Subject: Matrices with Orthonormal Columns

There is as yet no generally accepted term for a (rectangular) matrix
with orthonormal columns. Some authors use "orthonormal matrix" but
that should have been the term for an orthogonal matrix.

I propose that we call it a "left-orthogonal" matrix, and a matrix with
orthonormal rows a "right-orthogonal" matrix.

Reasoning:

Q is orthogonal if and only if Q' is the inverse of Q: Q'Q = QQ' = I.
Q is left-orthogonal if and only if Q' is a left-inverse of Q: Q'Q = I.
Q is right-orthogonal if and only if Q' is a right-inverse of Q: QQ' = I.

Mondriaan 1.0: Sparse matrix partitioning package

We would like to announce the availability of version 1.0 of the
Mondriaan package. Mondriaan is a two-dimensional, multilevel,
hypergraph-based package for the partitioning of a rectangular
sparse matrix, as a sequential preprocessing step for parallel
sparse matrix-vector multiplication.

The Institute of High Performance Computing will be jointly organising
the International Conference on Scientific and Engineering Computation
(IC-SEC 2002) with the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science and
Institute for Mathematical Sciences of the National University of
Singapore from 3 to 5 December 2002. The conference is also organised in

Subject: Masters Course in Complex Fluids at Aberystwyth

M.Sc. in Mathematics

Complex Fluids: Modelling, Simulation and Industrial Applications

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Wales Aberystwyth
has received funding from the EPSRC for a new Masters level course
in Complex Fluids. The Applied Mathematics Group has an international
reputation in the study of complex fluids and enjoys strong links with
industrial companies. There are several studentships available.

An understanding of the properties and behaviour of complex fluids
is a necessary prerequisite for many industrial processes such as
injection moulding, blow moulding, extrusion, coating and fibre spinning
in the polymer industry, and many similar processes in the food industry
that are used in producing a wide range of processed foods. There are
also applications of complex fluids in the oil industry where an
understanding of the rheological behaviour of fluids is important in
drilling, enhanced oil recovery and in lubrication processes.
Add to these the detergent industry, the pharmaceutical industry
and a growing interest in medicine (for example, the properties
of blood flow in the human body), and one can see that rheology
impinges very significantly on numerous aspects of modern life.
The study of complex fluids is an interdisciplinary research field
which calls upon engineering, physical chemistry, physics and mathematics.
The study of complex fluids is important in many applications in science
and engineering especially with the plethora of new materials and products
being designed, produced and processed today.
