Subject: Leslie Fox Prize Competition

Ninth Leslie Fox Prize Competition
Dundee, June 28 1999

The Ninth Leslie Fox Prize Competition was held in Dundee on Monday 28th June
1999. We are grateful to the assistance of the University of Dundee and
in particular to David Griffiths for organizing rooms, meals, refreshments,
and registrations.

It was announced that the Tenth Leslie Fox Prize Meeting will be held in
Oxford on the Friday before the Dundee conference in 2001. The chairman
of the Adjudicating Committee will be Nick Trefethen.

The finalists presented their talks in the following (randomly chosen)
order:

Vincent Heuveline Arnoldi-Faber method for large non-Hermitian eigenvalue
problem.

Aurelian Bejancu Convergence properties of surface spline interpolation.

Paul Houston Adaptive Lagrange-Galerkin methods for unsteady
convection-diffusion problems.

Reha Tutuncu Quadratic convergence of potential-reduction methods for
degenerate problems.

Ross A Lippert The geometry of double eigenvalues.

Niles A Pierce Adjoint recovery of superconvergent functionals from PDE
approximations.

It was really a terrific programme and the candidates all showed that they
had speaking skills to match the excellence of their papers. The adjudicating
committee of Iain Duff (chairman), Nick Trefethen, and Arieh Iserles were
thus set the unenviable task of choosing the Prize Winners.

The results of their adjudication was that Leslie Fox Prizes would be
awarded to all finalists with the First Prize being shared between
Niles Pierce and Reha Tutuncu.

Congratulations to all.

Subject: Hypergeometric Function of Complex Arguments

Hi everyone,

The absorption of hydrogen can be solved analytically with hypergeometric
functions. These are solutions to the Kummer differential equation

zf"(z) + (a-z)f'(z) - bf(z) = 0

The general solution is F=c1*M+c2*U (notation of Abramowitz+Stegrun).

The hypergeometric function M or Hypergeometric1F1 (notation used by
Mathematica) is well know and found at netlib.

I am looking for an algorithm or rountine to calculate the hypergeometric
function U for complex numbers a,b,z. Any hints are appreciated!

Thanks,

Andreas Ahland

Subject: Session at Nanjing Conference in Memory of Xuchu He

SPECIAL SESSION: Memory of Late Professor Xuchu He
CALL FOR PAPER

Dear friends and colleagues,

The 1999 Nanjing International Conference on Optimization and Numerical
Algebra will be held at Nanjing Normal University, September 27--30, 1999.
Several organizers and the program committee members of the conference were
former students of the late Professor Xuchu He. Pofessor He was a pioneer
and a leader in computational mathematics and numerical optimization in
China for more than three decades. In 1958 he established the field of
computational mathematics at Nanjing University and trained a lot of Chinese
computational mathematicians. He founded
``NUMERICAL MATHEMATICS, A JOURNAL OF CHINESE UNIVERSITIES'' in 1979 and
made an important contribution to the development of computational
mathematics in China. His research work and textbooks in optimization and
numerical analysis has influenced several generations of Chinese
computational mathematicians.

At the Nanjing conference we plan to organize a big session in memory of
Professor Xuchu He. We invite former colleagues, friends and students of
Professor He to participate in this session. The talks at this special
session will be allocated 25 minutes, 15 minutes, or poster sessions.
Please send an abstract of one page for talk and a detailed abstract of
two to three pages for poster before July 30 to:
Professor Jiu Ding, Department of Mathematics, The University of
Southern Mississippi, USA,
Email: jding@yizhi.st.usm.edu or
Professor Wenyu Sun, School of Mathematics and Computer Science,
Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing 210097, China.

PARA2000, Bergen June 18-21, 2000, Call for Papers

http://www.ii.uib.no/para2000

The Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen and Parallab are
hosting the fifth International Workshop on Applied Parallel Computing
(PARA2000) June 18-21, 2000 at the University of Bergen, Norway. The general
theme for PARA2000 is "New paradigms for HPC in industry and academia"
focusing on:

-High-performance computing applications in academia and industry,
-The use of Java in high-performance computing,
-Grid and Meta computing,
-Directions in high-performance computing and networking.
-Education in Computational Science.

The PARA2000 meeting is aimed to be an international forum for idea and
competence exchange for specialists in parallel computing, visualization,
etc and scientists from industry and academia solving large scale
computational problems. Another important aim of the PARA meetings is to
strengthen the ties between HPC centers, academia, and industry in the Nordic
countries as well as worldwide.

The meeting starts with a one day tutorial followed by a three day workshop.
There will be several invited one-hour lectures as well as around 70
contributed 20-30 minutes talks. The PARA2000 Proceedings will be published
by Springer-Verlag in their Lecture Notes in Computer Science series.
Prospective participants are invited to submit an extended abstract to
para2000@ii.uib.no.

Research Studentship
BICOM, Institute of Computational Mathematics, Brunel University

Applications are invited for a three-year CASE research studentship
at BICOM as part of the EPSRC funded project

Computational Modelling of Thermoforming and In-Mould Decoration Processes

In these processes thin polymeric sheets, on which patterns are printed,
are deformed into specific shapes. The research will involve the modelling
and numerical simulation of the deformation of the sheets. Of particular
interest in the modelling is the prediction of the thickness distribution
of the deformed structures and the prediction of the distortion of the
patterns printed on the sheets.

The project will be undertaken in close collaboration with two British
manufacturing companies.

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a good first degree or
Masters degree in a subject with a high mathematical content.
The successful applicant will work in areas of computational solid
mechanics associated with the above process. Previous knowledge of the
areas is not essential as a programme of reading and instruction will
be available.
