Subject: Forum for High Performance Computing

National Partnership in Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI)

Thousands of HPC users around the country and the world are attempting to
use the latest hardware and software to solve the biggest problems in
science. Such leading-edge users sometimes face problems that their prior
experience never anticipated, their colleagues never addressed, and
possibly even the experts at the national centers are unfamiliar with.

To address these problems, NPACI has established HPC Forum to enable the
HPC user community to ask questions and discuss issues regarding any and all
HPC topics. The purpose of HPC Forum is to enable and accelerate the
efforts of HPC users by providing a venue for users to ask questions and
discuss problems. Experts from the NPACI staff will read HPC Forum (and ask
questions themselves as well as answer them!), but we hope everyone using
HPC techniques, including researchers, staff from other centers,
applications developers, and hardware vendors, will look to HPC Forum as a
valuable resource for finding answers and developing solutions. We will
actively recruit the participation of the entire HPC community in this
endeavor.

HPC Forum is open to everyone and is provided by NPACI as a public service.
We hope that it provides you with a valuable source of information and that
you will in turn contribute your own expertise and experiences to help the
community.

A new web site has been established to be a center of activity for
incorporating wavelets into the undergraduate curriculum. Currently
on the site are:

1. A report on a project for undergraduates on image processing using
the Haar wavelets.

2. A prospectus for the book Discovering Wavelets, by Edward
Aboufadel and Steven Schlicker of Grand Valley State University (which
is in Michigan).

3. An excerpt from the book featuring a lesson on Daubechies wavelets
and an associated Maple file.

4. Links to other web sites on wavelets that are accessible to
undergraduates.

Also coming soon is image processsing software that uses wavelets that
was designed by a sophomore in a first-semester linear algebra course.

SCOPE

The workshop is devoted to recent advances in Independent Component Analysis
and Blind Separation of Signals. It is intended to bring together
researchers from the fields of artificial neural networks, signal
processing, statistics, data analysis and all other domains connected to
information processing.

We are soliciting contributions covering all aspects of ICA and BSS: theory,
methods, implementation and recent experimental results. The workshop will
feature poster and oral presentations (no parallel sessions) and many
opportunities for exchanges and informal discussions.

Argonne National Laboratory invites outstanding candidates to apply for a
postdoctoral research position with the Computational Differentiation
Project in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division. Candidates should
have a Ph.D. in computer science, computational science, or a related
discipline. Experience with the use of advanced computing systems is
required; experience with the development of application-relevant tools is
desirable.

The successful candidate will participate in a project involving the
sensitivity analysis of complex computational simulations by using
automatic differentiation technology. The project requires the ability to
work in an interdisciplinary research environment. Information on automatic

Subject: Graduate Fellowships at Old Dominion University

Graduate Students Recruited for GAANN Fellowships at ODU

Since 1995, Old Dominion University and the U.S. Department of Education
have been sponsoring a High Performance Computing and Communication track
within the Department of Computer Science at ODU. The Department of
Education support comes in the form of Graduate Assistantships in Areas of
National Need (GAANN) and has just been renewed through 2001. At ODU,
the GAANN fellowship program is modeled after the multi-institution
Virginia/ICASE/LaRC Program in HPCC. Successful applicants will fulfill
doctoral degree course requirements while being co-mentored, according to
their interest, in their thesis research by a scientist at the nearby NASA
Langley Research Center (LaRC) and/or its Institute for Computer
Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE).

U.S. citizens with strong academic records in CS, science, or
engineering, particularly from groups underrepresented among computer
science doctoral graduates, are encouraged to apply. Under the terms of
the federal sponsorship, such students will be given preference among
equally academically qualified applicants. Highly qualified applicants
will also be considered from outside these groups. GAANN Fellows will
receive a stipend of $15,000 per year for 1998-99 (adjusted to keep pace
with the stipend of NSF Graduate Fellowships), as well as a full tuition
waiver and educational and professional travel allowances. The cost of
living is relatively inexpensive in the Greater Norfolk area, stretching

Research Fellow for Computational PDE Unit

The above EPSRC-funded post is available from 1 October 1998 for a fixed
period of two years to work on anisotropic mesh adaptation and error
estimation for the finite element solution of partial differential
equations.

Applicants should have, or be about to receive, a PhD (or have equivalent
experience) in numerical or computational mathematics or a related
discipline, and experience of, or a strong interest in, the numerical
solution of partial differential equations.

Salary will be on the scale for Research Staff Grade 1A within the
range 16,045 - 19,371 UK pounds p.a. according to qualifications and
relevant experience.
