Subject: Conjugate Gradients in Function Spaces

Is anything known about the convergence of the conjugate
gradient method for linear equations in function spaces?

E.g., is it convergent for a linear system Ax=b if A is
self-adjoint, positive definite, and 1-A is compact?
What about the rate of convergence?

Subject: Matrix Systems of Differential Equations

Dear NA Digest readers:

In the discretization of the problem I'm studying I get a matricial system of
differential equations in the form:

dX/dt = A X B

where A and B are square matrices. I'm sure these problems appear in lots of
fields of interest, but I've been unable to find any information about their
solution. Could anybody tell me which would be the (matricial) solution of
these problems, or how can it be approximated? Comments with references to
fields where these equations are common will also be specially helpful.

Best regards.

Subject: New Book, Finite Element Analysis of Shells - Fundamentals

"The Finite Element Analysis of Shells - Fundamentals"
A new book by D. Chapelle (INRIA-Rocquencourt, France) and K.J. Bathe
(MIT, USA)
Springer, 2003, 330p, ISBN: 3-540-41339-1
http://www.springer.de

This book presents a modern continuum mechanics and mathematical
framework to study shell physical behaviors, and to formulate and
evaluate finite element procedures. With a view towards the synergy that
results from physical and mathematical understanding, the book focuses
on the fundamentals of shell theories, their mathematical bases and
finite element discretizations. The complexity of the physical behaviors
of shells is analysed, and the difficulties to obtain uniformly optimal
finite element procedures are identified and studied. Some modern finite
element methods are presented for linear and nonlinear analyses.
