Subject: Origin of Packed Format for Arrays

I am trying to find out who first proposed packed format for symmetric and
triangular arrays. It appears that many people used packed format early on
and it then got adopted in early linear algebra codes such as the Handbook
of Automatic Computation, Eispack and Linpack. I do know that Velvel Kahan
used this format for a matrix package he developed in 1958.

Subject: New Book, Numerical Polynomial Algebra

My book

"Numerical Polynomial Algebra", XV + 472 pp.

has just appeared with SIAM. For members of SIAM (and for attendants of many
forthcoming relevant conferences), it is available at a price of US$ 64.75.

Just as "numerical linear algebra" deals with the computational treatment of
problems associated with one or many linear equations, "numerical polynomial
algebra" investigates the computational treatment of problems associated with
one or several polynomial equations. Here, due to the inherent nonlinearity,
even the case of one variable is nontrivial; but the main interest is in the
multivariate case.

While "computer algebra" considers computational aspects of polynomials in the
spirit of pure mathematics (exact integer or rational data, exact computation),
numerical polynomial algebra embeds the problems into an analytic frame. Thus,
data of limited accuracy and floating-point computation assume their natural
place, just like in numerical linear algebra. In multivariate polynomial
algebra, this represents a step into virgin territory.

Remarkably, regular polynomial systems may be transformed into matrix
eigenproblems whose dimension equals the number of zeros; the associated
eigenvectors reveal the coordinates of the zeros. Other significant algebraic
problems are singular so that their numerical solution poses a particular
challenges.

My book addresses computer algebraists as well as numerical analysts;
therefore, low-level introductions to numerical computation (chapters 3 and 4)
and to multivariate polynomial algebra (chapter 2) have been included.
As a potential textbook it contains numerous examples and exercises throughout.
Since polynomial models become more and more important in many areas,
application scientists may find important hints for their work in the book.

Contents by chapters:

Part I : Polynomials and Numerical Analysis

1. Polynomials (22 pp.)
2. Representations of Polynomial Ideals (42 pp.)
3. Polynomials with Coefficients of Limited Accuracy (34 pp.)
4. Approximate Numerical Computation (32 pp.)

Part II : Univariate Polynomial Problems

5. Univariate Polynomials (38 pp.)
6. Various Tasks with Empirical Univariate Polynomials (52 pp.)

Part III : Multivariate Polynomial Problems

7. One Multivariate Polynomial (44 pp.)
8. Zero-dimensional Systems of Multivariate Polynomials (70 pp.)
9. Systems of Empirical Multivariate Polynomials (68 pp.)
10. Numerical Basis Computation (32 pp.)

Part IV : Positive-Dimensional Polynomial Systems

11. Matrix Eigenproblems for Positive-Dimensional Systems (20 pp.)

amount of US$1,000 and a citation certificate. The award winners will
be invited to give a fifteen minute presentation of the winning paper at
the Optimization Section Business Meeting held during the INFORMS Fall
National Meeting in the year the award is made. It is expected that the
winners will be responsible for the travel expenses to present the paper
at the INFORMS meeting.

ELIGIBILITY. The authors and paper must satisfy the following
three conditions to be eligible for the prize:

(a) the paper must either be published in a refereed professional
journal no more than three years before the closing date of nomination,
or be submitted to and received by a refereed professional journal no
more than three years before the closing date of nomination;

(b) all authors must have been awarded their terminal degree within
five years of the closing date of nomination;

(c) the topic of the paper must belong to the field of optimization in
its broadest sense.

NOMINATION. A letter of nomination should be sent (preferably by

Subject: Staff Position at GlaxoSmithKline

Mathematical Modeler

The Scientific Computing and Mathematical Modeling group in
GlaxoSmithKline has an open position for a mathematical modeler available
in our state-of-the-art facility, located in Upper Merion, PA. The Upper
Merion site, located in suburban Philadelphia, is one of the world's
largest pharmaceutical research and development centers. The Scientific
Computing and Mathematical Modeling group applies mathematical and
computational techniques to a variety of challenging problems in
pharmaceutical research. Some of the current problems we are working on
include osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, dyslipidemia, blood clotting,
asthma, computational systems biology, metabolism of bacteria and drug
delivery from medical devices.

This position will be responsible for developing mathematical models on
how powders behave based on basic physics as well as models of drug
delivery systems, medical devices and formulations. Modeling powders is an
interesting but challenging area. While physical and chemical
understanding can, in principle, describe the behavior of the individual
crystals and particles, modeling the collective behavior is quite
challenging. This type of modeling is interdisciplinary work at the
boundary of physics, chemistry, pharmaceutics, numerical analysis and
computer science.

We are looking for that rare individual who can successfully integrate
chemistry and physics with sophisticated mathematics and computational
techniques. A successful candidate would have a PhD in chemical or
mechanical engineering, physics, applied mathematics, scientific computing
or related field. Experience in mathematical model building, differential
equations, numerical analysis, and scientific computing applied to solving
practical problems is required. Experience in modeling powders, granular
flow and discrete element method is highly desirable. Excellent
communication skills and the ability to communicate results with those who
are neither comfortable nor familiar with mathematical terminology are
also required.

GlaxoSmithKline is dedicated to an innovative workplace and supports you
with career long opportunities and learning. We offer a competitive
benefits and compensation package designed to attract and retain the very
best. Developing talent through equality of opportunity. For confidential
consideration and efficient processing, please visit our website:

Subject: Summer school in Bari on Numerical Linear Algebra

The XXII School of Computational Mathematics (special topic: Numerical
Linear Algebra) will take place in the hotel Porto Giardino, Monopoli,
Bari, Italy, September, 12-19, 2004.

The main courses are:

Least Squares (Ordinary Least Squares and Total Least Squares) and
hMatrix Approximations (4 hours),
G. H. Golub, Stanford University, USA,

Structured Low Rank Approximations (5 hours),
M. T. Chu, North Carolina State University, USA,

Toeplitz least squares and related problems (5 hours),
G. Heinig, Kuwait University , Kuwait,

Semiseparable matrices and their use in numerical linear algebra (5 hours),
M. Van Barel, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leuven, Belgium,

Model reduction of large scale dynamical systems (6 hours),
P. Van Dooren, Universite' Catholique de Louvain, Louvain la Neuve,Belgium.

Besides the short courses there will be given some seminars by
Dario A. Bini, Luca Gemignani, Daniele Bertaccini, ...

The school is addressed to graduate students, PhD students, young
researchers in scientific disciplines (Mathematics, Statistics, Physics,
Engineering, Computer Science, Economics,...).

There is no registration fee for the school. Participants have to pay
for full board hotel accommodation. The cost for the whole period (from
Sunday evening to Saturday afternoon) in a double room is 300 Euro and
in a single room 350 Euro, in the Hotel Portogiardino.

Because the number of participants is limited, it is advisable to
register before May 15, 2004.

More information can be found at
