Subject: Bound Infinity Norm of a Block Tridiagonal Matrix

Let T be the m by m tridiagonal matrix with 2's on the diagonal and with
-1's on the super and subdiagonal. Let E be a block tridiagonal (m^2) by (m^2)
matrix with diagonal blocks I + 2*inv(T) and with super and subdiagonal
blocks -inv(T), where I is the m by m identity matrix and "inv" denotes
inverse. From the numerical results, we know that the infinity norm
(largest absolute row sum) of inv(E) is 1.67 if m=10, 2.08 if m=20,
2.50 if m=40. Hence, the infinity norm appears to be either bounded, as a
function of m, or slowly growing. Does anyone know how to establish this?

Aachen (RWTH Aachen) there is an opening for a new position as

Professor for Computer Science
(Visualisation of Numerical Simulations)

The position is with tenure and at the German C-3 salary level.

Representation of the field is required through research and teaching
activities. Among the duties are teaching of courses in the computer
science curriculum. The scientific emphasis should be in practical
computer science, preferably in visualization of numerical simulations.
Possible areas of specialization are methods and tools for the
representation, manipulation, and interaction with results of
numerical simulations. Active Participation in interdisciplinary
research endeavors and the formation of a competence center for
high-performance computing are desireable.

The position requires a habilitation or equivalent scientific
achievements as well as aptitude in teaching. Handicapped applicants
are encouraged to apply.

The University of Technology Aachen is striving to increase the
numbers of women in research and teaching. Applicants are asked to
apply and submit the usual material (curriculum vitae, description of
scientific or professional background, list of publications and
courses taught) until
May 21, 1999
to the Dekan der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakult=E4t
der RWTH Aachen, Templergraben 64, 52056 Aachen, Germany.

Subject: Postdoctoral Position at Duke and Caltech

A strong highly-motivated researcher is sought for a
joint Caltech-Duke postdoctoral position in
computational fluid dynamics and nonequilibrium physics
beginning August 1, 1999. The research will be done in
collaboration with Professor Michael Cross (Department
of Physics, Caltech) and Professor Henry Greenside
(Department of Physics, Duke University) and will
involve the development and application of new
three-dimensional computer codes that will allow
quantitative comparisons of theory with experiment for
convecting fluids in large-aspect-ratio cells. A
particular emphasis will be on studying and
understanding the transitions to weak turbulence and
properties of weak turbulence as functions of Rayleigh,
Taylor, and Prandtl numbers. Applicants should be no
more than three years beyond the date of their PhD and
they should have substantial prior experience with
computational fluid dynamics (especially algorithms for
integrating the time-dependent incompressible
Navier-Stokes equations) and with writing large
scientific codes, as well as a strong interest in the
physics of weakly turbulent systems.

Interested candidates should send a resume with three
references to:

Professor Henry Greenside

Applications are sought for a United Kingdom Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council funded position which is available for up
to 3 years to work on

Parallel Methods for PDE Eigenvalue Problems

The project is funded under the EPSRC's Computational PDEs Initiative
and will develop innovative parallel algorithms for large sparse
unsymmetric eigenvalue problems arising from stability computations in
computational PDEs, with particular applications to fluid flow problems.
The eigenvalue solvers will be built around various shift-invert
iterative strategies, with the associated (indefinite and
unsymmetric) systems being solved using parallel software recently
developed at Bath (http://www.maths.bath.ac.uk/~parsoft/doug).

The project is also supported by AEA Technology, Harwell, UK who have
strong industrial interest in the outcome.

The main objectives are (i) To develop and implement
parallel eigenvalue software which is efficient for 3D applications;
(ii) To test the solver on a variety of industrially relevant
applications, especially those arising from mixed finite element
discretisations of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations;
(iii) To produce a public domain version of the eigenvalue solver and
to implement it in the ENTWIFE code, developed by AEA Technology. An
associated Ph.D. project will concentrate on the theory and analysis
of the eigenvalue solver.

Applicants should have an interest and experience in
large scale scientific computing applied to the numerical solution
of PDEs. Knowledge of one or more of the languages C, C++ and Fortran
is essential. Experience in parallel programming using message passing
techniques and in modern domain decomposition and
multilevel iterative techniques would be a distinct advantage.

Recent theoretical and practical work arising from the DOUG project can be
viewed at http://www.maths.bath.ac.uk/~igg/unstructured.html .
More details of activity on eigenvalue solvers at Bath
can be found at http://www.maths.bath.ac.uk/~as .

The position is available on or as soon as possible after September 1st
1999 for up to three years.

The appointment will be at the Grade 1A level and the salary will be
up to 20,107 pounds sterling, depending on qualifications,
age and experience.

Further details of the project may be obtained
from either of the Investigators, Professor Alastair Spence
(http://www.maths.bath.ac.uk/~as}, email: as@maths.bath.ac.uk) or
Dr Ivan Graham (http://www.maths.bath.ac.uk/~igg, email: igg@maths.bath.ac.uk)
at the Department of Mathematical Sciences,
University of Bath. Telephone +44 (1225) 826989, fax +44 (1225) 826492.

The official closing date for applications is May 14th 1999.

Anyone interested in applying should immediately contact either Ivan Graham or
Alastair Spence directly by email at the addresses above.

In addition applicants should also contact Hazel Thorburn
(H.I.M.Thorburn@bath.ac.uk) at the Personnel Office of the University of
Bath, Bath BA2 7AY, quoting Ref No 99/131 stating their interest in
this position.
