Subject: New Book on Time-Dependent PDEs
With great plaesure we announce the publication of the book
W. Hundsdorfer and J.G. Verwer, Numerical Solution of Time-Dependent
Advection-Diffusion-Reaction Equations, Springer Series in
Computational Mathematics, Vol. 33, Springer Verlag, 2003.
This book describes numerical methods for partial
differential equations (PDEs) coupling advection, diffusion
and reaction terms. Hence it deals with methods for hyperbolic, parabolic
and stiff and nonstiff ordinary differential equations.
It emphasizes time-dependent transport-chemistry
problems, describing e.g. the evolution of concentrations in
environmental and biological applications. Much attention
is paid on how to prevent spurious, negative concentrations and
oscillations, being the main plague of methods for hyperbolic equations.
A unified approach is followed
by emphasizing the method of lines or semi-discretization.
In this regard this book differs substantially from more specialized
textbooks which deal exclusively with either
PDEs or ODEs. It treats integration methods suitable for both classes
of problems and thus is of interest to PDE researchers less familiar with
numerical ODE methods, as well as to ODE researchers unaware of the vast
amount of numerical PDE techniques.
The first chapter provides a self-contained introduction to the
field and can be used for an undergraduate course on the numerical
solution of PDEs. The remaining four chapters are more
specialized and of interest to researchers, practitioners and
graduate students from numerical mathematics, scientific computing
computational physics and other computational sciences.
For a longer preface, table of contents, and link to
Springer's page, see our homepages http://homepages.cwi.nl/~willem/ or
http://homepages.cwi.nl/~janv/
Sincerely,
Willem Hundsdorfer and Jan Verwer

**** PROGRAM NOW ONLINE ****
August 18-20, 2003
Brown University, RI, USA
As methods for spatially representing solutions to partial
differential equations mature, the current methods for temporal
integration emerge as a bottleneck in many areas of large scale
computational science. This is of particular concern as the
emphasis in many applications and recent technologies requring
fully dynamic modeling over extended time periods.
It is the purpose of the workshop to focus on the above mentioned
issues in more detail and, by bringing together experts in various
fields, initiate a discussion on how to effectively address these
significant challengdes.
The format of the workshop will be as a number of invited lectures.
These lecture are intended to delineate the problems encountered
as well as presenting a variety of existing and emerging time-
integration techniques. It will be a priority to attempt to
understand the advantages and limitation of the different
techniques to suggest directions in which research should be
directed.
The invited speakers are chosen to cover a wide range of
expertize, ranging from numerical methods for ordinary and
partial differential equations to very large scale applications.
The list of invited speakers include
