIGRE instructorships, include control,
design, and inverse problems, numerical solution of partial differential
equations, and mathematical biology. Candidates will be expected to document
interest and experience in one or more of these fields.
