Jacques-Louis Lions died in the night of May 16th to 17th in Paris
after a long illness.
Born in 1928 he graduated from Ecole normale auperieure, France in 1950
and received his Doctorat d'Etat in 1954 , Laurent Schwartz being his
advisor. He was successively Professor at the Universite de Nancy,
Universite de Paris and Ecole Polytechnique, and then held a chair at
the College de France (Emeritus from 98). Member of 1'Academic des
Sciences as well as its president for two years. While teaching and
carrying on his research he was Inria's president (80-84) then
president of the French space agency (CNES.84-92) .These
last years he was active in Industry, being a board member or scientific
His exceptionaly prolific work covers both analysis and applications in
PDEs.In the early sixties he developped a school of numerical analysis
in PDE , using a systematic and rigorous variationnal approach. He also
was at the origin of the control theory in PDE.He directed dozens of
"Doctorat".and he can be credited for the use of Sobolev spaces in
Engineering. His students would also apply this to the analysis of the
Finite Element Method. His numerous students are now teaching eveywhere
in the world staying close to him and giving rise to a new French
mathematical school headed by him, exerting a lasting and widespread
influence on the international community.
Member of 20 academies in countries such as the former USSR, US, UK, EC,
as well as the Third World and Doctor Honoris Causa of 19 universities
including mine ( The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 97) has also won
many major prizes and awards among them the Von Neumann prize (86), the
Japan Prize for Science(91), the Technion's Harvey prize (91), the
Reid's SIAM prize (98).
He served as the secretary-general of the IMU, and then as its president.
His students mourn the passing of great man , a scientific father and
friend to them. For a short CV see :

Subject: GeoFEM v.4.0 Now Available
RIST (Research Organization for Information Science & Technology,
Japan) has released the BGeoFEM ver.4.0, a parallel finite element platform.
GeoFEM is delveloped as the part of the Japanese national project,
Parallel Platform for Large Scale Solid Earth Simulation" project funded by
"Special Promoting Funds of Science & Technology" of the Ministry of
Education, Science and Technology, Japan which has been conduced since 1998.
GeoFEM includes parallel finite element codes for linear/nonlinear solid
mechanics and thermal fluid simulations, parallel iterative linear solver
library, partitioning subsystem, parallel visualization subsystem and
utilities for parallel I/O and coupling of multiple codes. GeoFEM is
originally developed for solid earth simulation but applicable for various
types of engineering and science applications. Users also plug-in their own
FEM codes to GeoFEM platform and can develop parallel FEM code easily.
GeoFEM is written in Fortran 90 and MPI (part of visualization/utility
subsystems in C and C++) and can work on various types of platforms from
LINUX clusters to massively parallel computers.
Researchers and engineers interested in GeoFEM can get information at
the following website :
http://geofem.tokyo.rist.or.jp
Source files of the entire codes, example input/output files and
documents can be downloaded from this website.
New features in ver.4.0 are as follows :
1. 3D steady/transient thermal conduction subsystem available
2. Robust block ILU(1)/ILU(2) preconditioners available in linear solver subsystem
3. Compressed input/output file can be handled in parallel I/O utility
More detailed update information can be found at

importance to other sciences as well as to engineering or technology.
This beneficial practice of cross fertilization will be continuously
and systematically endorsed by the JCMSE.

Submission deadline: September 1, 2001.
Expected date for notification of acceptance: October 31, 2001.
Areas of the JCMSE include:
1. Numerical Analysis
2. Scientific Computation

This book presents the proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop
"Scientific Computing in Electrical Engineering", held in Warnem=FCnde,
Germany, August 20-23, 2000. This workshop followed two earlier workshops
held in 1997 at the Darmstadt University of Technology and in 1998 at
Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics under the
auspices of the German Mathematical Society. The main topics of SCEE-2000
were computational electrodynamics, circuit simulation and coupled problems.
The objective of the workshop, which was mainly directed at mathematicians
and electrical engineers, was to bring together scientists from universities
and industry with the goal of intensive discussions about modelling and
numerical simulation of electronic circuits and electromagnetic fields. The
book contains contributions of six invited speakers, 30 contributed speakers
and 17 poster presentations.
