Subject: Seeking Examples of Nonlinear Equations

Dear Colleagues,

I would appreciate receiving examples of (or references for)
"real-world" systems of M nonlinear equations in N variables,
with M,N between 10 and 100, but not necessarily equal.
These examples are needed for testing Newton-like methods.

Thanks in advance.

I am looking for an algorithm to solve the rank deficient least squares
problem recursively (preferably employing singular value decomposition).
Each update should be a minimum norm solution.

Subject: QMG 2.0 Mesh Generator Released

I would like to announce the release of QMG2.0. QMG is free software
available on the Web for fully automatic unstructured finite element
mesh generation in two and three dimensions. It can generate meshes
for complex domains with curved boundaries and nonmanifold features.
QMG 2.0 can be run either from the shell, under Tcl/Tk (a freeware
scripting language) or Matlab. The Matlab version includes a simple
finite element solver. QMG is written in primarily in C++.

The main new feature of QMG2.0 (compared to QMG1.1) is its ability to
handle true curved geometry. QMG2.0 permits boundaries defined by
Bezier curves, triangular Bezier patches and quadrilateral
tensor-product Bezier patches. Representations of certain simple
curved geometries (cylinders, spheres, tori) using Bezier patches
are shipped with QMG.

Subject: MATLAB Tutorial on the Web

Dear Na-netters,

I wrote a Matlab tutorial, "A practical introduction to Matlab",
that some of you may find useful in teaching numerical analysis and
numerical methods courses. The tutorial is aimed at students who
have not used Matlab before. It explains the basics features of Matlab
in some detail, with examples, and points the students to the more
advanced features. The tutorial is available on the Web as
both PostScript (http://www.math.mtu.edu/~msgocken/intro/intro.ps)
and HTML (http://www.math.mtu.edu/~msgocken/intro/intro.html) documents.
Please feel free to direct your students to these documents or to create links
to them from your own web pages.

Subject: Report on ANODE99

ANODE99

The 1999 Auckland Numerical Ordinary Differential Equations Workshop
(ANODE99) took place at The University of Auckland, New Zealand,
August 16-20, 1999. The workshop, organized by John Butcher, Robert
Chan, Nicolette Goodwin and Allison Heard of the Department of
Mathematics, University of Auckland, was one of a series of
international workshops in numerical analysis held in Auckland over
the last several years. The workshop was attended by 63 academic
participants from over 16 countries. In addition to the many
interesting museums and experiences offered in the city of Auckland,
there were opportunities to visit the rain forest and see a beautiful
waterfall, and to stroll along a magnificent unspoiled black sand
beach.

The meeting included three morning sessions consisting of lectures on
specific themes, allowing a more in-depth presentation than is usually
possible. The themes were: Dynamics of General Linear Methods (Ernst
Hairer and Pierre Leone), The Joint Spectral Radius of Families of
Matrices, with Applications to Stability Theory (Marino Zennaro and
Nicola Guglielmi) and Sensitivity Analysis and Optimal Control for
Large-Scale Dynamical Systems (Linda Petzold and Radu Serban). The
remaining talks were organized into minisymposium and covered a wide
range of topics in numerical ordinary differential equations including
stochastic differential equations, delay equations, software, waveform
relaxation techniques, and differential-algebraic equations. There
was much opportunity for discussion, including an interesting panel
session on the last day.

The next ANODE workshop will be held in January 2001 where there will
be a special emphasis on software for ordinary differential equations
and related problems.
